Exhaust Not Right?

I am new to this, my SP3 on has 3k miles on it so needless to say it is stock other than some bulb swaps.

My exhaust is getting ALL OVER the back of my car as if it is running really rich. My Ecplise Turbo used to have this problem, but only after moods and fuel pump/injector upgrades.

Has anyone else experienced any problems like this? I took it to the dealership and they said everything appeared okay... My response was "Except the black shit all over the back of my stock car"

Someone told me I could have a bad cat?

If someone could provide some feedback/help it would be greatly appreciated. Other than this, I love the car so far.

This car runs really rich stock, when it's hot out my tips turn black in a week of driving. Get a rag and learn to love it or tune it.

soot is a byproduct of direct injection. especially on the stock rich tune. when the fuel spray goes from a fine atomized mist, to heavy droplets; it poofs into soot and puffs out the back

@stolzy , you have come to the right place if you are looking for technical information.

The soot that is on the back of your car is indeed a hallmark of the Disi motor, but can be reduced in the future if you decide to "tune" the car, effectively leaning it out some.

It is my experience, much like your dsm days, that turbocharged cars, in general, have dirty backsides lol.

Soon after my post, people will ask you to kindly donate a few bucks, as this forum is run by its members. It is run this way so that you can access unbiased, uncensored reviews of aftermarket parts, oem parts and all of the technical information you will ever need.

Welcome to msf.

So there truly is nothing to do to fix it, without someone doing some tuning for me?

Well I guess I better get some polish and rags...

Any problems with it messing up the paint. I had issues on my Eclipse with that.

Welcome to MSF, I'm a former DSM owner myself. I haven't heard of any paint issues, then again these cars aren't old enough to really see any problems like that. My 98 GSX had paint issues (famous disappearing clear coat) but never anything due to the exhaust; and I had 525whp tuned at +- 11.4 aft at WOT, rarely ran as rich as these cars though.

I have an 07 MS6 and had the same problems...I purchased a hypertech programmer and it did lean it out a bit and haven't had near the amount of black soot in the tailpipe. It still collects a little though. It also gave it a sizable kick in the pants. I don't believe I got the whole +68HP +38TQ that Hypertech states using the 93 octane, but it moves out pretty good. A lot better than stock.

Cobb Accessport will solve this problem pretty nicely.

MS3=soot. Welcome!

Glad I bought black. :D

JS + MS3 05-03-2011 06:22 PM

or Black Mica will hide the soot pretty good

I've personally logged this car running as low as a 9 AFR on the stock tune. So you will get soot unless you retune.

I gotta say, between the brake dust and the exhaust soot, these cars do make a hell of a mess! LOL
