Icon Question on Dashboard

1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys,

I recently noticed an icon come on for a split second as I start my car. Again, it only shows up for a second so it's not an issue but I wanted to know what it means.

Also... recently when I brake suddenly, my e-brake light has been briefly coming on. Does that mean my brakes are going bad and the e-brake is coming in to rescue? Car has 55,000 so maybe new brakes are due?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks dudes!

That looks like a car and a gas cap?

The brake light is coming one either because you are low on brake fluid or your brake pads are worn completely out. At 55k miles your front pads are most likely toast.

And no, your "e-brake" is not coming in to help you. If that light is coming on, especially under hard braking, the problem needs to be resolved ASAP.

Looks like the missing bolt indicator light to me...hopefully nothing falls off your car...

I figured as much. I'll get the brakes looked at asap.

Regarding the light, like I said, it came on a few days ago for a split second as the car was starting but is no longer coming on, so I won't worry about it.

Thanks for your advice people.

Did your car come with a manual? If so, you can look up that indicator light in the manual.

Quick search came up with this:

http://www.diagnostic-world.com/_fam...45101.6868.jpg"Mazda 3 fuel cap warning light - indicates that the fuel cap has not been closed correctly. Please check your fuel cap."

Yes it did - I just couldn't find it.

Awesome, thanks! I had no idea how to word this to search for it.

Check your brake fluid level before you go driving again, please, for the speed and everyone else on the road.

Yup, that's the first thing I did - top it off.

I think my pads are about due.

I just called 4 places here locally for a brake pad replacement and it runs between $150-200 for labor and the pads. Not too bad but what bugs me is that they'll probably just install generic ceramic brakes but I want to buy my own that will probably be 10x better than theirs. Of course none of the shops allow that, not even Midas...

And I don't have the patience/knowledge/time to do it on my own.

Gas cap light coming on while starting is normal, showing the light functions properly.
It's only a problem if it remains illuminated.

Replacing brake pads really isn't that difficult. There are several YouTube videos out there which do a great job showing you how to do the job step by step.

The first time I worked on mine, I was a little hesitant because it was new territory to me as well. The money you will save doing it yourself is well worth the time and effort and is a great learning and confidence boosting event.

Hang in there and just go for it!

Also check the seal in the cap.
