Fucking rattle

Oi,

I have a rattle coming from left rear inside. I've had all the stuff out floor panel etc to no avail. This shit is pissing me off. Any suggestions?

It just dawned on me while posting this that I should haul the shit out and drive it without it in to determine if any of that shit is making the rattle... yes I know rocket science. Have any of you experienced rattle from inside other than the mysterious one that happens in the gauge cluster - which btw is one of the silver rings around tach/speedo.

ON a slightly related note - there is a wonderful squeak that occurs when I haul my fat ass out of the car. Have you greased your zirks? Do shops usually do this or should I add a grease gun to my collections of messy tools?

I ordered some parts from edgeautosports the other day - WOW amazing customer service.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

G

rattles.... you should ride in my car . :headbang:

warlord 11-30-2011 11:03 AM

Rear seatbelt tensioners? They rattled on my 2010 MZ3 hatchback.

Paul 11-30-2011 11:29 AM

my front passenger door has a rattle/tick... omg makes me want to punch babies

mceatalot 11-30-2011 04:35 PM

This kinda thing is scaring me. I had all kinds of rattles in my '07 Camry SE. Beautiful car, but just couldn't take the rattles.

Maybe it's a good thing I'm holding off on buying an MS3 until all these issues are addressed.

Jake_MS3 11-30-2011 04:46 PM

My e-break handle rattles sometimes. Only started since the instillation of my RMM.

ChokeMeiLikeIt 11-30-2011 05:02 PM

yup, rattle in front pax door. not nearly as bad as some weird sounds i get from the center of the dash under the front windshield when i have a passenger in the car.

its a sporty car, gonna have rattles.

Not sure if any manufacturer can get all the rattles out, the last 4 new vehicles (Ford, Dodge, Mazda and another Mazda) all have had some form of rattle/noises that needed to be fixed. The last car that didnt have rattles was a used 98 Ford.

Best thing to do is try your best to find the rattles on the test drive but most seem to appear a week after you buy your new car.

with regards to the OP, i just had my car in for service for rattles behind the dash and behind the nav unit near the windshield,. neither were fixed and they may have made it worse,. I think i will wait until spring before trying again.

f-castrillo 12-01-2011 01:48 AM

I have rattles coming from my driver-side vent, and rear view mirror. Placing a hand on either of them stops the rattles.

There's another rattle coming from the front-passenger side, but I haven't been able to isolate it yet. :(

infeKteDx 12-01-2011 05:56 AM

I have a really annoying rattle/squeak from the hatch door / back area somewhere, it drives me INSANE.

predapio 12-01-2011 06:21 AM

Shit nigs, wait til you have a RMM and winter sets in....happy times.

Try lightly lifting the overhead liner in the middle near your rearview mirror. Just stick your finger in there and see if that get's rid of the passenger side rattle you hear.

rigor 12-01-2011 07:00 AM

turn the radio up a Little, that is how i fixed mine

ps don't take it in to have it fixed, they will have to break half the shit to get to the rattle, then you will develop 10 more rattles

gl

galens47 12-01-2011 10:23 AM

RMM and winter is wonderful.

Its a back hatch thingy and I've been doing the radio fix.

As for putting off purchase due to rattles - foolish IMO, the car is too fucking fun and to waste time away makes me cry...lol

I've got an install day on the horizon and plan to work on it at that time as well as greasing my zirks.

Rattles = punching babies, rattles = tax audit, rattles = dolphin tuna ina can. Thanks for sharing. I suppose misery in company is better.

Cheers,

G

I have a serious rattle in the back behind the rear seats, and I think it's seat belt related. Sounds like cheap plastic, like if you knock the seat belt clasps together, but it ain't that. My buddy sat in back while I drove and it was like searching for a rat scurrying back there. Never found it. It's making me wanna get rid of this car.

infeKteDx 01-24-2012 09:24 PM

Is it directly behind your rear seats ? I had a HORRIBLE rattling that sounded exactly like cheap plastic, I pinpointed it in the locking mechanism in the trunk door. (had to remove the plastic lining and drive around with friend in the back like you did) ...had dealership replace locking mechanism and it's completely gone now. yay.

skawt01 01-24-2012 09:41 PM

We couldn't pinpoint it, but yeah, definitely coming from the cargo area somewhere. He pushed out on the hatch near the lock but it continued. I'll try it again and focus on the lock mechanism and hopefully nail it.

How'd you go about convincing the dealer that the lock was the culprit? My dealer has played the "we heard nuthin" card for other noise probs to date.

Thx for the input.

