gas range

Just curious to know the gas range u have when the fuel gauge says zero. I just wonder if there was any in a reserve that kicks in or if the gauge actually meand zero

bwagers 11-01-2012 06:03 AM

Once it hits zero you are fucked. Don't do it.

dadderllama 11-01-2012 06:04 AM

Use teh google!!!! But auto manufacturers add in a little cushion after the light is on for idiots that like to push it... Range is dependent on how you drive.... I drove 20-30 miles once after the light came on while rushing to get to work.... I try not to push my luck...

There is actually a very easy way for you to figure this out for yourself.

A. Run down the tank until the gauge says zero.
B. Fill up.
C. Make note of how many gallons you put in the tank, this number is X.
D. Check your owners manual for fuel capacity of the tank, this number is Y.
E. Subtract X from Y to get Z. Z is the amount of fuel left in the tank when the gauge said you had none.

I suggest carrying a couple gallons of gas with you while you perform this experiment, lest you run out of gas and look like an idiot walking to the gas station because you were too lazy to just fill up when the light came on like a normal person.

I hit zero once in my old mz3 while going down the NY state thruway.

Long story short, a $95 bill for the towing service to bring me 3 gallons of gas two hours later...ugh fml...I never go below like 50 miles remaining now.

I was pulling up to the pump when my range hit 0 once. Car didnt cut off but i always just get gas when the light comes on. No need to go any further.

El_Diablo 11-01-2012 07:26 AM

Typically theres still around 20-40 miles depending on calibration and how you drive.

HOWEVER! This is not good for your in tank fuel pump. The in tank pump is cooled by fuel and you can severly shorten its life if you let it suck air or keep the tank low for extended periods. Also, going WOT and having a near empty tank can also be dangerous if you experiance a sudden lean condition while in boost... think severe fuel cut.

Best practice is to fill up with atleast 1/8th to 1/4 tank left.

I was coming in to post the same thing. I know it doesn't answer the question in the OP, but it is pretty sound advice. Best to go ahead and fill up whenever you get to around 1/8th of a tank and never worry about seeing the light come on.

Reminds me of the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer is test driving a car and he wants to see how many miles he can make it after the fuel light comes on!

I once drove 20 miles with the light on with 25% e85 in the tank in the worst stop-and-go socal traffic imaginable. Took me an hour, lol, but I made it haha.

2 gallons left at zero.

crankshaft 11-01-2012 11:03 AM

Well, once the last bar goes out, I can put in 13.5 gallons. If the tank truly holds 15.9 gallons, then my average of 24 mpg should net 57 miles assuming there is no unusable fuel on board. But, I would never purposely run the pump dry.

gregshin 11-01-2012 01:01 PM

i drove about 5 miles after the indicator said 0 on the fwy at about 55mph trying to stretch it finally made it to a gas station.

i was sweating bricks!

Sweetsandman 11-01-2012 08:41 PM

I've driven a little more than halfway to work and nearly home (the gas station less than a mile from my house) with the range indicator saying "0"...that totalled about 35 miles....I'm sure I could've gone further...but 35 miles of "oh shit" reserve was enough for me.

I Tapped that

ANITIX87 11-02-2012 01:05 PM

I've found that the Pu has 3 gallons left when the gas light comes on, and 1.5 gallons left when the last bar disappears. I was driving to Miami (from NY) and didn't know how far apart gas stations were on I-75. I went 62 miles with the gas light on. Managed 35 of them after the car's range indicated 0. The tank only took 15.3 gallons, so I could, presumably, have gone another 10-15 miles.

I'll never fucking do that again, though. I was so scared that my new car (less than 1,500 miles on it) was going to crap itself.
