Since you missed dales post the first time. CARB is not about emissions it is about money. They don't give a flying fuck if you pass emissions just that your car is exactly the same as the day it rolled off the end of the line in Hiroshima. Had you posted before hand I would have told you not to even bother going to the ref in that condition. You were 100% going to fail every time for the manifold and boost gauge. Your fucked for real now.

Yatta 05-13-2015 12:57 PM

If you are going to try and fool the ref’s (it is possible, but I don’t recommend it) the parts on the car have to look stock(ish) a gutted secondary catalyst would pass visual and the car should pass smog, a test pipe would fail even though emissions would pass; the the only way I see an XS manifold passing is if you somehow managed to get the stock heat shielding (or something that looks stock) to hide it, shiny parts are a dead give away. Now that you have taken it to the refs and they have noted failure you are proper fucked; a judge might show some mercy but that is what you are relying on. I don’t recall if you can have a ref examine again but taking your manifold out might save you a big headache later.

Awal 05-13-2015 01:18 PM

That sucks bro, but what did you expect? Also, why stock everything out and stop b4 the boost gauge and EM? As Yatta said, anything shiny w/out a proper looking heat shield is definitely gonna be noticed by anyone with any experience with engines.

Considering that these 'refs' do this shit for a living to generate as much revenue as possible for the state, I could see them catching stuff on a used car that an average 'modder' wouldn't even know was there.

Cali sucks for us, even with our 'aircare' up here as long as u passed a cursory mirror check for the main cat, and passed emissions, you could do anything you wanted to your engine.

predapio 05-13-2015 02:07 PM

What part of STOCK THE BITCH OUT didn't the OP understand?

I'm not going to say we told you so but yeah....we did.

STOCK THE BITCH OUT

^ That part

tegxsi 05-13-2015 03:06 PM

If you can't pass visual inspection that is an instant fail. They proceed with other tests just to be thorough and tell you about the other problems the car may have.

If I had to guess that means Because at the end of the day they want your tag/tax revenue. But I read earlier in this thread that since he failed you you are likely going into some "ref only" inspection category. Every year.....

Maybe I misread and I don't really care to read through this Shit again but I doubt you get off that easily.

I remember reading the same, having to get a visual every year = a ton of unnecessary fuckery.

California blows. I had a friend use his parents address here in AZ while he was at Berkeley for school. He was told several times that his car isn't "California friendly", a couple times by cops when stopped for speeding. I'm grateful for how relaxed Arizona is on most things. From cars to guns, Arizona does not give a Fuck nd I prefer things that way. Some call it the wild west but I just look at it as one of the last state to be corrupted by idiots and stripped of simple liberties.

Hey OP stock out 100% and enjoy the stock car or sell it for a faster "stock" car. The GenPu draws to much attention. It was one of the many reasons I sold mine and kept my Speed6 plus fwd isn't nearly as much fun as awd.

I sure hope they don't blacklist the vin. The next owner will be fucked if so.

Awal 05-13-2015 09:50 PM

AZ def FTW for guns, and apparently mods as well. I'd be looking for a AZ addy if I was you, we used a similar non-metro Vancouver addy to say Fuck You to Aircare when it was in place! And Aircare wasn't even that bad compared to Cali, it just cost $48 per test and if you failed emissions they would give you a minimum amount "put X amount [$200-500)" you had to spend at a certified Aircare mechanic, and a lot of people still wouldn't pass the emissions but having a record you spent said amount by a cert AC tech would get you insurance/reggy until the next test. Money grab essentially, just not as bad as Cali has it..

OCspeed 05-13-2015 11:52 PM

Depending on how things go, I might just sell all the mods and rock the stock genpu till

deciding on what car to get next since I don't mind how the car drives stock.

We'll see, time will tell once I go to court. I asked for an extension, so I gotta go June 1st

Awal 05-14-2015 03:06 PM

I wonder if the new Corksport turbo with a gutted OEM DP would get through the refs down there.

