I checked out the Focus ST RMM from JBR. See the picture in step #3 of the installation instructions that I attached. Just as I suspected, it looks like the stock RMM bottoms out in the metal cavity where it sits in the subframe. This is the SAME exact cause of the 1-2 shift "clunk" that occurs in the MS3. I can assure you that the turbo, down pipe, and/or engine hitting the firewall are not the cause of the noise.

This is exactly my point. What the hell does disconnecting the RMM prove? I am not saying the stock one does nothing and we might as well remove it. I am saying it doesn't do enough, but it does help. That's what makes you sound retarded. And the little movement you get is NOTHING compared to what the car can and will do when high loads and torque is applied. So quit comparing the two like your arms are some sort of scientific measuring device.

I think it might be a weak stock RMM.

Go jack up your car, get underneath, and remove your RMM completely. Rotate the engine fully forward and fully backward. Notice how nothing makes contact with the firewall?

The noise most people hear when they shift hard on the stock RMM is the metal portion of the RMM bottoming out on the subframe when the bushing allows excessive travel. If the RMM is removed, the transmission adapter bracket it attaches to will hit the steering rack LONG before the turbo or down pipe decides to share space with the firewall.

Do you dopes really think that Mazda would have designed the engine bay and mounts to ALLOW the engine to contact the firewall?

I was just going to say this is impossible as well but you beat me too it!

The 1-2 dunk/clunk noise on the 1-2 shift(non agressive driving) is the passenger side axle if you look at my thread i started.

I'm pretty sure we can throw axle out because that's referring to the noise made during non-aggressive 1-2 shifts. The OP dumped the clutch trying to spin the tires. I know the solution is just get an aftermarket RMM but I am kinda curious as to what is actually making the noise, subframe or firewall.

@IWannaGoFast
@duappleganger

This video from CorkSport illustrates exactly what causes the noise, and why the RMM should be the first thing everyone replaces.

Uh.. That noise isn't a loud bang... Itsa rattle.

The engine moves quite a bit to the firewall doesn't it? The engine moves a shit ton without mounts, it is hitting the firewall when pushed too hard. Look at the crappy video.

#1 to see what happens when the OP shifts gears.

When the torque load from the engine increases dramatically, such as during a hard shift, the force of that impact between the RMM and subframe causes a substantial "bang" that could not be mistaken for rattle.

The engine DOES move quite a bit towards the firewall, but those videos don't show you what's happening behind the engine. Believe me, nothing is hitting the firewall. If I have time today I'll snap some pictures with the RMM removed and the engine moved to maximum deflection in each direction so you can see that the turbo and down pipe are not in danger of contacting anything.

Again you will move the engine with your massive scientific measuring devices (muscles) and show us all the exact lb/ft of torque it will take to move the engine. What you don't realize is that even with the RMM removed and the other 2 in place, you alone will still not be able to move the engine nearly as much as what the torque of the car easily can. Someone get superman here some kryptonite before he starts ripping engines out with his muscles. This conversation is so fucking dumb. Someone please close this @Raider
