I screwed up and got F***ed LOL

Lesson learned and I'm not really complaining. Basically, it's a cautionary tale...

2010 Speed 3 started bucking/hesitating on the way to work yesterday (about 1 hour from my house and tools).

I nursed it to Gateway Tire in Franklin, TN. While it was there I wanted to go ahead and get an oil change and filter. I NORMALLY buy my own oil & filter and take them with me but in this case I didn't. Now, this is a reputable shop in the Franklin area (or so I thought).

First Issue:
The tech calls me a few hours later and tells me the MAF sensor needs cleaning and "offers" to clean it for me for $200. Is he crazy? I told him no, I would take care of it and just do the oil & filter change (Rotella T6 plus Mobil-1 M1-209 filter).

Second Issue:
So, I go pick up my car and there is an $88 charge for troubleshooting/vacuum test/smoke test.

Total bill was $222.87. Minus the troubleshooting charge, it cost me $126.73 for oil change plus filter! I felt like such an idiot and will be sure to never let a shop charge me for their oil and filter prices again. I'm such a dumbass sometimes but had no idea they would charge me $42.00 per gallon of Rotella oil plus $20.00 for a filter. Damn.

My friend paid $300 for that at a Toyota dealership. The sensor got dirty and the ECU decided to go into limp mode. $300 later, she's got a running car again. I wish I knew that Toyotas did that because I had some MAF cleaner at the house.

valkyr 04-22-2014 08:53 AM

@speed23; Yeah, thankfully I knew the MAF sensor was a simple thing to do, otherwise I'd have probably authorized that too if I didn't know where (and what) it was.

JgamB 04-22-2014 09:17 AM

Lol... a new MAF sensor is $88 from Rock Auto.

ABOSWORTH 04-22-2014 09:18 AM

Looks like they went to Autozone and bought the shit and then charged you double for it. LOL

Cock suckers. You should rightfully get the leftover 2 quarts of the T6. You should just change the oil yourself man. I use Rotella T6 as well and it's expensive enough without having to pay someone to do it for you. I always enjoy the oil change where I still have leftover half gallon from the previous and I only have to pay for one gallon. LOL

Did you need them to diagnose that it was a problem with the MAF sensor or did you already know why it was bucking?

Anyway, hope your car is running well again. Lesson learned. The weather is nice again so there is no need to pay someone to change your oil.

Honestly, I thought the fuel pump had gone belly up but it seems to be corrected after cleaning the MAF sensor. Also, I didn't know until yesterday that the MAF required regular cleaning. That's now on my list of things to do under regular maintenance.

I pay someone to change my oil because I live in a subdivision and don't have a good work area other than the driveway and I don't want to get spilled oil on my drive. I don't mind paying someone to do it when I buy my own products. I do mind when I have to pay them for the products though! :)

I see. Are you still on the stock internals?

On a nice sunny day, a driveway is ideal for changing oil. You could always put a big piece of cardboard down so you don't spill. Just saying. ;)

valkyr 04-22-2014 09:34 AM

That's a good point about the cardboard. Hadn't considered that.

Yep, still stock on everything really. Is it recommended to do the High pressure internals if stock on everything?

I'd like to do some mods, but have 3 teenagers and most excess funds go to things they're doing/involved in at the moment.

You should be good on the stock internals if you plan to stay stock.

when I opened up the thread and began reading I thought something had happened to your car...well this wasn't so bad x_x , but lesson learned ha

Playaj 04-22-2014 11:17 AM

I've never been to a place that doesn't have you sign an estimate of what they should be charging

They went in dry, no lube, lol.

[R]usty 04-22-2014 11:25 AM

Well look at that they gave you a free tire rotation. That makes up for it.

technically they DID change his oil...... so....... ;P

Yeaaaaaah that's why I spend the $5 an hour for a lift here on base and do my own shit. No one has ever touched my car except to put new tires on.
