Default F&CKING MICE!!!!

My wife and I moved back up to Massachusetts about 2 weeks ago and are renting a house without a garage.

Its a bit of a country setting and being paranoid I did set some mice traps in the crawl space under the house.

Sure as shit, two traps, two dead mice. Yeah me.

I have been repeating the process every day, fun ritual, and almost every morning I get at least one.

The driveway runs up right along side of the house, so I knew I should be checking the air box. (SRIs off for the winter)

This afternoon I took my filter out and damn if they weren't building a nest in the air box.
The thing that really sucks is, they ate through the filter. No idea how many miles I have been driving with my new high flowing mouse modified filter.

Went over to my wife's car and they had started building a nest in hers as well.

F!

I hate the smell of mothballs so I purchased some peppermint oil. I soaked some cotton balls in it and tossed them into the air box.

We will have to see how well it works. Tomorrow I will pick up a new filter for mine, so that I can get around until I put the SRI back on.

What I am almost more worried out is what other crap are they likely to do? I was thinking about getting a spray bottle and spraying the peppermint oil on any wires that I can see.

I also put two mouse traps by the front wheels of each car.

If anyone has a similar story and what they did to mitigate it, I would love to hear it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Honestly,if its EVERY night you're pulling em from traps I would ask the landlord/rental agency about having an exterminator come. Let them go through it top to bottom and seal off all the nook and crannies. I know from experience that they will just keep fucking coming if you try to do it with traps. They will also eventually figure the traps out. I had to switch baits 5 or 6 different times (eventually used candy) and even then they stopped working but we still had mice.

I lol'd at the "mouse modified filter"...sorry to hear about your troubles. Agree that the landlord is responsible. You're the renter, they're the owner. It's not on you to solve this problem.

I have lots of pack rats in my area, and no matter how many I kill, they migrate and end up back in the area.

If mice are anything like pack rats, they will do bad things to your car. They will chew wires and hoses, they will make a nest, they will leave pee and crap everywhere, and they can carry parasites on them and in there nests. Tell tale signs they may be thinking of setting up camp - little turds, little spots of pee, and stash of seeds and fluffy stuff they find to nest.

I have a car port, so I leave my hood open every night. Rats don't like open spaces. They will still get on the skid plate. In winter, they like a nice warm motor to curl up next to. I also regularly catch and kill, but the best way to get rid of them is find and destroy there nests. A lot easier for pack rats, as they live outside, mice likely to be in a home.

They figured it out? That's not encouraging.

Do you mean they didnt approach the traps, or they figured out how to get the bait without getting caught in them?

Also, what were you originally using for bait?

Peanut butter has always done the trick for me.

Thats the other thing, I am not seeing any in the living areas of the house. Just the basement/crawlspace and the cars.

The property does not have a garage or car port, so I dont want to leave the hoods open.

I am thinking about spraying the peppermint spray over any exposed wiring. I know that sounds stupid, but apparently they dont like the smell of it.

First peanut butter, then they stopped going for it.....then peanutbutter with crackers on top of em.....then finally peanut butter with uh...Gobstoppers? stuck on top.

Yep everything would work for a week or 2 then they figure it out. I.e none dead but you could still hear them. Switch baits, turn off lights, 5 minutes go by....SNAP! As long as the bait you use is small enough to just cover the trigger they wont USUALLY get it off without tripping it though.

Wow those are some spoiled mice! Damn though, that sounds like a never ending battle.

The bitch about it is, the cars are outside.

I dont know how you deal with a mice problem by focusing on the inside.

Get this, I destroyed a family of mice in a day. Put some dog kibble in the end and got 6-7 in a day.

Took care of my mouse problem in less then a week

It's also easy to empty if you or your lady is squemish. Just dump it in the garbage. throw another kibble in there and turn it back on.

It's also funny if you watch one go inside the little fuckers dance when they get shocked.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I just ordered it, with Prime will be here December 3rd.

If it works that good, it is worth every penny.

Thanks!

My Mom had one of the original MR2s, it was gorgeous.

Our male cat would mark his territory by spraying on the wheels. Definitely messed up the finish over time.

That said, I would welcome a little cat piss if they were mouse assassins.

You can get little baggies of mice repellent that you can just put one in youre engine bay. Works wonders for storing your car. The ones i have are good for a 400sq. Ft area per bag. I have no mice.

