Default Exhaust Question

So I had an ATP 3" Catless full DP and a cobb ss cbe on my speed3 before I totaled it a few weeks ago. Good news is I got another speed, only difference with the new one is the color. New one is a '12 velocity red non-tech.

2 Questions..

1. Like I said I had a cobb ss cbe.. After I put it on, I didnt get the sound that I had exactly expected after watching cobb's video on their ss cbe for the gen2 speed3's. My question is will certain downpipes change the sound of the exhaust just like different brand catbacks would? (Cobb used their cobb brand downpipe in the video I mentioned above, which is why im asking considering I had the atp).

2. With the cobb cbe, I was happy with the sound even though it wasnt what I had expected. So happy, I might even go with the same setup I had. With that said, I wasnt happy with the sound level the exhaust produced. I had expected it to be louder.. Is there anyway to get aftermarket cbe's louder without sacrificing the exhaust tone too much, or barely at all? I would like to order the cobb again, even with its high price if I can make it noticeably louder without affecting how it sounds too much..

EDIT : I did have the resonator removed from my stock CBE, then put the atp full catless pipe in and it wasnt near loud enough for me and I wanted a much different sound.

I know the UR CBE I think it is has an option where you can purchase the CBE without resonators.. Does anyone know if the cobb comes with resonators? Id assume it does.. Anyone have an idea of how it would sound if said resonators were removed?

Thanks for the input guys.

A 3' downpipe will only make the cbe a bit louder and not change how the cbe is suppose to sound.
You can always have your resonators deleted.

I had my resonator removed and then put the full atp catless dp/tp on and it wasnt loud enough/didnt really sound how I wanted it too.. Thats why I purchased the catback. Do you think I could remove the resonators from the cobb cbe? If I did I feel like it would sound like crap; I feel like it would get real raspy and droney.. What do you think?

I'd probably do it if I thought it didn't sound loud. Kinda seems like you just don't like the sound tho. You can go to an exhaust shop to install resonators back anytime.

Are you saying you would remove the resonators from the cobb cbe?

Just do 3" straight pipe. no resonators, no mufflers. balls to the wall. thats what i have, and my friend with a gen2 ms3 has and it sounds like a monster. i'd link the youtube video of our cars but boobtube is blocked at work. search on youtube "Speed6 vs. Speed3 Exhaust Competition." it will be a blue genpu and my purple ms6. Only difference is we have stock DP, but 3" test pipe.

EDIT:

I have ebay test pipe and UR CBE.....I love it. However, I had to give a few people a ride to the train station last night, I was talking to one of the people in the back seat, and they couldn't hear a word I was saying.

you got to remember also the sound quality outside the car from a video vs being inside the car. your best bet to make sure if you like it or not is have a friend you trust driving the speed, take it for a drive, and listen to it as he takes off down the road, and does a fly by. if you still dont like it. cut resenator off, keep it, have him test drive it again, and if you think it sounds raspy then put resenator back on.

It sounds like you have the money to throw away on random exhaust till you find the right one. so use 40 bucks of it to test the resenator theory. Me personally had a COBB DP and a UR CBE and had a buddy test drive it, and it sounded smexy when he took off. so try that.

That does sound really nice. Does your friend still have the dual tips though? I dont want to not have any piping in the bumper that has two exhaust holes cut out in it..

If you want a loud and deep CBE, go with the UR CBE. Shit sounds mean.

Here is mine with a catless test pipe and the UR cbe. I know it's a hsort clip, I never got around to doing more videos.
It honestly sounds even better in person (from outside the car)
I also did a video of a slow pass, it's on the same channel

yes he has two exhaust tips. they are 3" or 4" inch tips. they fill out the holes nicely (giggity). you probably cant see in the video because he plasti-dipped them black so he doesn't have to constantly clean them lol.

Thats actually a really good idea ..im so stuck on what to get ughhhh the exhaust is one of my favorite things about the car and im sooo unsure of what to get ..I loved the sound of the cobb but it just wasnt loud enough ..im thinking of going corksport or ur and if theyre not loud enough fucking with the resonators. Have you heard the cs or ur in person? Only thing I dont want is drone everything else can be fixed. And is a catless dp really that much louder?

I just got my e cut out installed on my corksport test pipe today along with some 4.5 stainless tips on my stock cbe. The cut out at anything but idle is deafening lol so if you're looking for really loud and not a lot of $$ its a great option vs the high price of an aftermarket cbe. Plus being able to reduce the exhaust noise when needed is great.

UR CBE is the loudest and deepest out of Cobb, CS, and UR (it doesn't have a resonator). You won't be disappointed. Sounds even better in person

I have a UR TBE and it sounds amazing. I still feel however that this contends in terms of a deep exhaust. This was the original version of the corksport CBE with corksport catless TP and stock down pipe I believe

Thank you, much appreciated. That was pretty much the exact answer I was looking for, and such a simple short statement lol. I think im just gonna go with that. Since you like your setup so much, do you have the ur cb? what brand dp do you use and is it catless? and do you run a testpipe or something else? Thanks again.

