(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score My situation is married, 3 kids. We have an SUV for the main family car. I used to have a toy car - my roadster... due to $$ issues, had to sell it. when I still had teh roadster, the RL was fine for me.. it was a comfy/reliable commuter, and it was big, so we could use either the wife's SUV or my car to haul the kids around. Once I sold my sports car.. I went into "fun car withdrawl" - and now I hate my RL. it's pretty m uch stock.. there are ethings I could do to it.. springs, upsized wheels/tires.. but honstly, it's a luxury car and nothign i do to it will change it's nature. It is a very nice hadnling car, given that it has Acura's SH-AWD system. it will fla tout rip through one turn with the AWD system.. for a 4000 lb car, it will take a turn very very fast. but it's so softly sprung and so heavy,, that once you throw a couple turns at it.. it is a pig. for a luxury car it's sporty. but it's just not fun to drive. so I"m considering other cars to replace it with that woudl have the utility to function as a second car in a household of 5 people...and be fun too. My budget is high 20s. so i could probalby pick up a brand new MS3 and be on budget. i've also considered a few other cars that are sporty 5 seaters that I could get used/CPO in the high 20s. Options are a 335i, ,AWD TL, or an 07-08 TL Type S, G35/G37. My goal is to have a car that is very reliable. I plan to own it 5-6 years and then hand it down to my son, who is 10 now. when he turns 16 he is going to need a car. I want it to be under warranty while I am paying on it.. 60 month loan..so that i'm not getting hit with car payments AND repair bill. I'd love to be able to do minor mods as well. I've modified virtually every car i've ever owned to some degree... some extensively. At my point in life and with my other obligations - i will NOT be doing thosuands and tousands of dollars in mods. whatever I buy.. I could see myself doing basic stuff like, chip, intake, lowering springs (not $$ coilovers), tint, and that's about it. nothing drastic and nothign that is going to ruin my warranty. i want somethign that will make it 5-6 years on an extended warranty and not break the bank with repairs. I"ve always liked Mazdas. My first car was a first gen RX7, and in college I had a miata, then later a turbo RX7. I test drove a couple RX8s back in 2008 and loved them.. I almost bought one but I need a car that will hold 3 kidsd in back..and the RX8 is only a 4 seater. My current car, the RL is pretty big. it holds the whole family easily, but like I said, it's boring. I haven't been inside an MS3 so no idea if it is "somewhat" smalller than my car or TONS smaller.. would three kids fit in teh back of it? i have one kid in a car seat. My RL is similar in size to an Accord. is a MS3 similar in size to a 3 series or smaller in terms of rear seat legroom / and overall width? i can live with it being "crowded" as it's not going to be the main familyhc ar.. but it can't be so small that people would be miserable back there. i'd like to be able to take the while familhy in my car for roadtrips that woudl ber 1-2 hours each way... if they are squished like sardines taht's not going to work. how is the hadnling on the MS3? i used to have a miata. and loved the RX8s i drove. is the hadnling on an MS3 anywhere near that of a miata or rx8? to me, having some power is fun, but I'd really like something with great steering, turn in, and crisp handling. My Acura has none of that. ithandles pretty well b/c of the AWD..but it never makes you feel like youre having fun. the RX8 I drove, while not exactly a "fast" car..was one of the most fun cars I have ever driven... and I've driven some nice cars... i'll have to check one out and see if it works for myneeds, but thought i'd get some input from you guys here. I know the MS3 is more a young guys car, so i bet most of you have no kids, but i'm sure ther are a handful of dads on this forum! I'm not having a midlife crisis.... but i just want something fun to drive. life is short..and I've always loved driving.. i'm looking for something that can double as a second family car, and a fun car to blast to work in.. thanks. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I wouldnt recommend the BMW. I have a 328 but did a lot of research on the 335 and you'll definitely be above your budget. My friend has the 335xi coupe and the car is great but it just doesnt have the "fun" feeling like I had with my 02 WRX. The 335 isnt the most reliable either. When your son has it the repair costs are going to be very pricey. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I would say the MS3 is probably something you could end up owning. It's right in your price range. It's fun to drive, and it's reliable. I've never really driven a Miata or an RX8 but I think the MS3 handles very well. As for the room for 3 kids thing, I would say that's something you'll just have to try out and see if it works... Overall one reason I bought the MS3 is because I saw it as a good mix of everything. It can be a 'racecar', it can be a grocery getter, it can be a people hauler. As long as you don't mind dealing with a 6 speed while dealing with 3 kids in the back seat...I say go for it. Providing they all fit in the back seat...

