FML

I got rear ended today by a 1995 suburban filled with tools. FML :(

The hatch opens and closes so i was like ok not to bad but still FML.
Then i checked under the bumper.

After seeing this i knew my frame was tweaked so i looked at my b+c pillers and there wavy F M L. I apologize for the badly rotated pic this is betweed the triangle window and the wing.

How bad is this? This is my first accident (33) and it blows i love my car. I really think its totaled due to the fact that there is frame damage...

[R]usty 12-19-2013 10:49 AM

Well if the frames not bent you could be okay here. Looks like the bumper, bumper cover, and rear hatch door need to be replaced then good as new. As long as the frames not bent you're okay.

Can you post more pictures of hatch open and more shots from under the car? It's hard to tell extent of frame damage by the pictures you posted.

Roddiy 12-19-2013 10:50 AM

If that's indeed frame damage I'd part out before insurance comes to get it.

Sucks to hear though.

mrtheandrew 12-19-2013 10:51 AM

i can't say for sure, but from the only accident i was ever involved with, take your estimate for damages and multiply it by 3. did you look under your trunk liner in the spare tire area for damage as well?

did the other driver have insurance?

I think youll b ok. Go to a preferred shop suggested by ur ins. co because the labor rate will b cheaper therefore not skyrocketing the amount. A set up and measure on a frame machine will determine if/how much is tweaked but nothing to worry about, happens all the time. If its off they can just do a frame pull

The dent was from one of the suburban's big ass tow hooks just below the front bumper. It was a 40 mph crash. It looks like the hook hit and raised the part it hit.

I hope so. I will be going to there "prefered centers" to get a estimate . The thing that makes me dirty going htere is usally cheap rates = cheap work in the repair biz.

socaltouch13 12-19-2013 11:59 AM

Not necessarily. I use to be an estimator and we had our ins co that gave us work. If we wanted to keep their accounts we had to keep customers happy. Get another estinate and compare. Report back to see if theu added set up and measure time on ur frame and only until u leave it at a shop till they complete tear down will u know the full extent of ur damage. Ultimately its up to u where u wanna get it fixed at

Glad you are OK. These things usually have a way of sorting themselves out, especially when you aren't @ fault.

LMK if you need anything.

Gixxer2k4 12-19-2013 12:03 PM

Why are you having to pay your deductible if they had insurance? Or did you claim it on your insurance to get it started faster?

socaltouch13 12-19-2013 12:05 PM

Yes go through their insurance and u pay nothing pkus u can request a rental at their expense. It does prolong the overall process a lil as well goin through others ins tho

That suck man, at least it was not your fault.

That is what I am always afraid of is being rear ended. That why I put LED brake lights, and turn signals, added in the LED CorkSport rear reflector kit to act as extra blinkers, and then got a Kahtec third brake light flasher and installed it. Blinks 8 times rapidly every time I hit the brake pedal. I don't give a heck if it bothers people, as long as it helps to alert people better.

And they wont see any of that while looking at their cell phone.

It is so true. Stupid people.

[R]usty 12-19-2013 12:53 PM

Yup people are dumb and could give a shit. I was bumped about a month ago (no damage) at a dead stop. Lady claims she didn't see my car. My car... the brightest fucking blue car on the road, on the sunniest day. My guess is she was probably texting or saw something shiny.

She was lucky there was no damage... I still grilled her anyway.

That's my biggest fear on my motorcycle. This year I got a motodynamics LED tail light for my Ducati and it blinks several times when you touch either brake. Don't really know if it makes a difference when people are fucking around with their phones and not looking at all, but I least I feel a little safer, that and the .38 in my boot.

I'm really surprised the other guys insurance company hasn't contacted you. I had a similar incident and the company called me that night and had an adjuster out the next day. My frame was all jacked so mine was totaled but they paid for a rental car for me for a week and I had a check in a couple days. USAA insurance is the bomb. Don't pay your deductible, it'll take you forever to recover it. It's up to their insurance not yours to fix it.