Can you run a AP tune (with all CEL boxes checked/working) through a ref inspection (minus the Cobb AP in the car of course)? Or do you need to reflash back to stock to pass?

Koke382 05-14-2015 04:16 PM

Gaaaay. That sucks. My car would deff not pass any cali shit. And I live in oc. Anaheim to be exact. Ive been paying for dirty smogs since i was 19. Lol. Sucks bro but thats how it is here. I also have 5% all around and no front plate.

The San Diego guys have it worse, its like as soon as you hit irvine the cops get ticket crazy lol.

I went to stock mapping and uninstalled my AP. From what I could see from the waiting room as they did a detailed inspection of my car, they were plugging stuff in to the OBD. Maybe to check mapping? I don't know.

steevieg 05-15-2015 10:29 PM

hey, maybe it's more of a reason to trade it in and upgrade to the next speed 3?

if it ever happens to me, that's what i'd do.

Mikee89 05-16-2015 08:58 AM

I have been reading this thread, and California reminds me of European Union so much.

You can get pulled over for inspection for no reason. It is very common and normal in Europe, as there is no law that would prohibit them from doing so. They would check your license, registration, insurance, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, air levels in your tires and thread, signal lights, headlights, etc...

The difference is, that cops in Europe are much nicer and they treat you like a normal person, and not a criminal. They also receive different training, from their American counter-parts. You are also required to have a College degreee, to be a cop in Europe, which explains it.

SaveMelMac 05-16-2015 10:15 AM

Like I said from the beginning, tell court car is undrivable and cannot be taken to ref. pay fine what ever it is and get on with your life. Welcome to California

Actually In the USA police departments are shifting to requiring one or two years of college education.. Of course it wont be universal but its happening

Quote:

Police officer education requirements range from a high school diploma to a college degree. The minimum requirement is usually a high school diploma, although an increasing number of police departments require applicants to complete at least one or two years of college coursework or have an associate’s degree.
Also Europe fairs no better in this requirement

Depending on which country in Europe... They also scam the system and have been busted.. Each country might have its own rules inside Europe even those in the EU are suppose to abide by certain rules

Case in point

Spain’s cops get college degrees in just one year

Quote:

Until last year, hundreds of Spain’s top-ranking police officers were on active duty without having the proper education requirements for their positions, which they reached by working their way up through the system.

Certain high-ranking positions such as chief of police require a doctoral or bachelor’s degree, preferably in engineering, according to the Law on Organization and Functioning of the General State Administration.
Last year hundreds of Spains TOP ranking police officers didn't have the proper education requirements for their positions.. The average policeman wasn't required to have this education only the high ranking ones. So yea it depends on the country/rules/ and who abides by them

Spain?s cops get college degrees in just one year

A good majority of police everywhere are no where near educated 'up to current standards' by any means.. A lot of tickets/etc written everywhere aren't actually enforceable, but people will pay them without fighting or thinking twice, and it makes for a ton of 'grey' area and income for the jurisdiction, and bonuses to the officers always skew things.

That's why if you think you didn't break the law get a lawyer and fight it in court. Usually cheaper than the ticket well around here. If the cop knows he was wrong he wont show up for court and it will be dismissed. Or if he/she is too busy. That being said the overwhelming majority of the time I have dealt with cops they are nice even given me a brea.. That being said I haven't gotten a ticket in almost a decade now I think. However I have been pulled over multiple times since then. Turn signal not orange enough, Crossing the line to go around the cops that had somebody pulled over, etc.. But the cops were pretty cool about it. I think its because of the day most of them occurred were holidays, new years, etc. Just checking for DUIS/etc.. The last stop they just said oh we don't smell anything you can go. Literally that's all the cop said when I rolled down the window. We both laughed. I think also its because the area around here had a spree of car thefts mostly bigger suvs/diesel trucks were being stolen. It stopped after about a month or two though and the cops didn't patrol around here as much. Guess they caught the people or those people stopped committing crime in our area..