| Not Ranked : 0 score Why not go to a dealer, check out a MS3, and ask to demo it overnight? Take the family out for dinner, and see how it works for you. The only issue will probably be the car seat.

| Neutral : +1 score Get it!! I'm sorta in the same boat, got an Suv for family stuff (got 2 kids) and the ms3 does the job for me. It's fast, handles well stock, but it gets really fun once u start getting some mods and an accessport!! Did I mention accessport?! Lol. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I have two kids(both in carseats) and one on the way. There is still room in the middle for a third if need be. Also one of them will be going into a booster soon which will give me more room. Best bang for the buck by far. Both my kids love riding in it and always yell "go faster daddy". Lots of fun!! SUV for main family car also. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score FUCK YOUR HONDUH NIGGUH! I can't believe I was the first to say that. Anyway get one! But I don't know about passing it to your son as a first car, it has torque steer & an inexperienced driver might not be able to handle it. If you get it, before you pass it to him you need to upgrade all the motor mounts to lessen the torque steer.

| Not Ranked : 0 score It has been the perfect dd/race car/family car for me. I drove it 100 miles a day to work, haul the wife, two kids and a 90lb boxer to the dog parks and such on Saturdays and then me and my wife take it autoxing on Sundays. After 83000 miles in two years our whole family loves this car. The mommymobile stays in the driveway a lot. So much in fact the wife has already been looking to get her own speed3.

| Not Ranked : 0 score We're a family of four, and we love the MS3. I'd say that you could live with the car seat in the MS3 since you won't exclusively use it for the family hauler. Get an alignment immediately as the OEM alignment will usually shred your tires. Get an intake, rear motor mount, Access Port tuner, springs+rear camber arms, and switch oil and trans fluid to full synthetics. All that stuff will make a good difference, and make it even more fun for fairly cheap.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I'm 45, and I have a wife and 3 kids. We all fit in it and sometimes actually go out in it. I love the goddamn car, it's modded and gives me a smile every fucking day. Buy it and you won't regret it. Now buy it, and mod that bitch............................... EDIT, I've had two G35's, this car is definitely more fun.

| Not Ranked : 0 score It is a fun car for a family going to be tight with 5 though. I have a family of 4 and it replaced a lame as camry. We sometimes haul one of the kids friends which makes five and it is tight in back. We do long weekend trips in it with four of us an it is perfect, bags and all. I do find myself doing all the driving with it VS the camry I would grab drink and let wifey drive. Good luck OP.........................

| Not Ranked : 0 score I'm in a similar situation, with the wife driving the family SUV. I'm 42, have two kids and a third on the way. Even the 20-month-old (in car seat behind driver) can kick the seat when I'm in a comfortable position. That's barely adequate foot room for the back seat passengers. Three people in the back is doable if they're all kids - adults wouldn't be thrilled. My wife keeps telling me it's impractical, but it really isn't - it will fit the three kids when I pick them up from school, plus groceries, while any family trips will always be in the SUV. I personally would not give a 16-year-old a 300hp car, unless he'd taken a professional driving course like Skip Barber (that will be the 16th birthday gift to each of them), maybe not even then. Too tempting to use the power and not enough experience to know when to cool it. Overall I'm very happy with it, and would buy it again. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Everything about your plan is similar to my scenario.... except no-way is this car going to the kid when she turns 16. Too much car... for a new driver. imho. Now, since I'm in nearly the same scenario... no way would I let a five year later decision to give the car to my kid keep me from owning one. Too much fun. I'll deal with the kids car when she has her liscense....