Can someone please explain to me why people will spend hundreds of dollars on a strictly cosmetic mod? I can't understand why you wouldn't take that money and buy something useful such as an AP, Internals, a really expensive blowjob, and a few other things that would make this NSFW. If OP already has those mods, put it towards a new turbo or get some meth in ya. Anything is better than just spending cash on an exhaust for sound.

One of my favorite things about any car I own and mod is the exhaust tone and decibal. Theres nothing like hearing mean ass cars rip down the roads around my house, and I want mine to be one of them. I always want my cars to sound good.. Plain and simple I would never spend money on something I KNEW wouldnt make me as happy as something else I could pay for and would be cheaper at that. I dont ever see a big turbo in my future unless I somehow get an extra motor that I could use as a backup, because spending $24k for a car and not being able to drive it because it has a blown motor makes no sense to me. I dont trust big turbos. I already have internals and an ap.

No I only had it on my old car for around 10 hours before I totaled the car, so I didnt get a chance to do anything with it. But this is a really good video..

Do either of you guys think if I go with a catlless dp itll still sound good? The setup will be catless ur dp and resonated ur tp, ur cbe. Thats what im gonna try first, and if I still dont like it im gonna get the resonator cut out.

If you have internals and an AP, get an intake, downpipe, and midpipe. All of that can be had for the price of a CBE and it will actually add power instead of sounding like it did.

As far as BT's go, there are plenty of people here running BT's making some solid power and the car is still reliable. Hell, i'll be swapping turbo's soon and adding meth and then a new intercooler. CBE is the last thing on the list of mods. just my .02. exhausts just don't make sense to me unless they are making power. ugh, it's late. getting all bitchy.

Do not get a resonated TP. Get the catless UR TP and the UR CBE with no resonators. Depending on if you care about emissions, just go catless DP too.

TBE = the entire exhaust (DP, TP, CBE)

You'll have no resonators and no cats. It'll sound good. If you haven't seen the Definitive Exhaust thread, you should. But it seems like most people looking for loud enjoy the UR one.

I am shitty at remembering screen names. How did you total the car?!? That sucks. Glad to see you stuck with the speeds. Since you have all the other parts I won't give ya shit.

Hit up the next meet at tonelli's on the 19th BTW. Get some face time in.

It depends on how loud you want your exhaust. Currently with my Sotck DP, Catless TP, CBE, it's pretty loud during cold start, and loud enough for me to be extremely cautious around cops. I don't want to get a catless downpipe because it will make it even louder and I cold start my car around 7:40am on week days, and it probably already annoys my neighbors. Also, at work I park in a parking structure and it's loud as shit when I cold start it. Sometimes i set off someones car alarm, but it echos a lot in there.

With a resonator and full catless exhaust it will probably sound pretty good. It will keep the deep tone but not be quite as loud. I heard that other people with a resonated test pipe still think it's loud. i don't know what it sounds like though. If you want it loud as possible skip the resonator.

I love the Stratified tune so far. Lex is a great tuner and knows a lot about this platform. Honestly though the e-tuners are probably just about on par with each other, so I don't think there will be a big difference between any of them.

I have the same setup as keko....catless test pipe and UR CBE. Cold starts are lloouudd. As I said before, being in the front seat isn't too bad, but I had passengers in the back and they couldn't hear a word I was saying.

If you start the car with the throttle slightly depressed (let off as soon as the engine catches) the engine won't rev to 2K and the exhaust won't be loud for cold starts. Works on all the Genpu's I've seen - takes a while longer to warm up this way but you won't set off alarms.

Forgot to try it out today, but it honestly is louder at 1500 RPM than it is at 1900-2000 where it initially goes to. Gets louder as it comes down.

Try it - works like a charm. I have the OBX (UR clone) and TP. Loud as snot otherwise... I don't always do it this way - only when I'm parked in front by all the apartments. Otherwise, I'd wake the dead on a cold morning. lol

I know what you mean by getting louder ... the initial spike at 2K isn't bad, then a few second later it starts to growl like a pissed of bear with a megaphone.

You'll have no resonators and no cats. It'll sound good. If you haven't seen the Definitive Exhaust thread, you should. But it seems like most people looking for loud enjoy the UR one.
Ya thats just what im gonna do. And no emissions arent an issue, I had a catless full atp dp on my first speed. I have seen that thread but I dont think theres a video of the exact setup im looking to get. BTW do you play fifa?

Hit up the next meet at tonelli's on the 19th BTW. Get some face time in.

I rear-ended some asshole stopped in the middle of some major highway around my way. He slammed on his brakes while I was trying to merge lanes, I didnt even have a chance to get my foot on the brake pedal. And I definitely will, got some upcoming time off of work that would be the perfect time to pop my nator cherry.

Do either of you guys think different brand catless dp's sound different from each other? Like I said above I had a full catless atp dp on the old speed and if sound doesnt change, ill just order that one again instead of piecing two different pipes together..

You may get a slightly different sound from the Corksport do because of the divorced waste gate but they all typically sound the same. I had a good time installing my cs dp

The CS DP is unique, but I would personally go for a solid piece instead of a divorced design - less restriction even though its probably marginal
if cost is a factor EBAY it up, lots of people use cheap "made in china" downpipes and have no problems (longevity and fitment is what you get from name brand)

Just noticed your other thread about totaling your black MS3... damn, glad your ok and shit worked out in your favor
