JBR short shifter well I got my short shifter and weight today from EDGEAUTOsports (thanks for the plastic egg with a robin egg inside by the way). I began to read the installations prior to me receiving the parts and realized that I need rubber grommets because I'm still using the factory air box. Looked into home depot and they got sum for about a 1.07 but only a 3/8 size, not the 1/4 that the instructions recommend, although I'm sure I can still make it happen. Anyhow I was using this forums wonderful search bar to see if anyone has installed this without the grommets and have had no problems, but I came up short. I figure if JBR says you need em....Ill need em! I'm in no rush to slap this sucker on so I'll wait till I get a SRI cause I only want to remove the fac. air box once. Guess Ill settle with installing the shifter bushings for now. If anyone has any insight about the possibility of installing shifter kit w/out grommets, please chime in, TOOOOOOOODLLLEESSSSSS!!! |
I installed the shifter bushings and the shifter plate from JBR. I used the bushings from the shifter bushings on the factory airbox. you definitely need to have the bushings installed to move to factory airbox up so where the shifter cable connects to the shifter plate does not hit it. I did not have the airbox high enough and the shifter would not stay in 5th because it was hitting. I was able to make a little adjustment and now it works great. |
cool thanx mang. thatll work great since ill put the shifter bushings in first anyways. ill let ya know if I had success with it as you did. |
How did the install go? |
Good. U need surgeon hands to pull and install the front left bushing but it was all good. Didnt take out the center console either. Installed shift weight and plate also. I used the rubber shifter bushings on the air box and that worked. I nees to find a longer 10mm bolt to replace the one that attaches the air box to rad. support and ill put another shifter bushing in between that other wise box "teeter totters" bcus of higher stance. Issue im having is wen im in "spirited driving" mode i can feel and hear gears slightly grinding. I dnt know if this is a characteristic of a short shifter or due to the fact that i set it in tje shortest throw possible. Im gonna lengthen the throw and see if that helps. Any suggestions? As far as the feel, ive never driven a veh. w a short throw so its all new to me. Thnx for ur input |
I didn't notice anything like that. When I had my problem I contacted Jamie at JBR. He was very quick to respond and was very helpful. |
Check Jamie's video on how to adjust the cable. Should fix you right up. |
+1 on shifter cable adjustment. I've had to do that a few times |
someone should link that video so OP can find it also me:slomo: |
There's this handy thing called search.. |
yessir I found that vid on their web page under support. I had emailed them earlier to get their input and they advised me to slow down my shifting. ill post this verbatim... "One of the positive side effect of the short shift plate is it increase the speed of the shifter. So when you increase the speed you shift, it's actually like doubling the speed of the shift linkage. Slow your shifting down a week bit and you shouldn't grind. Also the GEN 2 doesn't always like the full 40% reduction in throw. Try slowing your shifting down first and then if need be back off the throw a bit and I think you'll be good to go. Hope this helps." I set the throw halfway instead of all the way to the shortest throw position and it pretty much eliminated the grind. So, I don't believe I have to adjust my cable, but it wouldn't hurt I suppose. I did prefer the much shorter throw so maybe wen I get a SRI ill re adjust then so I dnt have to deal with the fac air box. I don't drive on the track or like im on the track in the street, so maybe it wont be so bad slowing down my shift. the dilemma would be if in the long run I burn out my synchros or something from excessive grinding over the years and there goes my warranty. or should I say, it already went! thanx for everyones input |
Christ...I can't read this. How old are you, and where is your return key? Er...your you seem to hit the carriage return at weird times... |
