Holy crap, I broke my car.

I figured I’d share this story just because.

So I’ve been working on my front bumper a lot lately. When I originally bought the car, the dealer had painted the lower grill CWP to match the body, along with the wheels. I kind of dug it and got a great deal so I bought it. Flash forward almost two years and I’ve decided to go back to the original look of the black grill. So I order a replacement, have it shipped to work, take it home and 2 weeks later decide to replace it.

Pull the bumper off, pull the grill out, go to put the new one in, and realize it’s for a regular 3. I feel like such an idiot because I never cared to actually unwrap it and just trusted the company to send me the part as advertised (I know, right). The bumper is already off, the grill is already out, so I’m like screw it, I’ll just plasti-dip it for now. I run out to Home Depot in the wife’s car, get the stuff, plasti-dip it, and reinstall. During reinstall, I scraped the edges so it looked like complete crap. Long story short, I ordered a new, correct OEM grill and finally fully replaced it a few weeks later.

You still with me? Okay, so I decided it’s a good time to get tuned by @Lex;. I’ve been sending him third gear logs but on the latest map revision he asks for 2 fourth gear pulls. It’s not easy to do this where I live because city. So I’m nervous but again, I say screw it, let’s do this. First pull, awesome. Let’s try it again. Second pull, I’m around 5500 rpm in fourth (I’ll leave speed to the imagination) and I hear this loud PSHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhh….

Holy crap, I broke my car. My heart’s pounding. I pull over and start checking couplers and anything else that may have come loose under pressure. No problems that I can see, so I’m like what the hell broke? I’m looking around the front of the car and notice my plastic undertray had split and that’s what was making the noise. I guess when I removed the bumper to replace the grill a million times, I was stressing it enough that it gave up at speed.

It could have been much worse, but it scared the shit out of me, so I figured I’d share.

Sorta happened to me as well but with a wheel well liner. I was at the top of fourth doing a log and all of a sudden it just ripped out, spun around the tire a few times then got thrown to the side of the road. Definitely a scary experience haha.

I checked that too while I was looking because I just replaced my wheels and tires and it sounded like it could have been the tire venting to atmosphere.

Wheh, I thought it was going going to end in a ZZB.

If it did, I'd probably not be as quick to share, LOL. Could have been much worse...

OP, so you are saying you don't go WOT in 4th gear regularly? I am guessing you are starting a 91 tune? Things are a lot more interesting when over $100 worth of tools fall off the front end of the car because Daddy chinkus forgot to take them out when the hood was closed. ;)

I left a groan because I was misled, once again, about something that sounded like a ZZB story. :)

LOL, I think if the title was "Holy crap, I broke my undertray", less people would care. And I put a lot of effort into typing it up at work!

Damnit OP this thread is like picking up a hooker and then finding out said hooker is really Bruce Jenner.

edit: glad your car is somewhat ok.

Freaked me out reading this too ... Relieved to see it's relatively minor. I will say this though. If it's not safe to take 4th gear logs in that area either find a place that is or we will stick to 3rd. Last thing I want is someone getting hurt.

That is the weirdest looking albino pu I've seen with the white grill. I'm glad you changed it back to stock and your car wasn't blown up.

Wait you guys actually let daddy chinkus work on your cars? After seeing the shit he did to his own car? Wtf.

Your story was actually pretty entertaining. Nice. Glad it wasn't worse. Definitely find a good road to do the 4th gear log on.

I need to get my license situation sorted out before I can even think of doing logs