It was loud, and it made the sound everytime I drove. I made them do a ride along, and when it started I said..."Tell me you DON'T hear that?" Had a tech in the back messing with the locking mechanism, he was almost certain he fixed it like THREE times, only for me to drive back after a test drive and tell them it still did it. You can't stop it by pushing on the mechanism. So I went in, and said "So what, am I shit out of luck then?" and the guy at the counter said something along the lines of "nope, we're gonna order you a new locking mechanism, under warranty." ....I was REALLY happy considering the noise made me almost sell the car.

taf0422 01-24-2012 09:47 PM

mine has a dash rattle. I have no idea how to make is stop so I just turn up the radio as well.

When it gets below 30 degrees out the cup holder area rattles as well. I just put my arm on the arm rest and it goes away.

also galens47. lol to your blue footed boobie

tddvrrn 01-24-2012 10:50 PM

i have had every single one of these rattles, plus a mystery dash rattle that i fixed by shoving microfiber cloths up under my dash into every crevice i could reach. i just fixed a few that had eluded me today in the armrest..

all the rattles can be fixed. here is your arsenal
:
dash - open cell foam to fill voids and butyl rope to stop rattles betwen panels
doors - tons of butyl rope and sound/heat shield off ebay, plus some open cell foam in voids..
wing - butyl rope
hatch - moved latch so it shut tighter, filled inside of hatch with open cell foam
sub - put mesh over port so shit stopped rolling into it, steel plate and butyl rope to stop it from resonating so badly
center console - open cell foam and butyl rope
stereo - thin foam tape and butyl rope
glove box - velcro and felt pads
under dash - micro fiber cloths and zip ties

have at it!

forcedinduktion 01-24-2012 11:02 PM

my armrest makes noise when you put pressure on it. drives me crazy because its just a habit to place my arm there

There is no escaping rattles if you have any motor mounts installed in your car.

I have JBR's trilogy mounts in 88/88/80 durometer. Here is a list of things that rattle in my car.

1. gauge cluster
2. steering column cover
3. right side dash (bolts may have come loose)
4. glove box
5. arm rest
6. cup holder
7. shifter console
8. rear seat belt tensioners
9. rear spoiler

You can pretty much see, it's inevitable lol. I tried fixing all these rattles with felt tape/foam etc to no avail.

adrager622 01-31-2012 08:59 PM

^^ my gauge cluster rattles now as is and I haven't even installed my JBR RMM. Easy solution, turn the radio up.

skawt01 02-14-2012 09:11 AM

Got back from dealer yesterday re: rear rattle (it was road rage inducing loud). It was the lock striker/latch assembly so they put some tape on it. They contacted Mazda tech line and were told there's no fix. So they ordered new striker and latch part but admitted it was a long shot. This car should come w/ a roll of 3M Non Woven Rayon tape in the glove box.

Kawiralph 02-14-2012 11:14 AM

i had the same problem. Fixed it with some silicone adhesive.

skawt01 02-14-2012 02:56 PM

So'd you just squirt a bead of it around/on the striker and call it good? Or on the cheap plastic latch part? Seems like a longer lasting fix than the tape.

bigriver 02-14-2012 03:13 PM

The scissors jack will also cause a rattle or loud clunk.

Just place some silicone adhesive between the latch and the trunk door and fix it with tape over night. Has worked for about a half a year now and withstood summer and winter temps.

rear spoiler has been coming loose and rattles and after washing the car today, i noticed the thing looks like it's gonna fall off.

been lazy about it and haven't even really looked at it yet, looks like a couple bolts with a little rubber boot over the head of the bolt/screw....is it just a matter of tightening it up or does it not help and i gotta find some more reinforcement somehow to get that cheap piece of shizznit to stay put?

I also had the same issue. I replaced the nut and a few weeks later I was able to fish it out by gutting out the hatch and sacrificing 2 telescopic magnetic picker upper thingys.

The rattling in the hatch was gone.

Installing the JB 88 Trilogy has brought on a new onslought of rattles and gear whines. :)

MammaFreed3 04-22-2012 09:11 AM

i took a look at it this morning, the two end nuts came off completely. managed to recover one of them, i guess the other is still floating around in there. the right center one was loose and just finger tightened it which actually made a big difference but shit......you gotta clear like 1 1/2" with the socket just to get to the nut and there's no getting a wrench in there, guess i gotta try and find an extra long 10mm socket to tighten down the rest. went to home depot to find the nuts i lost but they didn't have any with the bottom flange. i can already see an all week hunt in my area for this shit.

