Default How reliable is reliable

Well just curious
Have you ran into any problems that were caused by modding and such? If so what and how much did it cost
Yes I've searched but that's bone stock ms3 not a modded one.

I'm on my third transmission....lol. All work was done under warranty so nothing came out of pocket, other than that the car has been mechanically sound from day one.

The reason I'm on trans 3 is that the first ones second gear synchro broke and when it was rebuilt under warranty, the rebuild was done incorrectly causing it to fail for the second time, they then gave me a new trans and I've been peachy ever since!

a car is only unreliable when you don't take care of it.

I wish this were true, but some cars are just giant pieces of shit from factory as far as reliability goes. IE. dodge transmisions for the longest time were HUGE pieces of shit. That is why for a while there there was a 100k mile warranty on that part of the train.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. This is an intersesting question to me.

I'll say that with a good tune, the ms3 is as reliable as it would be from the factory engine wise (see ms3-ass-sore's transmission woes).

More power on some of the hard parts may be of some concern (i.e. clutch and transmission), but overall our transmission has proven to be able to handle a fully bolted car without issue.

In addition to mods, many of us are into taking proper care of the engine with routine maintenance, valve cleaning, OCC's etc, so I would actually have more confidence in the reliability of a bolted, well tuned, well maintained ms3 with high miles than a stock, not so well maintained ms3 with the factory tune.

truth.

i have 59,015mi on the clock and the car is about as reliable and good-feeling as day one of purchase.
and this is an 07 MS6. besides the 06's, we were pretty much the test dummies.

I haven't had any real mechanical issues with mine.

I just went back to a Mazda from an 08 Infiniti G37 coupe, in which the coupe was the biggest piece I've ever owned from day one. Hence prior to the g37 coupe, I had a Speed 6 for 3 years....so that speaks for itself regarding reliability.

One guy I work with has a G35 for his wife. Dumbest car ever. Nissan/Infinity decided that in 2005, they would do away with oil return holes in the pistons (under the rings) to see what would happen. The result is a high end looking car that has the reliability of a 80's Civic that is on it's third motor swap. Oh, and you can't adjust the analog clock on the dash. Not to mention the constant other moving part problems and the gas mileage.

I had a 350z (which reminds me to add that to the cars you have had thread) with the VQ motor and it had an audible ping from day1. I hated that car just for that reason.

One drive in this car and you can tell it was meant to be driven very hard. Everything is meaty and actuates with firmness. This is not just a Mazda3 with a big motor, trust me on that. The MS3 was thought through piece by piece. Did you know, for example, that we even get heavier-duty axles than regular Mazda3s get? I have no reservations when I beat on this car which is daily. As long as you don't go crazy with some tune, or fail to keep the fuel flowing, you'll get many happy miles of soul-soothing driving like an ass.

Tune: My own (based on the v210 and v231 Cobb OTS maps but ramped way up)

Street creds:
- Fastest known K04/93 MS3/driver with only an AP, CDFP upgrade, intake, and tune | 13.37@106.83mph on stock Dunlops (2.04 sec 60' time, full curb weight, 75*F ambient temp)
- Has gone an indicated 146mph on three occasions now.

Yes I will help you tune your K04/pump gas car; I have much less experience than the major players but I also charge you $0 and can turn you around quickly. 4 satisfied customers and counting...

Truth. Hell, our factory rear sway bar makes my buddy's nuespeed on his GTI look like a bitch stick. The car was meant to perform.

Mostly hard miles and cross country miles but im at 46k miles now and no issues really besides slight fp drops but thats tince full dp, hpfp internals. Not sure what the issue is but will find out in December when im back.

I remember reading somewhere that Mazda engineers were asked how many hard launches the clutch and transmission would be able to handle and they said 1,000. The writer thought they were joking and asked again and they replied again 1,000. The car is that over built.

I beat on my car harder than Bobby beat Whitney, and the only part that I've ever had fail was my MAP sensor.

Clutches are wear items just like brakes. They don't count.

I let a friend drive my car several times and on two separate instances shifted from 6k rpms in 3rd back into 2nd. What's that 9k rpms? Granted it was brief. We both felt and heard engine hit firewall. It's been a month since and no issues. I figure if its gonna pop it will in the next month or two. Like a valve spring or some shit. But I not worried. I really think these cars are tough as nails (most cars would not survive multiple revs to 2k above redline I would imagine).

I don't get it. He drives a 2005 Grand Cherokee Hemi which is decently fast enough. So like I said a month later I let him drive it again cuz he begged and he fucking overrevved it again. The true question is, is the third time the charm (that he shifts properly or that the valves float and cause perm damage) ?

Another thing might be that he's always been one of these small block chevy every fucking thing guys. Now we all know Ed Cole's small-block introduced in 1955 is a masterpiece but cmon there are other ways of making hp. So the turbo whistle, dump valve, and 6 speed manual are all things you usually don't get in a small block chevy based car and he finds it so fucking alluring. Well, so do I but I've never overrevved shit.

First time should have been it. Nobody who actually drives a standard transmission downshifts at 6000 unless its a rotary or a crotch rocket.

I've never had any problems with the car. I did my first track event when it had 1200 miles and have never looked back. I drive about 80 miles per day and attend at least 4 track events and 10+ autox's a year.

had my friends drag radials on and was doing hard hard launches at the track trying to get some good times. Broke the VCTS system in the intake manifold but simply took it off, gutted the system and cleared the code with my AP, car drives just fine and same as most other peoples problems it was my own fault. 37k miles and thats the only thing to go wrong. Been modding since 4k... fuck warranty haha

Yep I was fully bolted before I hit 3K miles. I also had 5 track passes and 5 auto-x runs before 3500.

The reason I'm on trans 3 is that the first ones second gear synchro broke and when it was rebuilt under warranty, the rebuild was done incorrectly causing it to fail for the second time, they then gave me a new trans and I've been peachy ever since!
Funny you say that. My 2nd gear likes to crunch itself randomly, especially if i shift while making a turn. Is that cause of the stock RMM or is the tranny fucked?
