this car has had its share of factory fluke trannies, but as i have posted before, i swapped the factory fill out at 15k miles for oem mazda fluid and it cleared up my issues. i have the motorcraft fluid in my miata and it works well also.

at the very least, try the oem fluid. if it doesnt correct or improve your issues, you cant still go to the dealer and wont be told you used the wrong fluid.

I could definitely see how the hundreds of people in all of the Mazda forums and I'm sure the thousands of people who aren't members of any forums who have this same problem all must have a fail driver mod. Makes complete sense to me.
I retract my op with your enlightening response.

I just switched to the ford fluid tonight, i wasnt having any issues with the transmission but i hit 30k miles and thought that it would be a good time to change it while i was changing the oil.

After changing the fluid i pulled out of my driveway and knew as soon as i shifted to second that i had made the right choice, everything was better and i didnt thing anything was bad.

My advice for you is to take the following steps to remedy your problem

1. Adjust the shifter linkage...it costs nothing but time, you could have accomplished this already in the time you have spent in this thread.

2. Change the fluid everyone is not exagerating when they say this is the best thing you can do for the tranny... its $60 for 3 quarts, pretty cheap in my book.

3. I dont know what your mods are but a rear motor mount will help a ton as well.

When you go to change the fluid (which i would do even if tuning the shifter helps) you will need the following things.
24mm socket
funnel with a long skinny pourer.

If you have an SRI take the filter off to fill the oil. the drain is behind the plastic undertray you should be able to leave the tray on. when you take out the drain plug it will spray all over the control arm so dont take the plug out all of the way, loosen it and let it drain slowly (ask me how i know)

I had the occasional high rpm 5th gear grind, i was attributing it to driver error, I can update you with the results of changing the fluid. it is going to be a couple days though, i am on cords on two tires and dont see the need to travel at highway speeds until that is addressd.

Gotta go get the fluid this week, and the parts needed to change it. I'll search up the link for the howto, I'm sure it's here sometime.
No time to change fluid now, have 3 new models starting this week, 2 custom videos, and a photo shoot.

I'm curious as to how tuning the shifter would help in this situation? I think he is referring to the problem of getting a grind from 2-3 under hard acceleration or WOT. My 2-3 shift when the car is off is just fine. It's when WOT it grinds.

Yeah I agree. Go fuck yourself. (respectfully of course) hundreds and thousands of MS3 people can't be wrong. Our transmissions are work horses power wise but our synchros are complete horse shit. Dot deny this fact. Just embrace it so you don't look stupid.

It's a shifter tuning problem.

They don't have a little old Japanese man at the end I the line that tunes every single car that comes of the line.
They bang them together and send them out.
This problem has been well documented, and there is a solution.
It involves not being lazy fuck, and getting your hands dirty.

If you DON'T tune your shifter, eventually you WILL have a syncro issue.
Not the cause of the problem, but the result.

Let me sidetrack this thread for a moment and invite you all to stop talking about shifting and gears and synchros and instead enjoy some new fetish pr0n.
I'm updating my vimeo channel now, and also my youtube channel.
I won't post links, since it's NSFW but google search "vimeo seductive studios" or "youtube seductive studios"
After you've all relaxed, then you can come flame me again.
And this is why I have no time for fluid and syncros, and shifters.

I understand that the shifter CAN be the problem but how do you explain it being buttery smooth when the car is off but the minute you go WOT you get a 2-3 grind? THAT tells me it's a fluid problem.

I see most of the cars on here are MS3, would this transmission fluid change be good for the MS6 too? Thanks

Not trying to be a douche lol but dude you can have a completely shot gear and it'll still go in like butter with the car off. Better test would be car running, then put the clutch in, and go to whichever gear grinds. If it goes in rough/doesnt/grinds then you know its a synchro issue. If its only WOT its likely fluid/shifter tuning.

I get a grind in second, always when it's cold, sometimes when it's warm. I just shift slow when it's cold. My third gear moves once in a great while - as in it's just not in the same place and I have to go farther to the right. I imagine a TMM could help this. The Ford fluid helped the 3rd issue but not the 2nd grind.

Still, compared to the nightmare that was my RSX-S tranny, this one just has... character. No big deal.

This is what I am saying. The OP as well as I said the grind is under mild to WOT acceleration and when I said this is a fluid issue I get corrected and told its not the fluid it's the shifter that needs to be adjusted, and that is wrong. Under low speeds and easy shifting my car has NEVER missed a shift.

That and if it still doesn't help spend some money on TWM shifter. I talked to these guys lately and they say it solved the grinding. This is what I'm getting in the near futur TWM full replacement.

I changed the fluids, tuned the shifter and it helped a lot. Search for How too and do it!

The shifter is on crapy rubber bushings, when I tuned my shifter I played a bit with the assembly and it moves around. The bushings are tall and soft, Mazda must have put them there to remove the engine vibs thought the shifter but they suck!

After seeing what it does when going in to 2-3 well the shifter assembly moves forward a bit...more a tipping toward the front. By not very much but it does moves around, this can't be really good.

I didn't think of buying replacement bushing at the moment I tryed to fix the adjustment of the cable but I should have.