Soothfast 04-22-2012 09:36 PM

The only rattle I have that really gets on my tits is somewhere in the roof on the passenger side. When I put my hand against the passenger side sun visor, say, it'll stop. I don't know what's causing it (probably wiring for the dome lights) or how to get at it without accidentally wrecking something.

Godzilla 04-23-2012 05:59 PM

My 2011 has been plagued with rattles for over 8 months now. I take it to the dealer for warranty every time a new one happens. Had one in the rear, after replacing a pair of shocks, the dealer figured out it was the rear hatch latch, and replaced the assembly. A rattle from the glove box area turned out to be an airbag mount after three visits. A rattle from the front of the dash/windshield was a lose windshield cowl. Also the dealer replaced a driver side vent, a passenger side top mounted "oh shit" handle, and fished out a few things from the shifter console, that get in there through the cup holders. I also had a loud squeaking noise when the car experiences changes in acceleration while its is cold - the dealer replaced the flywheel, but later it turned out to be a lose gasket in the exhaust somewhere. My advice to you, call Mazda Canada/USA, bitch to them, and then drag it to the dealership until they fix the rattly piece of shit, and demand a loaner car while yours is living there. I hope this helps.

same here, only I can't figure out how to get the nut tightened down because the bolt is so long and a standard socket won't fit over it. i also gotta find another nut, recovered 1 from the inside, the other is apparently just gone or still floating around in there. if someone knows a better way of accessing the bolts to put the nuts back on without taking half the damn car apart, I'm all ears.

That nut can be taken out if you get it with a magnet from the outside.

You have to place the magnet over the hole (outside hole with the wing off) and open and close the hatch slowly.

IMO, it will be hard to isolate / fix a rattle with nuts rolling around in the hatch.

I was thinking about this the other day and I wonder if you checked the distance of your PMM and the inner wall since you installed it. I was double checking the bolt torque on my RMM and PMM a week after I installed them and I noticed the PMM was practically touching the inner wall on the right hand side. You are supposed to have at least a 3/16" of gap there. I think doing this, in addition to the TMM significantly lowered the felt vibrations, but not the noise.

I tried that, it didn't work. I had to take the inner panel off in order to gain access to the center of the hatch. I ended up using 2 cheap telescopic magnet dealies and bending them to breaking. Then I raised and lowered the hatch until one of them caught the offending nut. This was almost an hour process because there was barely any room to work.

I haven't tried to figure it out yet, but if I had to guess, either using rubber tape, or 3m tape to stick the two pieces together.

Mine does have a gap there.. I read the instructions carefully the first time. It's torqued properly, so the mount hasn't moved at all.

This trick works. I used 3m industrial outdoor velcro. When 2 pieces are velcro'd together it creates like a 5mm think double sided tape. Used that to wedge it between the head liner and the roof. It applies a little downward pressure on the front of the headliner and gets rid of the rattle.

Good to know, when I stop being lazy I'll get some of that velcro and do the same thing.

I'm gonna have to check and see if that's what's making the clunk on my car...only when I hit bumps going around corners and shit. I figured it was my 3" UR CBE clunking off of something in the rear end. Seems it's about when I put it on that the clunk started happening.

I think I got a rattle on my13. Sounds like stones or marbles ( small ones ) under the floor board jiggling around at speeds above 50. Or it might be coming from the gauge area.

Passenger seat back rattles in mine. Drove me nuts until I figured it out.

Mount trio rattles much more pronounced. Oh well fuck. I like not having wheel hop.

i had a mega annoying rattle from the passenger seat. i unbolted it, tilted it back and checked for tightness. everything was ok.. hmmm, odd.

a week later i found a chopstick inside the seatback cover that i had randomly unzipped. it had been rattling against the seat frame. uh... i guess my car was made in japan...

Speaking of rattles, I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with their driver side window, constantly rattling when it is in any other position but up?

I took my car to my local Mazda dealership 4 times for this problem now, and they messed around with the control arm, and some other things, but never ended up fixing the window. They told me that this is normal operation for the window, and that I just have to deal with it. The service manager informed me to just spray silicone spray on all moving parts until the problem corrects itself, but they themselves would not do this. Any suggestions?

Other than that my genpu shows the same behaviour and the stealer has no solution, no...

I had rattles coming from the dome lighting area. Got it fixed under warranty.

zedekias 01-05-2014 04:02 PM

Can someone clarify how they fixed their latch/locking mechanism rattle?

Mine is insanely loud. I've tried moving the latch back and forward.

What did you do with the silicone adhesive or open cell foam??

