MS3 tops out at 138 mph. Is something wrong?

I drove with a friend this weekend and we did a couple of top speed runs...on a closed course naturally. The car (recently purchased used, with low mileage) wouldn't get above about 138, but I see the top speed listed as 155. The MPGs were about 28 once we just cruised at 75-85mph, so I don't think anything major is wrong, but I was surprised to see the 'speed 3 accelerate so slowly above 125 and stop at about 138. Could something be wrong with his car?

emag remrofni 04-26-2011 12:39 AM

It's a genpu. That's your problem.

rodrigo 04-26-2011 12:44 AM

i bet if u donate u will pick up at least 10 mph

PapaSmurf 04-26-2011 12:47 AM

With just an intake on my car i got up to 145mph and felt like i could of kept going. Never tried it with a fully stock car.

Hamilton69 04-26-2011 01:09 AM

you shouldnt have any problems....if he has a programmer on the car see if the top speed limiter is set wrong? you do know there's 6 gears right? SHIFT UP!!!

zx2man 04-26-2011 01:14 AM

this car can do 150 stock Iam pretty sure. After 140 this car will lose steam, unless your BT ofcourse. When I was just mildly bolted I got up to 145 fairly quickly, but back down cause I was enterting into a rather police infested area. Ive seen quite few videos of ms3's doing 150+

Something is up.

DONOTBUGME 04-26-2011 01:16 AM

need driver mod

Whiteboy 04-26-2011 01:19 AM

Isn't stock ECU flash speed limiter set at 135? Think that is your problem OP...that and you are a faggot!

Night Wolf 04-26-2011 01:35 AM

Something must be wrong with your car. I took mine to 140 with just an intake on the road going slightly uphill. And car felt like it could go even faster with no problem.

155

Whiteboy 04-26-2011 01:45 AM

Hmmm, couldn't get mine to go past 135ish...must have been my tires because they are absolute complete crapola. Whatever, I got new mods otw that will take care of all that now.

zx2man 04-26-2011 01:55 AM

gen2 White?

Your car is capable above 135 for sure. I honestly been running the AP since I dam near got my car, so I dont even remember what a stock tune is like lol. But even with intake-testpipe with a ots stage 1 103 map my car had zero issues getting to 130-140 very easily with more on the tap.

Genwon! At the time of trying to max out my speed, the only performance mod I had was SRI. I couldn't get that bitch beyond 135ish going downhill. I think it's a combination of shitty ass rims and shitty ass tires.

I have a tendancy to buy on the whim and not think things thru. I'm pretty sure my rims are heavy as fuck and I ended up with H rated tires because I forgot to click the "upgrade" tire option when I purchased the package. I'm gonna go back to stock rims and get some better tires when I get home. Then sell my PoS rims and get some new performance ones.

zx2man 04-26-2011 02:35 AM

Yeah get your shit squared away, cause with your modlist you should have zero issues doing least 150. Heck I got my stock 07 si 197bhp to 130 on the freeway, and they can top out @ like 140 if you got enough road. Stock ms3 should do 150....heck ive seen youtube videos of the older wrx's doing 140+ stock.

mzr0818 04-26-2011 02:51 AM

:nutkick:genpu FTL. First day I had mine with just an intake hit 155 limiter.

rghispanic88 04-26-2011 04:23 AM

152 with an intake.

just take it to the dealer and tell them you are trying to max out at 155. lol

Juan1 04-26-2011 02:04 PM

Any thoughts about troubleshooting? Is a small vacuum leak a likely culprit if the car runs fine otherwise?

MONST3R 04-26-2011 02:41 PM

ive taken mine to 155 with intake/bov. Pretty crazy adrenaline rush!

Tokay444 04-26-2011 02:45 PM

mine hits 260ish stock without a hitch.

MONST3R 04-26-2011 02:50 PM

lol showoff....

whats the conversion to mph?

Dash08 04-26-2011 02:50 PM

What is this shit about MS3's not pulling hard after 120?

I wound my motor out like that once, she had no problem reaching 155. Actually, it was pretty impressive for a $22,000 dollar car.

I don't understand what people are complaining about.

The speed rating of the tire has nothing to do with how fast the car can go, just at what speed the tire is safe.

So now we're counting on mpg's to determine whether or not a car can fully approach top speed? Might be your turbos not working, hence great mpg's, and no powah...

Ferdball 04-26-2011 03:26 PM

Mine is knock limited to about 120.

Stealth01 04-26-2011 03:36 PM

The problem is that you're not AWD. The MZR DISI 2.3L is electronically limited to 135 in the MS3 (you got an extra 3mph!!) because FWD can't handle safely anything above that. If you had an AWD MS6, you'd be able to send the remaining, unsprung horsepower to the rear wheels and actually get the car to 155.

There is a way to get your MS3 up to 155, though. Drop it out of an airplane.

:D

(see how long it takes for OP to figure this one out...)

SIXual Panda 04-26-2011 03:36 PM

to get above 140mph, you need nos... like paul walker.

boostislove 04-26-2011 03:44 PM

the higher the top speed, the bigger the penis of the driver.

Tokay444 04-26-2011 03:46 PM

Terminal velocity is right around 120mph. So dropping out of a plane won't help.

Then factor in the resistance of a CAR falling, and you are nowhere near 155...

This is not true. Gen 1 was elec limited to 155mph and they will do that stock. Genpu (2010) changed gear ratios including final drive ratio and was drag limited to 150mph. So if other factors are also causing additional drag or power use it will not make it to that speed.

Moral of the story is It may be the happier version, but the smile slows you down.

The ACTUAL moral of the story is, to learn when someone is being sarcastic.

Matt1684 04-26-2011 04:52 PM

I have a genpu and just took my car to 155 2 weekends ago, then again, I have an intake and an AP.

No, I count on MPG's to help with troubleshooting.

Any common air leak areas I should check?
