Default Mishimoto's Catch Can R&D Thread

Hey Guys,

Nick here from Mishimoto, I just wanted to let you guys know that we have a direct fit catch can in the works for the Speed 3. We've currently test fit on a Gen1 and if you have a Gen2 in the Delaware/Philly/Maryland area, we'd love to have you in for a test fit. Anyways, on to the project.

I don't have to tell you guys that the 2.3L MZR Turbo laid the groundwork for what we now know as Ford's EcoBoost series engines. From what we've seen between the several different EB engines we've had in, not to mention our experience with early direct injected turbo engines, we already knew that the MS3 was highly susceptible to large amounts of engine blowby and intake valve carbon buildup.

We we're wrong, either especially after our engineer started digging into our loaner MS3. The intake boot was coated in the murky stuff, meaning that the rest of the top end internals could be in worse shape. The Speed3 runs into a unique problem, in that the top mounted intercooler is prone to heat-soaking, and can bake those oil deposits into the heat exchanger's passageways, effectively quashing the cooling properties.

Luckily, we've been hard at work developing a direct fit catch can to keep the contaminated crankcase pressure out of your top end, with a presale coming up very soon. I'll have an update on the kit itself by the end of the week, but until then make sure you check out the full write-up on our Engineering Blog.

Feel free to shoot me any questions you might have!

-Nick

I'm in Philly (Bryn Mawr) and would happily volunteer my GenPu for testing. I'm looking into catch can options for this winter's upgrade list, too.
Shoot me a PM if you want to set something up.

Looks good. If it is competitively priced with Corksport/JBR/Damond/etc I am interested. It's nice to see another company introduce their products but there are alot of cans out there already. If not price, I will be interested to see what benefits the Mishimoto can provide over the others.

Hey Guys,

I'm back with another installment of our catch can development, and we have plenty of info to share!

While the Mazdaspeed department might not be around anymore, the Speed 3 is still out there on the road racking up the miles. After a decade of being on the road, the MZR propelling these hot-hatches along might have seen plenty of replacement parts along the road, but there's system that you never want to have to replace, and that's the valve-train. In our last installment we went over the causes of blow-by, and as many of you know, these engines are highly susceptible to copious amounts of carbon buildup.

While this photo might have been from one of the Speed 3's direct competitors, the MKV GTI, the story is still the same, if not worse. Over our development period for this catch can system, we ran two separate 1000 mile tests, leading to two different results. The first was in warmer weather, yielding what we might call a standard collection of about 18 ml. However during the colder months the story was much different, and our short test produced approximately 100 ml in the same time span.

With such a large amount of blow-by collected, it was a no-brainer to utilize our larger, 7.5 oz. catch can over our standard 2 oz. compact can.

For the full write up, including our mounting and our prototype kit, check out our latest post on the Engineering Blog.

We've launched the presale for this kit specifically for the Gen1, but don't worry we're still planning on adding the Gen2 to the list. We're still on the hunt for one in the area, so feel free to reach out if you're willing to let us do a test fitting!

Thanks,

-Nick

That's a great question, which one are you running? I can take a look and get back to you on that one.

For reference, this is where it sits under the airbox:

Just from that I would say that it would interfere with the CAI, but the hoses are pretty flexible, so there might be a work-around.

On my car a corksport aftermarket intake is smaller in size than the stock intake. I believe this is true of most if not all other intakes. My cold air intake easily clears the shift plate area that has the shift counterweight. Seems like the mishimoto can is level with that counterweight so I believe it will easily clear most aftermarket intakes.

Took a look at that system just from what I could find in a quick search and it looks like it won't interfere at all with the catch can mounting. The filter looks to mount on the other side of the body rail as the catch can.

Guess I'll ask it directly this time.

There are a lot of cans out there already. If not price, what benefits the Mishimoto catch can will provide over the others?

That's a great question, and I apologize for not answering it earlier!

So not only do we employ the use of a baffle plate within the can, but our 50 micron bronze filter makes sure that our system is keeping every bit of blow-by within the can. We've also incorporated a check valve within the lines to make sure that none of the captured murky liquid even has the chance to seep back into the system under boost. On top of that, we made sure that our 7.5 oz can is mounted as securely as possible in an easily accessible location for easy servicing.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions@!

Just a quick note : I use a metal filter on my cranckcase ventilation system, and some condensation froze in the filter during the cold winter night...the Holset then began pucking some oil in the downpipe (cranckcase pressure buildup as there was no place for the blowby to escape) and there was a nice cloud of smoke when I got out to the car (Il let the car warmup in winter for the kids)

I would suggest adding a relief valve option for those who live in cold weather (for pressure relief until the OCC warm up)

Just my 0.2$

Since we're still on presale, we're still a few weeks out on shipping these, but we are currently slotted for early January. I'll keep you posted if anything changes!

Hey, that car looks familiar...
No issues with my OCC yet, but I honestly haven't been driving the speed as much as I'd like given the weather. Salt spray = no good given the work I need to do under the car this winter.

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to bump up the thread to let you know that we have officially released our catch can kit! Those of you on the presale list should be receiving shipping notifications shortly! Also keep your eye out for a payment update notification as well. For your security, we only hold credit card information for 30 days, so if you ordered at the start of the presale you might need to update your info!

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

-Nick