Cops have to deal with the same people we deal with everyday.. Road ragers/thugs/etc.. People that break the law and think its ok etc. You have people that think getting a ticket for speeding and not paying it is ok. And that if you end up in jail over that its a debtors prison. LMAO. Seriously though crazy stuff like that. I know if I am doing something wrong and get busted.. Aka if I am speeding etc. I am going to admit it period. If I jaywalk and get a ticket I will take it. This has happened to me once. I got a jaywalking ticket in downtown Dallas And yes I deserved it I didn't cross at the crosswalk.

But yea in the end if you know you didn't do anything wrong then fight it in court not with the cop that pulls you over its pointless. I have had several tickets dismissed back in the day.. Also remember Ignorance of the law isn't an excuse period. And doesn't work in court :)

nicb 05-20-2015 11:23 AM

I don't see how people can stand this. I will be damned the day Kansas tries telling me what mods I can/cannot put on my car. If I want to run on open dump out the fender, by God I'm running the dump out of the fucking fender.

GL man, I know you've heard it enough, but man it sucks to be in Cali with a modded car, especially when all the Harleys and muscle cars go screaming by.

steevieg 05-30-2015 11:37 PM

good luck big homie. i'm sure it'll be fine

thomas_cory2000 05-31-2015 07:57 AM

I didn't read 100% of this thread but did read most of it and yet I still don't understand why u didn't stock out? This also might be a bad time to advise I am in law enforcement & I'm on the road :28: and I will say this...screw the cops whom actually have time to fuck with people whom have modded cars...it's petty IMO. There are way more important things to do as a cop. Modded cars should be at the bottom of the list, if even on the list at all. I could understand if u cut off ur exhaust & straight piped it & sounded like a god damn helicopter from 6 blocks away (Honda ftw lol), someone must have pissed in that cops cheerios that day. Damn me for using common sense and thinking reasonably thou right? Good Luck....because you're really going to need it man!

Love me some sensible LEOs who realize there are much more important things to do than hassle ANY car (as long as it's not a danger mechanically) that has mods on it.

It seems, or feels like a lot of cops/police just spend way to much time worrying about quotas b4 public safety/well being..

kudos to you bro, keep being who you are, and hopefully your attitude will rub off on some of your fellow LEOs.

I've been very lucky in terms of the cops I have had to interact with (I'm not even gonna try to act like I didn't do anything wrong), thanks for being one of those good ones too

This is all so interesting. I live in Los Angeles.

I had never really done any mods to a car prior to my 2010 MS3, other than some glass packs on my first car, an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a 305 V8. Loved that rumble.

So before proceeding I asked a friend at work what he thought. He's got money for big dollar cars and mods all of them. He said he's never had a problem. He's lived here his entire life. Early 40s.

The two cars I specifically know about are a Mercedes SLK (AMG?) that he totally tricked out including custom headers and tune. His current is an Audi A8 with an exhaust that makes the 19k RPM F1 cars sound like a Prius, at least when he gets on it, and also has a custom tune.

So it really just depends on the cop. I know the counties south of LA are bigger bitches about this stuff. Which is funny, because they are politically much more conservative than LA, so you would think they would be more lenient. But then maybe they pick on the foreign cars.

What's even more fucked up about all this stuff is that you can buy this stuff, go to any mechanic and have it installed...but then it's illegal. You'd think the mechanics would be at least partly liable.

I got my windows tinted a few months back and put some light tint on the front windows. The tint guy said it's illegal, but they do it all the time. Seems the state would come down on them for even doing it. The number of cars with front tint in LA are not a small percentage of the total.

Welcome to California, bankrupt land of the liberal hippy douches.

Sorry for not updating in a while, I forgot to lol

So anyways, went to court and talked to the judge. Basically it all got written off as a fine

as a nice $600 ticket that I am paying monthly ($50). FMIC and everything on the intake side of things went in yesterday. Putting back on

the tint in a couple days along with my downpipe and exhaust. Selling my headers and methanol kit
