Still no snow till the 22nd of december...only little flakes.
The WS-60 are good but the first week they were slippery on dry, I guess they were greassy or something. Now they feel good, but the side wall is soft. It can't take turns too hard.

Tire manufacturers use a releasing agent on the tire molds before they inject the melted rubber. This oil/grease is still on the tire when you get them, and needs to be burned off by careful driving for a couple hundred miles.

not sure how people are having problems in the winter. last year in MN we had one of the snowiest winters in a long time. i threw some blizzaks on and could go up hills that suv's were spinning out on no prob. also felt like i had better control than my moms audi a4 on all seasons.

oh i know all about the negatives... -20 last year plus another -30 wind chill. and its dry up here at 6k feet. and with all seasons on, i have no problem driving in snow. just sucks when i go over bumps. the squeaking is a lil annoying.

As far as the releasing agent, you can alternatively wash them if you had them shipped to your house. I had time after work (but not enough to get them on,) so I used some detergent and then Bleche-White with a scrub-brush to clean them off before I took them down to get installed. No grease anymore.

Side-note: If you get winter wheels, find cheap aluminum wheels. Steel wheels rust and get bent. Make sure they use bead-sealer either way (and if you get used aluminum, make sure they clean the rim with a die grinder and light-duty pad.)

Update on the WS-60 P225/40R18, wheel fitment is good. But the tire looked streatched on the rim.

Freezing rain in Quebec these days, no snow. So, on ice it's all good. Now about some snow...it's december 22nd, we need snow!

I got my ms3 a few weeks ago and didn't even look at the tires, I had too much fun test driving it to care
After a few days I finally got around to looking and decided to get my first set of winter tires ever
Got a set of altimax Arctic premounted and balanced on 17" msw 14 rims
looks decent and I spent 950

I miss the stocks though, we haven't had snow yet and the winter tires feel squshy, taking turns at high speeds doesn't feel safe. I skow the fuck down when changing lanes on the highway and stay below 85mph.
I want it snow already so I can see what the ms3 + winter can do...

Necessity. Speed ratings are directly related to the time spent at that speed... which was about 10 seconds...

I completely understand but what I am saying is your braking and handling are severely hindered already, especially at those speeds. I am going to assume you are on a 60 series sidewall. Can you imagine how much fail would happen if you were to have a blowout at that speed as opposed to say 70? That's a bull I wouldn't want to ride!

Then I realized how fast I was going and shat my pants.

My point was that the speed rating should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm still on those tires b/c I didn't have the money for new rims last years for my summers - they've gone over 18 mos and still have about 5/32nds on them.

General Arctic Altimax + 16" Steelies from tire rack. No rubbing issues at all. I have painted calipers as well with about 6 coats of the brushed-on duplicolor paint.

In the end, these are about an inch off in diameter compared to the stocks, but do not affect the speedometer at all as I've seen suggested elsewhere.

Took them out today in the first real snow of the year in NW PA. Icy/packed snow on pavement and about 3" of snow on dirt roads. Handled better than I could have hoped. I am very impressed with these tires. I can certainly drive with confidence.

Hey that's the exact same setup I got from Tirerack! Still no snow here in NH though. I hope they last at least a few seasons because if I go WOT in any gear below 4 they just spin and spin haha. I'm anxious to use them after riding the dunlops in the snow last year, man I was an idiot.

Got the 16" package from tirerack and was just wondering, should I get hubcaps? Cuz I don't like seeing the surface rust at the openings of the center of the wheels. Would this happen normally anyways?

I put my winter wheels on early and got the surface rust on the hubs... Yes, it's ugly. I scrubbed off the rust and painted them black this week. I used some high temp engine paint I had laying around. I doubt its going to stick very well, but I'll find something better eventually. I doubt caps would stop that from happening, but it would hide it. I kind of like the black wheels... The Steelies are lame, but are better than most hub caps I've seen. Maybe I'll get some sweet spinner hub caps ;-)

Painted the calipers this weekend too with the duplicolor brush on. I did the caliper brackets and clips in black. Obviously not great timing considering its winter and I have the Steelies on, but i wanted the experience of pulling the calipers and bleeding the lines. Wasn't difficult, but glad I did it. I'll just have to touch them up in the spring. I didn't pull the rear calipers completely bc of the pain with the ebrake cables. Just hung them over the rotors to paint them.

Regardless, I just touched the hubs with the black high heat engine spray paint. I painted the caliper brackets and clips with the same paint. You can still see a bit of the rust around the edges (the back turned out better). I'll probably paint them with duplicolor next winter that should stick a little better.

First pic is the rust. Hard to see as it was a deep orange(wet rust and very ugly). Second is front hub, and caliper, painted.

got 2 new general's installed today on the front, had about 30k on the generals and they were pretty worn. the rear ones held up longer so I left them alone for now, if I notice the ass end starting to slide around I will get 2 more.

230$ out the door for 2 mounted/balanced and disposal of the old ones at my local shop, didn't think that was too bad, considering they were 80~$/tire + shipping off tirerack.

meh, my rear ones have a good amount of traction, I drove in the snow right afterwards and the assend stays planted, even when I tried to make it slide out. I'm not concerned.

If Oversteer isn't too bad I don't see why not doing what you did. If they're really bald than ok putting in the front would be better.

But I like getting traction and turning. Even if I end up doing a little oversteer in the process.

I'll be rotating the tires next month to make sure they wear evenly.

So Washington finally got hit with snow today and I have my toyo proxe4s on - that shit is SCARY to drive on. I'm from San Diego originally so this whole snow tire thing is new to me. Needless to say im heading out to get a set ASAP since those toyo's grip for shit in this weather....

I've had 0 oversteer issues with the current setup, only problem with the generals is they spin pretty much anytime you apply torque lol, was getting wheelspin at the top of 3rd gear haha.

When I was stock I was getting wheel spin at the top of fourth on certain dry pavement types with those tires. But god damn they are amazing in the snow.

Your car comes with summer tires. So there will be little to no traction in even a dusting of snow.

any summer tire under 50F will preform pretty poorly. I would highly recommend at minimum all seasons if you don't get that much snow, if you get more than 1-2 snows a month I'd go full winter tires.