Flame thrower..... the only way. They may be field mice too which love to invade the walls of homes in the winter. I would google search some storage techniques, found some helpful tips.

This stuff?

Based on reviews, it doesn't sound too effective in an outdoor environment. One review claimed it didn't stop rodents from entering their car.

I read one suggestion of soaking cotton balls in peppermint oil and placing them in an Altoids tin that has holes poked into it. The person making the suggestion claimed it worked just as well as the product above -- and they were using it under the hood of their car as well...

The above product has a 30 day lifespan...

I like the suggestion to talk to the land Lord. Also, how about mouse poison? And that zapper will do some damage

It was a small extermination company but all exterminators will have something similar like the ones a couple posts earlier. Parked my truck at buddies farm for a full year with one of those and no mice. Car is currently stored with one as well haha.

The ones i have were a higher quality. 6 month life span. 6 for 30 bucks. Used them in semis that sit all year till harvest. They worked but it varies by quality. An exterminator company will probably have better ones than that.

For the last two nights we have not caught anything. I dont know if that is a good sign, or doesnt mean anything. I have traps set in front of the tires of both cars.

Tomorrow I am going to pick up some marshmallows to rule out them getting tired of peanut butter.

Also put my Cobb SRI on so that I can at least see the airfilter by just opening the hood.

Double pisses me off. I have a really good tune that Justin did for me on the stock air box.

Now I got to figure out what map to run for the short term.

My brother bought an old Honda Nighthawk that the owner sold really cheap because he couldn't get it to run for more than a second or two. He thought the carbs were shot and really didn't know much about engines. So we pulled out the air box and it was filled with dog food. Mice had been using it for winter storage. They also ripped apart the filter, I guess to use it for bedding or something.

Sure enough we emptied out the box and it ran like a champ.

Its amazing how fast it can happen. We have only been here for about 2 -3 weeks. I was setting traps and catching them within the first 4 days of being here.

They probably went through my air filter within one night.

Most people on this forum have some sort of SRI, so they probably don't have the issue with them nesting in the air box.

I am just glad I was concerned enough to check.

If you are going to live rural, get a cat, or two; grow mint (it spreads like a weed) or catnip (related to mint, likely why mice stay the hell away from both). Electric traps work great, wash your hands before you empty the traps and after (damned things can smell you) peanut butter seems to be the best bait I have found. If your house/shed/garage has boxes/clutter in it (laughing, mine certainly does) make certain there is a gap between it and the walls; if you are infested get your landlord involved but as a landlord (and someone who has had to deal with this first hand) I can tell you that an exterminator will be able to deal with the immediate concerns but how (and where) you live will decide how long those results will last... They can squeeze throw dime sized holes (they can make those as well) but will only do so if they find your digs hospitable.

hahaha...too funny.

OP, I am in Mass too.

I go through this all the time. My dad too he is near the Cape.

Just keep setting traps with Peanut Butter and check every day.

Helpful hints. If you ever have a set of seats that you took out or are storing somewhere BE SURE THEY ARE IN YOUR HOUSE and not in the attic or garage where the mice are.

Mice will build a nice nest in your Recaros or whatever. Ask me how I know? (ha!)

Similar story. I bought a nice 1950's Kay hollowbody guitar out of a garage a few months back (here in Mass). Original owner had it stored in the rafters of his garage in the hardshell case.

I opened it up and the smell of dead mouse smacked me in the face. A mouse had built a full blown condo inside the guitar and died!

I took off the input switch plate and shook out the dead mouse and TONS of nest that he had built including a flannel shirt in there are all torn up and packed in neatly.

Im still working on getting the dead mouse smell out. "Nilodor" is the product in case anybody ever has this problem.

Fucking mice are crafty little pests.

Tip- keep the peanut butter on the trigger and then push the marshmallow down onto it so it sticks.....if you just set the marshmallow on top of it they may sniff it and knock it off without tripping it.

The most effective mouse killer will always be cats. Get a couple mousers, and supplement with traps, in places like the attic where the cats don't go.

Its funny, I went to the local ACE hardware store to pick up some extra mouse traps, and you wouldn't believe the section that was dedicated to mouse and rat stuff.

They even sell the electric traps, which I had never even heard of until @ImGryssLOL suggested them.

Obviously this area of the state has a LOT of mice running around it.

Came across this and it reminded me of this thread:
