@chudson91 There are alot of things that you can do. If you want a bike there are alot of alternatives to getting a big supersport. Most everyone I know told me to get this and get that but in the end I didnt take any of thier advise really. I had a smart guy tell me to give a try to the newer (08+) ninja 250r. And I know most people are gonna talk shit because it is a 250 and they are slow yeah yeah yeah. They handle aggressive as hell and are plenty fast up to about 60-80. The top speed on mine is a little over 100. It is fun as hell to ride and will if nothing else get you into good habits riding because you dont have the crazy power of the 600.
Just as a side note to the insurance thing it is way cheaper. It is considered to be a sport bike and not a supersport. My insurance for 12 months is 294 and is going down to 200 when i renew. I love to ride and they are cheap bikes. You can normally pick one up for less than 3k. Just an option that I wanted to put out there for you to look into.

There's really nothing like it. Wearing the proper gear helps on the safety aspect also. I always wear an Aerostich riding suit (or mesh jacket in the summer), riding boots and a full face helmet. Plus you can get a bike with ABS like my 04 Honda VFR800, which I think is a really nice thing to have. Maybe look into getting an SV650, they are decently cheap, available with ABS and a whole lot of fun; probably a decent beginner bike and plenty fast enough for when you get better.
+1 yup yup yup....preach....although after I learned to ride it was a SV650 or a ZX6R, so glad I went with the Z. now that i have the 3 though, i think the bike is going up on Craigslist soon idk decisions decisions....
