We Hear: Next-Gen Mazdaspeed3 Could Benefit From AWD - Motor Trend WOT

This is just a rumor....but I might be having trouble keeping it in my pants at the thought of this.

I've been getting a slew of Mazda and independent surveys regarding my vehicle purchase, and I fill them all out. I'm always tagging the Turbo / AWD options for my wants and bashing the FRS/BRZ/Si for their lack of power.

I hope the marketing guys are reading this and seeing the reactions to people driving underpowered pseudo-sports cars with NA 4 cyls.

My biggest concern for Mazda is if the RX-7 is making a return, the younger sibling might fall victim to the Fiero/Camaro vs Corvette performance conundrum. You can't have your flagship product challenged by the econobox on steroids for half the price.

Absolutely agree. I feel a NA Mazdaspeed would piss off this entire community; the whole point of the car is that it can make such insane power for the little cost!

Though, the RX-7 is in a different class. It's a RWD rotory = FRS/BRZ competitor.

I think the reason the AWD in the speed3 was out of question last time was in terms of cost; they wanted to give the most power for the least amount of money. It's pretty awesome when your car costs less initially and comes with more standard features and nicer basically everything than the same cars for more money in the same power range. Mazda has also always been known for value in their vehicles, so I think this was a big point for them.

AWD because the MS6 is so bulletproof, tunable and reliable.

Forget the STi/EVO. Focus on the Focus. That's Mazda's competitor these days. Also, FWIW, my 20+ year old RX-7 is much quicker than my friends brand new FR-S. I think the RX-7, IF they made one, would be aimed a little higher. GTR/LFA maybe.

One of our Nator AL guys has a brother with a '13 FRS. Piggyback ECU, intake, full exhaust - he was completely pissed off when he put down 168/138 on the same dyno in my sig last Saturday. If that is what we have to look forward to with the next generation of "Speed" 3's, Mazda can keep them.

I'd take a speed6 over a speed3 any day of the week...Very little weight penalty for a better suspension, and the awd system does its job really well. It's no less tunable than the MS3...No less reliable than my MS3...I guess the only reason to get an MS3 is to have a hatch?

This. If someone wants AWD they'll get a subaru. Mazda's not going to try to compete with it. Right now a mazda3 is like a luxury car compared to the impreza.

I think you are wrong. Go to the Mazda site. Configure a cx5 and look at how much it costs to add awd. I believe its around 2k. That car has the same chassis as the new Mazda 3. Mazda could make an awd speed well under the price point of a sti or evo. Hell I think they could bring it to market around the same price as the focus st.

A awd speed 3 at the price point of an ST would dominate both the hot hatch and awd sports sedan segments

I can tell you for certain, Mazda USA is fucking up by not bringing a 6 speed skyactive diesel wagon GT to the USA. MS3 is dead, nothing to migrate to for the hatch/wagon fans. They are racing the diesel, so modding/tuning is there. Can you image dusting some ricer civic while emitting hardly any noise? silent, but deadly. Like my farts.

I would love a speed 6 with that diesel race motor or something close to it. If the next speed comes as awd I don't really car if its a hatch or sedan it will be my next purchase

I tend to agree that an N/A motor wouldn't fit the Mazdaspeed legacy - especially when you consider that the Mazdaspeed Protoge and Mazdaspeed Miata were both turbocharged.

Then again, a high revving lightweight AWD model would be unique!

Useless Knowledge: FC RX-7's also buzzed at redline as a shift warning, and I swear it's the same buzzer that's in the game "Taboo." The original RX-7's may have had one as well - Mazda thought the rotary was so smooth that drivers needed a shift warning to prevent over-revving.