For now my kids fit just fine in it however, when they get bigger it won't be so comfortable for them....... But by then my car will mainly be just for me

| Not Ranked : 0 score @Kellerspeed3 Nah, you're good. Switch to synth oil on your next oil change, and at about 30k change the trans fluid. If you're having troubles with grabbing gears, you can go ahead and change trans fluid and it will help that some. If not, just do it at 30K on the normal service schedule. I use Redline MTL, which is 70w-80, in the MS3 as that's the recommended weight for the gen 2. I use RL MT-90 in the MS6 because that's recommended for it and the gen 1 MS3. Many people also use Ford MC synthetic manual trans fluid, but either that or the RL come highly recommended by most everyone on this forum. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I had an untimely 2nd gear death about 5K miles into my MS3, so I switched it when the warranty work was done. The shifter feel was much smoother afterward, but it does take a little more time to warm up in the cold. If you change it yourself, I'd recommend trying to get the trans level when filling so that the level is precise. When I changed my trans fluid myself at 30K, I did this, and it's seemed to be better when cold since then. I'm wondering if the fluid level was a little off when they did it at the dealer. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score The transmission seems to take just under 3 quarts, I went with XT-m5-QS. Feels similar to stock when cold, but is better when warmed up. Some LSD whining noise when turning hard at slow speeds and cold, but it doesn't bother me if it's just noise. The stock 75w-80 is a dino oil according to a Master tech I asked.

| Not Ranked : 0 score married father of three reporting in. i was in a similar situation - i wanted the most hp/$ i could budget for a new car, but it needed to fit three kiddies and make family road trips if necessary. i test-drove CPO'd sti's and evo's, but couldnt bring myself to pull the trigger on a used car that most certainly got the piss beat out of it. the car is a hoot to drive once you get comfortable with the behavior of the turbo (my first turbo car) and the accompanying torque steer when you get on it on imperfect roads or when the wheel isnt pointed straight. the subtleties on the ms3 are well documented here (no WOT below 2500-3000, etc). three smallish children, with or without car seats, fit with little issue. i could see leg room becoming an issue once you get much taller than about 5ft, but it's no better or worse than other sedans/hatches in that compact category. the ms3s have mediocre aftermarket support, but the mod path is pretty well-defined, and the short list of parts really make the car fun. a reliable 300whp is within reach on stock turbo with bolt on parts and a custom tune, and will be faster (from a roll) than 90% of the cars you'll encounter on a regular day. lastly, the ms3s are few and far between on the road - hell, i've seen way more or that stupid fiat, and gtis are a dime a dozen. i like that few people even know what my car is. sold yet?

| Not Ranked : 0 score I went from an 04 Acura TL 6 speed to my 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 and didn't regret it a bit. You can get one well under your high 20s budget, like $22,000 or so. Like everyone said, intake, AP, fuel pump internals, test pipe will run you about $1200 and turn it into a completely different car.

| Not Ranked : 0 score OP, Married with 2 kids one is 2yr, and other is 11... Car seat is in the middle so he can dangle his legs. I am 5'11 with long legs so the seat is almost all the way back. I was looking at the WRX, and GTI.. Out of all 3 this had the most for the price. I went with the Tech package and so glad I did. This is my DD everywhere when my wife is gone. We also have a 2008 Dodge charger that is the main family car (5.7L hemi) not that V6 POS. This car fits all of just fine. Price was right on to. Grab this car. It is so much fun to drive. It has power when you need it, and you can drive it like a grandma and have it be pretty forgiving as well. I just hit 1100 miles. It's secretly fast to. Had a stage 2 2002 Subu WRX get his feelings hurt, as well as a slowbalt SS with a CAI. I have been averaging 31 on the HW 6th gear at 65 with cruise set. About 24-26 city.. This is grandpa driving This is what I love about it.But as a few others have said.. Go to the deal and take it overnight. I think you will be more then happy with it. Jason