I refuse going to dealer. I don't have time for that.

do you have a picture of where you applied the silicone adhesive? I already adjusted the latch, but it still rattles. need to try this to see if it works. Thank you!

For the record I've done the spoiler fix. Added butyl rope and tightened all bolts.

I had my gf sit in the hatch yesterday while I drove and it's definitely coming from the latch area.

Yousuf 01-06-2014 06:32 AM

My sunglasses holder rattles sometimes and it stops completely when I just support it with my hand, also I've been hearing something slight from the seatbelt near where you adjust them from, mainly the drivers side. I just ignore it :violin:

I have a 2013 with 1500 miles and it rattles like a 89 Honda. Annoying as fuck and makes the car feel cheap.

Anybody else repeatedly bash the spot u think is rattling and hope it goes away?

Yousuf 01-06-2014 08:24 AM

If anything don't you think repeatedly bashing the trouble spots would make the problem worse

oOfactoryOo 01-06-2014 10:19 AM

So far no rattles on my 13. Right around 12000 km. JBR 88RMM going on today though, things might get loud lol

I don't know if bashing the "trouble" area is gonna fix it...check your sunglasses holder and latch area. Also make sure your glove box is completely shut...I had some papers stuck in it which caused it not to latch properly and it rattled bad.

I have a distinct noise coming from the driver side corner vent by the windshield. Bashing it made it slightly quieter but still incredibly annoying. And then I believe my passenger seat makes some sort of noise.

how did you fixed that rattle?

jgarmo 01-06-2014 11:25 PM

Idk about you guys, but having just bought this car, I have noticed rattle (it's from the snow mostly) It's literally the most annoying thing. It's always from snow/ice buildup behind my tires AND ice build-up INSIDE my fucking wheels! So it offsets the balance of the wheels and i think hits the rotors. Fucking annoying. I have to knock that shit off before I drive every day now.

Inside the wheels like.. behind the spokes. I have no smarts.

zedekias 01-07-2014 01:10 AM

So I did fix my hatch/latch rattle by wrapping the U shaped metal piece the hatch latches to with electrical tape.

So relieving. It sounds like driving a Lexus comparatively now.

I get the same thing. I had to pull over on the highway the other day it was so bad. Can't wait for winter to be over!

Back hatch creaks and groans like crazy when temps drop below 50*
Had the tech re-tighten the spoiler wing nuts last week when I changed the oil @ 2300 miles...made no difference...
I'm happy that it doesn't stay cool here in Houston for very long..

Forgot to mention the slightly muffed rattle in the middle of the dash behind the info screen close to the windshield..
My 2003 Protege5 had less rattles when I bought it new...:angryfire:

makjur 01-08-2014 03:54 PM

When it started to get colder recently, November or so, I was given a rattle in my 2010... sounds like its coming from the nav screen are, can't find anything loose, hitting it doesn't help... sometimes it goes away for a day, or a few minutes, I'm learning to ignore it

Also noticed that there is a high pitch almost whine from the belts when I start it up in sub 35* weather

So this is the only way known of fixing that latch? there's not a bolt or something that can be tightened? I just got this rattle a week ago after reading this thread for a different rattle =D

Some people were able to fix the rattle by unbolting the U shaped latch and moving it closer to the rear and retightening it.

It only helped my rattle marginally, but the tape fixed it completely. It's not noticeable so I don't really care that it's a little ghetto haha.

So guys, what to do about seatbelt tensioners? Dealer says they won't replace because it's not technically a malfunction and my mileage is already fairly high (warranty-wise).

What's the guarantee the new part won't develop the noise if I replace at my own cost?

How did you resolve it? Mine does the same thing. I just recline the back a little more and it stops.

NCspecV81 10-02-2015 01:11 PM

Sounds like a lot of you guys need a case of the movsies. Move to warmer climate.

hahaha, man that sounds my car makes in the winter is hilarious. I remember my first winter with the car, I got out the one morning just to make sure I didn't forget to move the shovel from the end of the driveway and wasn't dragging it with me.

At the end of the day, rattles are going to happen, especially if you're running any kind of upgraded mount. All part of the game. I can't hear much rattle these days between my music and mount vibes. Just part of ownership at this point. So long as I don't say hello to one of my rods, I'll take all the rattles.

duffman04 10-04-2015 01:02 PM

Dear GOD, thank you to whoever first mentioned the latch rattle. I tightened it up a bit and wrapped some electrical tape around the "U" shaped latch. Rattle is almost entirely gone. Has been driving me nuts for close to 2 months.
