My pu got hit in the rear

3 Attachment(s)
Watched everything happen in the rear view mirror and had no way of escaping...
The other driver almost side swiped someone, got distracted, and failed to notice my big blue ass.
He slammed his breaks a while before he hit me, so his nose was pointed down.
Was a 93 camry, his front drivers corner went under my passenger rear corner.
Somehow there was enough force to twist things around and force one of his license plate screws into my bumper right above the exhaust, and even to put a kink in the upper body panel between hatch and rear passenger window.
Waiting for appraiser to make an appointment to see it, I drove it away from the scene but something feels weird, maybe alignment or suspension damage?

Any rough ideas on what this will cost the other guys insurance?
At least now I can get the lower bumper area painted to match the front grill instead of plasti dipping it like I planned to. Maybe even score an aftermarket exhaust instead of OEM, even if its just an axle-back, and tail lights. Are the 2011+ tail lights equipped with yellow directionals?

bigriver 04-30-2012 08:10 AM

Sorry to hear that. Are you okay?

I would bet that driver was texting or fb status update.

I would guess the damage would be at least $5k.

Yeah man, I'm fine - thanks for asking.
All I know is that he was paying more attention to the car to his right, than to what was going on in front.
Was a younger kid, maybe 20-22 years old. He just got the car he was driving it seemed like, since he had temporary insurance printouts.
I feel bad, but shit... L2 drive.
His airbags got deployed, and horn started going off - someone pulled over and disconnected his battery.
His car got towed, and he got a ride home (or wherever he was going) in the back seat of a police cruiser

silentwolf8 04-30-2012 08:21 AM

looks like you stole one of their screws in the second picture. lol

sorry to hear about the hit man, glad your good. like they always say though, could have always been worse.

leon78 04-30-2012 08:21 AM

Dam...thats shitty man, best of luck. Show the fucker he best not mess with a blue pu!

makjur 04-30-2012 08:25 AM

I'm thinking at LEAST, bumper and exhaust has to get replaced
The hatch seem doesnt line up properly anymore, on the right side - neither does the rear passenger door on that side.
Part of the tail light feels wobbly, the part thats visible inside of the hatch

I'll be pissed if any structural damage happened and the car doesnt get totaled in that case.

cesaros 04-30-2012 08:27 AM

sucks man, hopefully his insurance fixes your car quickly...

the kink in your body panel up near the window would be my biggest concern...to get a kink up there, something structurally must have gotten tweaked pretty bad. I wouldn't be surprised if your rear control arms are warped.

When I saw the kink I actually got worried about this.
I hope it gets written off so I can get a new 2012 pu

Yeah, I'm not a fan of body work. I prefer to just get a new car. Once you get hit like that, the car is never 100% again. :( Wouldn't count on it, to be honest.

These uni-body (frame and body are 1 piece) designs are easily damaged. Maybe you'll get lucky and have frame damage.

adlpb 04-30-2012 08:52 AM

I was rear ended 3 times in my previous car in similar situations to you (red light).

I hope the other guy had legit insurance. Good luck repairing it. I doubt there's any frame damage which would total the car. Make sure you get a depreciated car value credit since this shit will be in your carfax now.

Atlanta 04-30-2012 08:52 AM

Maybe you can get a paint job to black out of the deal.

Darth_Nuruodo 04-30-2012 09:32 AM

Good luck, glad you're not hurt. But that kink by the window is probably a bad sign. Since he hit you low and what sounds like at an angle, and it twisted enough to cause a kink that high, there were some serious stresses involved and I would be really worried about the structural health of that car. At the least it sounds like he probably through your alignment off, if not twisted everything up. GL with the estimate, run his insurance for everything you can.

Whats this depreciated car thing?
Should I ask the appraiser person about it when they come to look?

It's basically the lower value of your car's re-sale price since the accident is in the carfax report. This link explains it in detail.

I was rearended and got the same kink. Its designed to do that.

Mine was a tad worse and cost 5k to fix.

The second time I was raerended my hatch was completely demolished. another 6K to fix.

They wont total that.

Did u have any non superficial damage?
Suspension, breaks, exhaust?

My exhaust was fubared in both hits. had shop replace with UR exhaust, I just had to cover the difference of what insurance would give for stock replacement. Second hit the UR exhaust was fully covered.

All else was fine.

JT.Tuckerman 04-30-2012 11:41 AM

Ouch. Gonna be expensive. 1K for new bumper cover and paint. 1K for exhaust if it's new and 1K for the rest- tail light, door, hatch repair, paint and clear coat. So I estimate 3K total. We were rear ended in our SUV. Just a small scratch right in the middle- cost 400 bucks just for paint & clear coat, no structural damage, no new parts. Guy who rear ended us paid.

ASHMS3 04-30-2012 11:42 AM

That sucks man, glad you're okay.

duappleganger 04-30-2012 12:23 PM

did the kid who hit you have an attitude?

p057 04-30-2012 12:42 PM

I hope the best for you, but there is no way that car will be a total loss, imo.

I hate accidents too, but hell, have it repaired by the best body shop that you can, and just enjoy it for what it is.

If it were me, I might get a body shop to repair it structurally without paint, and take the remaining insurance $ and have a nice matte wrap done on the entire car.

This is an awesome idea.... Not too bad either from the estimates I've seen for wrapping, $1500-$2000 to do the entire car and it's good for 5+ years with only basic maintenance seems really good. Matte black or matte white soooo sexy on these too.

any idea how much a full wrap goes for?

See above, also factor in savings on maintenance. No more expensive soaps, sealants, and waxes. Hose, dish soap, and soft towel == win.

Voltron 04-30-2012 01:50 PM

Glad you're ok op, but I really doubt they will total out your car. Way I understand it is damage has to be greater than half of your car's value.

But look on the bright side of things. If this were me in this situation...and I'm not saying to do this BUT I would go to a body shop thats willing to work with you, and jack up prices on everything so that your deductable is covered, and I'd have them start ordering upgraded shit. You would be surprised how expensive OEM shit can get.

Good luck though. Now go comb thru the vip for sale threads lol. Theres a guy selling a ultimate racing exhaust lol.

I agree, I want to try to get as much stuff done through this as possible
paint lower bumper area black
get new tail lights - fuck the red directionals i have now
new exhaust, or axleback at least

probably wont go for the wrap for now, down the road yes

CWP_MS3 04-30-2012 02:18 PM

You might be surprised what the insurance company is willing to negotiate about. My buddy had a ball joint break on his evo and drop the front end. It also happened to launch his wheel across the highway.

He talked them into a carbon fiber front lip and 4 new after market wheels, since it was cheaper than the 2 that got fucked up.

Same guy, different event:
He had his front seats stolen from his car. The seats through mitsu were outrageously priced, so he got them to pay for BRIDE fully carbo fiber backed suede seats. I was jelly.

Insurance adjustment like a boss. Hell I'm jelly just reading it. Though this would be the case for us as well in some circumstances. Wheels are a good example, our stockers are ridiculously expensive from Mazda USA, so if something happens to them that you can claim on your insurance, you can pick up a nice set of lighter aftermarkets with even stickier rubber for less than just the stock rims. I'm hoping that if I ever have to use my insurance for a claim I can get them to toss in a set of wheels. Though I never want to have to go that route, fingers crossed.

TO THE OP.

i just went thru the same ordeal.

about same damages as your maybe a little worse, same dam kink in that spot !!

good luck.

surebOOst 05-01-2012 12:09 AM

I did not read your post but I think its safe to guess that the driver of the 93 camry was asian with thick glasses and he immedeately started blaming you for the accicdent?