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score just test drove one today. a brand new 2012 model, base. my first impression was that it felt nice. I like how it looks. I think this newer one 2010+ looks better than the first gen. I liked the feel of the shifter, and the steering was pretty nice. the seat felt good too. the clutch was a bit "off" to me... I have read some people complained about the clutch engagement... I didn't dislike it.. but I can see why some people might prefer something that feels different. I got to test drive it on some city streets, and got it into 3rd and 4th a few times and was able to hammer the gas. At the very end of the test drive was a small section fo road that let me go pretty fast arond a few turns and see what the car could do. Here are a few observations of the things I did not care for: i felt like first gear ran out way too fast. as soon as I was on the gas it was time to shift. i know first gear can be a quick gear, but this was too quick. almost made first gear kind of a waste. I did like how the car could ber very compliant and subdued when you babied it. if you drive the car out of boost, it just feels like a "regular" car. it was smooth, relatively quiet... it woudl be just like any other Mazda3 in terms of being an economical hatchback. BUT, once you get into the boost, it gets up and takes off. i could tell the car had much more pull in 3rd and 4th. you could feel the boost build and the torque come on pretty nicely. the power was definitelyl there. it wasn'st so fast that I was pressed back in my seat - but for sure it has plenty of pickup and woudl dust a lot of cars. one thing I did not care for was the powerband feels very very narrow. like the turbo comes on at 3k and by 5500 it's gone. so you have this great rush of power that comes on, and just when you are thinking "yeah, this thing is hauling butt", the power just falls off and you have to shift. the turbo must not have the ability to push enough air to maintain higher rpm boost? the car would have been piles more fun if it could hold that kind of power up to 6500-7000 rpm. the power is there, but it feels like it cuts out way too soon. the rear seats were a bit on the small side - but I'll readily admit this is totally subjective and class specific. i havne't looked at a civic / EVO / Sti to compare. remember i'm driving an Acura RL, a pretty large sedan.. so i'm used to a huge back seat that three adults can fit in and be comfortable in. the smallest car I have driven lately was a loaner TSX and I felt that car had bigger/wider better back seats than the Speed3... even that car, though, is a larger car. it wasn't like I was expecting the speed3 to be as big in the back as an accord or something - but for my personal needs - the car may be too small. the materials on the car were not bad at all, in fact, for a car in this price point, I think it was darn nice. Remember, my car is an Acura RL that is the flagship of Acura and is easily on par with a Lexus in terms of interior refinement. so i'm used to a very very luxxurious car..and while the MS3 was nowhere as nice inside as mh Acura..it was nice enouhg and for the money, it was really nice. I woudl have no problem driving a car with this thpe of interior... mazda does interiors nicely. i remember when i test drove the RX8 i felt the interior, feel, fit/finish on everything was really nice too. as a comparison, my bro in law has a relatively new WRX and the MS3 felt like a luxury car vs his subaru. i felt mazda did a very nice job putting it together. yes, some of the plastics were hard / not as high end as you'd find in my Acura...but it's very nice for what you pay. the one that actually surpised me and left an unpleasant feeling when the test drive was over was the torque steer! i felt the steering wheel tug a little bit here/there during the test drive, but nothing that I felt was bad or intolerable. then on the twisty section of the test drive, I was in second gear and gave it full throttle through a small turn.. and HOLY MOTHER F*&^ING $hit.... the steering wheel literally jerked enough to almost send me into the other lane. i have felt torque steer before. I have owned two FWD cars. one was a turbocharged car with about 250hp... it torque steered. I have driven a few TL type S that had torque steer. The MS3 torque steer is the worts i"ve ever felt. the steering wheel did not just wiggle.. it literally felt like the car was going to change lanes if I hadn't grabbed it and corrected. that was unsettling and not confidence inspriring at all. I'm honestly not sure I could live with it. I knwo some people wouldn't mind.. but to me, it is probably a deal breaker. the car did not make me feel like I was in control. it made me feel like i was hanging on for a ride... I used to have a boxster..albeit a very old one with FAR less power than the MS3. what that car lacked in power it made up for in pure balance and agility. it was like when you drove it - it was one with you. before I bought hte boxster, I almost bought an RX8. that car had teh same "one with you" feeliingi that I got from the boxster. it wasn't as fast as an MS3, but it was more balanced, and you could drive it at the limit and feel like it would not let you down.... the MS3 would have me nervous on everyh turn that one bump, or poorly timed torque steer session would send me off the road or into a guardrail ... for driving at normal speeds or at 7/10ths.. it's fine. pushed hard, I think it has serious limitions as a real sports car or sporty car. I can see why a lot of guys who start with MS3, end up dumping them for true AWD or RWD sports car. I think I am going to sleep on it. I'm not saying 100% no that I wouldn't want one of these cars. If my current car were totalled tomorrow and I HAD to buy a new car righ tnow.. I'd seriously consider an MS3 even with these "shortcomings".. while it's not perfect... it is still a really nice car for the money. No, it's better than that - it's an AMAZING car for the money. i just think that having driven an AWD car for so long that I'm not ready to go back to a FWD Car. I may want to look at a 335i. i think that might ber more up my alley. or perhaps an AWD TL??? if I could get a really nice CPO one of those in the high 20s... with low enogh miles and an extended warranty - that might fit my needs a bit better. i appreciate all the comments and input from everyone. thanks. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score The power falling off in the high RPMs can be helped a lot with a tune alone. Mazda has the car programmed to close the throttle plate above 5500 for turbo longevity. The car will still lose power after 5500 with a good tune, but it's a gradual drop, not like someone throwing out an anchor. The tq steer can be helped tremendously with upgraded motor mounts. A rear motor mount alone helps a ton. First gear being too short is a common complaint. The pre-2010 models had a closer ratio trans, but the 2010+ has taller 2-5 gears to stretch shifts out a little. First gear is still admittedly too low for most. There are a few shortcomings in stock trim that can easily be overcome with well thought out mods. Cobb AP tuner, motor mount(s), intake, and fuel pump upgrade would give you a very different impression. Maybe someone in your area could meet up with you and give you a test ride/drive in a modded one so that you can see what you have to work with! NATOR SoCal, c'mon.

