Now I'm not sure if what the OP got caught with is a traffic violation, but I suppose we all have to be careful when we visit Cali with our cars. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Jesus these laws seem crazy in California. In Pennsylvania, specifically Philadelphia, we do not need a decibel meter to gauge the exhaust sound. If we reasonably believe it's not oem, we can pull you over for it. Our tint statute also does not list a specific percentage. It just states if you cannot see the occupants of the vehicle you are in violation. Now it seems that California officers are allowed to search your engine bay if they have probable cause. An exhaust modification, accessport, etc. are most likely probable cause because they are signs of engine modification. On another note, many people said they will refuse this search because they need a search warrant. Commonwealth V. Gary, which is a supreme court decision meaning it is a standard that must be followed country wide, states that if probable cause exists (in this case, illegal modifications) an officer DOES NOT need a search warrant to search the vehicle. You just picked the wrong State to live in lol. I wouldn't say the cop is an asshole, he is just doing what the law requires. He took an oath to enforce the law and he is payed tax payer money to enforce the law. In my opinion, other than having a strict officer, nothing the officer did was illegal.

Then you have a automatic 2000 civic with cut resonator and an eBay muffler sounding like straight asshole. People that aren't into cars don't really see the difference. Then you get a person with a badge, he categorizes you the same as the numb nut rocking the 50$ exhaust.

I shouldve done it when i bought the car, but i didnt think i was gonna do alot of mods lol. Thankfully the metro Vancouver, BC area got rid of "Aircare" recently, and like Cali, new cars were exempt for a certain period, then had longer testing intervals than pre 2k models. But even when aircare (smog testing on a dyno etc) existed all you needed to do was insure the vehicle outside the metro area and you where good.

So today when I took my car, they did a full visual inspection of the outside of the car, the interior, and the engine bay. Unlucky for me, I left the XS power manifold on the car and forgot to uninstall it. They put my car on a lift and kept going back and forth for about 45 minutes. After some time, 2 of the mechanics come in to the waiting room I was in and start questioning about the manifold, and I just told them that my stock one cracked, having it to be replaced with the xs power. They also questioned my boost gauge and my air fuel gauge. As time goes on, I saw them put my car on the smog roller dyno and test my exhaust dB. Thinking to myself that I PASSED everything, I started to relax a little. The guy comes in and makes me sign 4 different papers, and then says "Your car didn't pass the decibel test, nor the smog test and failed due to the header you have." Thinking to myself that its impossible that I failed being that the only difference between an aftermarket and stock manifold is the design, I start looking at the papers with the results as I head back to my car shocked and see that on the smog papers, it says PASS for all the emission tests that were done. I go over to the side of the page that describes the exhaust decibel test and they recorded my exhaust (stock) to be 81 dB, and they proceeded to check off "Did not pass." Getting slightly pissed, I started questioning them what was the problem with making me not pass the test. They proceeded to tell me that since I have an exhaust header, I failed the "visual" inspection, but passed the emission and functionality inspection. Since I didn't pass the visual, they failed me for both exhaust and for the smog (even when on the papers it clearly says PASS on all the test, which I think is stupid) MY argument is this: who in the world cares about a visual inspection when i'm passing the emission test and the exhaust test. Im not polluting the air, and i'm not making and loud noises with the exhaust that would break the law...so whats the problem? After stating my side of the argument, they told me I can either come back with a stock header, or fight it at court. In conclusion: yea I shouldn't have left the manifold in there, but then again, I have proof I went to the ref and passed all the test. Im just gonna show all the proof in court and state my argument and hope for the best. The ref told me i'm most likely just gonna get a fine and then have it written off.. Total fuckers ![]() EDIT: I forgot that they also put me down at the ref that my boost pressure guage can not have a T fitting from the line that connects to the BOV, making it illegal. He said I have to find "another source" to read boost, but tapping into any of the hoses are "illegal"
