Just installed, used oem gasket, it leaked, bought a new gasket still leaks but not as bad. Bought the exhaust used but u can tell it's barely used, previous owner stated it had maybe 1-2k miles on it, its pretty obvious bec it looks brand new.

Thinking maybe the flanges were not welded on straight from the factory.

Any thoughts??

There's a type of exhaust gasket sealant stuff you can get. It's like a paste you apply to the gasket on either side. I have some on mine. There was some leakage before evident by black sooty deposits near the connection. Haven't checked since putting the paste in. Worth a try though.

Copper RTV maybe? I would try that, a thin layer on both sides of the gasket, let it dry, and hopefully good to go. You can pick it up at any parts store.

I think the copper will handle higher temps than that red, plus the copper is made for exhaust.

Just looked it up, red handles 650oF, copper 700oF...that's not that big of a gain.

Well.... I was right, it does handle higher temps.

But it might not matter either.

thomas_cory2000 11-26-2014 08:30 PM

Anybody know what the approx exhaust gas temps are that far down the exhaust track? I'd honestly imagine no more than 300 to 400oF if that?

Depends on if you are using catalytic converters or not.

Then it would definitely be below 400°F in that area. You can verify with one of those IR thermometers if you're that curious.

I am having the same problems. My exhaust was used when I got it also. To me it looks like my flanges are bowed a little, someone suggested the previous owner torqued the bolts down too tight. Now whether that is true or not I don't know. I bought some of the copper sealant and plan on using it in a couple of days. Hopefully it will do the trick.

I just put the permatax rvf on so we'll wait and see. I did some further research...if this doesn't work, I'm going to buy an "split exhaust flange" and make it my bitch.Attachment 183165

I tried to use a universal 3" donut gasket and it was too big. You'll have to order the UR proprietary gasket on their site to get a proper fit.