| Not Ranked : 0 score OP, have you driven the current gen WRX? I know you mention the car a few times and that a friend has one, and that the interior is not all that great, but if you are looking for AWD, family friendly, go-anywhere, do anything performance for mid to high 20's, the WRX seems like the car for you. |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score i would be interested in seeing a modified one. maybe someone in so cal has one they want to show off? I'm in the San Diego area - north county. a 335i would be fun...but could be out of my reach. my TRUE price limit is around 28k. I have accounted for the addition of tax/fees on top of the 28k and that is abou thte max I want to spend on a car. i can get a 335i for 25-28k... albeit not a really highly optioned one. I enjoy all the tech goodies on my RL.. a tech package MS3 would have the BT streaming, BT phone, nav... not all the goodies my RL has but enough. while my RL lacks BT streaming, I have full ipod integration via a cable... even the song info shows up on my nav screen. my headlights swivel itno turns... heated seats.. nav.. voice commandds.. it's tech overload... another car I am considering iwoudl be a CPO TL SH-AWD. maybednot quite as fast as a MS3.. but quick and handling is really nice dfue to AWD.. those can be had in the high 20s as well... if anyone has a tricked MS3 they want to show off let me know. I don't liek the WRX. i hate how they sound. i know some people love it.. it woudl drive me insane. my fear with the 335i is that while I coudl afford to buy one... once the CPO warranty runs out.. two years... i'd be fuC*ED with repairs and othe rBS. the 335i is not the most reliable and some of the crap that woudl break woudl cost an arm and a leg. so i think i coudl afford to buy it. perhaps not maintain it and own it long term.. one guy at work I told about hte MS3 said I would look like i was having a mid life crisiis if I drove one to work. i work in a whilte collar / professional environment. lots of BMW, M/B, Lexus, etc.. you get the idea. (there is one MS3 in the parkkng lot though! nto sure who's it is.. but a gen1 red one that is lowered... mayve I shoudl leave a note on tehir car asking for a test drive?? |