Glad to see you're OK.
Nothing should come out of your pocket.
Afterall, he hit you first...

I got rear endes a few years back with the pu. The other driver was cited by the cop that came to the scene. He got a ticket for not being in cobtrol of his vehicle so it was a no contest case. Damages were just over 4k to fix. New bumper, fix tailgate, and unibody damage

Glad ur ok and gl with getting it back on the road

When I got rear-ended a few years ago I called my insurance agent (Liberty Mutual) right afterwards and they took care of it for me. So I didn't have to wait for them to call me and deal with any crap. Went to a LibMut adjuster, did all the dealings through them, and they just exchanged money with the other company behind the scenes. Never hurts to call your people and ask what the easiest solution is. They're more likely to give you a good answer since they have nothing to lose.

At least you're ok. That's always the important part. Just let insurance do what it does. Depending on the claim value and the shop, you can sometimes get the shop to "toss in some extras." My roommate got nailed by a biker in his 04 3. A week later he for some reason had an 07 front end and an SRI.

not to derail this thread, but ive been researching that third brake flasher....do you know if theres a way to speed up the flashes? I'd like it to flash like 10 times in a second, almost like an ambulance or fire truck does when they hit the brake (at least they do around me)

Any luck on getting a write-up on how to install the Kahtec? Looks cool but i'm a little leery of hacking up factory harnesses.

ISorry to hear about the accident and glad you're OK. 40mph is a pretty good hit. I actually just got my car out of the body shop after it was hit by a tow truck. Was a low speed hit, but the truck was heavy, so what should have been a love tap turned out to be a $3200 repair. I didn't have any warping of the C-pillar though, so expect your work to cost more.

File the claim against HIS insurance. No out of pocket for you, with possibly the exception of a deposit on your rental car, which you should get back when turning it back in. Personally, I went to two different body shops for estimates, and also went to the dealership for a mechanical inspection. Despite my two estimates, the insurance company still insisted on getting one of their own, which almost exactly matched the one from the shop I selected.

I also started the conversation with the adjuster regarding a diminished value claim. You may have the potential to recover this since the accident was not your fault. Google it and read as much as you can. I would post some links, but a lot of the informational sites also want to sell you diminished value estimates, and I don't want to violate any potential forum rules.

It works like this: prior to this accident, your car had a sale/trade-in value of X dollars. I this age of CarFax, because of this accident, even if properly repaired to pre-accident condition, your car is now worth Y dollars. The difference is the diminished value. Basically if your car was sitting on a dealer lot right next to another car with the EXACT same options, mileage, etc., your car is worth less because it has been previously damaged. This can easily be in the thousands of dollars, even without frame damage. This site can give you an estimate on what you're looking at, is easy to use, and is the site many dealers use to calculate trade-in values:

Brace yourself for the effects on your value. Personally, my car is a 2013, and as mentioned before my repair came out to $3200+. My estimate on diminished value came out to just over $4k. Yep...my value hit is actually HIGHER than the cost of repairing the damage. My first offer from the insurance company is around $650, so obviously they want to keep the cost to themselves down, but DV is a negotiation, so I'll keep working it....and so should you.

Also, make sure that you insist on OEM replacement parts on your car, and that the body shop can prove they used them. Failing to use OEM parts can void your warranty. That's advice straight from the dealer. Expect any repair duration estimates from the body shop to double...getting MS3 parts is SLOW. I was quoted 6 days for the repair. Took 2 weeks...the hatch doors have to be drop shipped from overseas I think.

Sorry for the length of the post...just trying to relate my experience with a situation similar to yours in the last 2 months. Good luck, and don't let the insurance company roll you.

+1 on getting the MS3 parts. Many places will assume it uses similar bits to a mazda3.

Yousuf 12-30-2013 08:39 AM

It cost $900 just to fix a little screw mark from when I got rear-ended, really low speed too
