Default Gas brands on 2012?

I noticed with my 2008 that the brand of gas I used really made a big difference in how much KR I got, that thing freakin' HATED Shell gas... I had the best luck with Chevron, Walmart/Murphy, and grocery store gas. Texaco & Exxon not so much.

Any of y'all notice this problem with the newer cars?

(No mods yet, that has some to do with it)

I got crazy KR with every brand except Shell. Ever since I've been using shell 91 I've had 0 issues with KR.

I just get the usual part throttle knock. As high as 6, but that is with a load under 1.0. Most likely it's just engine noise caused from the Jamie's 88 Molly and 80 PMM mounts. Wot runs are clean with KR reading as high as 0.8. And that's running 91.

All I can say is, fuck MA service stations. I filled up there once, and that's what started my whole misfire fiasco.

I use shell 99% of the time since they have a station right near my house. I never see KR over 1. The only other gas I used was BP every once in a while, and I also never had any significant KR with them.

Both 93 oct.

My grandfather delivered fuel for decades.

He delivered to many different "brand," stations all out of the same truck.

If you're detecting part throttle knock, that will happen on any brand and is nothing to worry about. If you're detecting large (more than 2) KR at WOT that's when it becomes a problem.

so, are you referring to pt kr or wot kr?

Partial, but it would get into the 5/6 range just giving it a little bit (and I mean little bit) of throttle to go around someone on a freeway, for example. I don't have any kind of logger/monitor in my 2012 yet, and it's stock, so I was just kinda wondering what others see on 2012's.

And I'm in TX, we get 93!!

part throttle will always knock. Nothing was wrong with any of the gas you tried unless it gave issues at WOT. @Lex did a write up on this and can explain it better. Use quality gas and there's no issue.

I guess it depends on your area, but you couldn't pay me to put Shell in my car. Some people have good luck with it, but I like BP.

Shell gas in my area @ least is knock prone.

I can actually notice a significant roughness in my idle when using Shell.

I find it interesting that one truck will deliver to multiple different "brand" stations.
I also like BP, but I had good results with Shell in my SRT. At 85k, my valves and intake tract looked like new. Ran nothing but Shell and BP. Mainly Shell.

Are you guys saying you get more Part throttle KR with Shell? Or during WOT?

its the same way for aircraft. Doesnt matter if you are selling BP, Avfuel, Chevron. You see the same trucks and the same drivers delivering to all FBO's from the same distributor. only difference was the price that is negotiated for each, and then how much they want to mark it up.

So it's all the same gas at each station? Meaning Shell stations have the same gas as Kroger?

i dont know all the inner workings for autos, since all my experience is in aviation... but this is how ive heard it is for lots of them. I was under the impression that AMPM has seperate gas (which is shit, but seperate at least) and Im sure this is the same for others as well, but i know that many, in Cali at least, share the same couple refineries.

I think much of the gas does come from the same refineries, but the additives that each company puts in differs.

Mellon tuning is one of the better e-tuners in the evo world, and he turned me onto BP a while ago.

you are correct, that is the only difference in gas you buy from different stations

Another good point to make is to look out for the age and quality of the gas stations pumps/tanks. Even a top tier station can have a shitty tank and have rust in the gas you buy.
@rfinkle2 My thead with 3 degreess of knock ended up being beucase of bad gas I bought from a gate gas station, which uses BP gas. I ran all of it out and put in shell and have not had any knock over .7, although I still need to do a maf cal. Scared the shit outa me tho.

It seems as though where you live in the world has a big influence on the additives used, and BP where you live, may very well be crapola.

If you notice, many of the top tier stations are listed as being "top tier" only in Canada, so that seems evidence to me that the additives vary from region to region.

I was a huge shell fan until they added nitrogen to the gas (I'm no chemist), but noticed a difference in knock, idle and in combination with a recommendation from someone I trust, decided to try BP and haven't tried anything else since.

(except e85 from a Shell station LOL)

The only reason I don't get KR with shell is because their 91 doesn't have ethanol in it. All other brands(petro/esso/even husky 94) have upto 10% ethanol in them. So idk how it is with Exxon or BP or any other brand down in the states. (ethanol wise).

For the most part, most gas stations purchase their gas in bulk from the same refineries and distributors. Your differences are really the individual station's in-ground tanks and potential additives. As far as what I have been told, Sunoco seems to have the highest consistency here in the central PA area, so I pretty much keep my Speed3 on a Sunoco 93 diet.

It seems to run without issue every time and has always proved to provide the best mileage in my N/A 3 in daily driving, unlike other stations like Sheetz, Rutters, and Turkey Hill which all seem to have a 50/50 chance of making my regular 3 want to sputter and misfire from time to time.

I call bullshit on your source and logic.

a.) Who said they don't have E in their 91?
b.) Ethanol reduces knock.

Used Chevron for most of 2011. I'm on a potential suicide mission and trying out Costco 91 octane this year. I hope WMI, the occasional Lucas/MMO additive to the fuel tank, and/or bi-annual Seafoams will be enough to keep my valves clean and happy.

(fyi, I've logged with the AP several times in varying ambient temps while using Costco 91, and I have ZERO KR, and my LTFTs and commanded vs. measured AFRs are pretty good)

He did further state that he had a sports car too, I believe a WRX, and that he thinks it still matters bec the different gas stations add addative's to their gas.

I can see his point? can you?

totally possible. I know very little about how auto gas companies manage their fuel. I do know that for aircraft, the fuel we received from the refineries was exactly the same no matter which brand it was, no additive was added to any of the fuel. That could just be an FAA thing though regulating exactly what is put into aircraft engines. For cars, that isnt nearly as important. Your car engine dies, you are pissed but you just pull over.

I could see different auto brands adding different stuff since they advertise so heavily on things like cleaner valves after "x" miles or "cleaner burning engine" etc.
