Nextmod GV grill does not fit! Did they send me the wrong grill?

3 Attachment(s)
Okay so... Shop tried to mount the nextmod gv style grill that I bought, and it fits vertically, but horizontally it does not fit at all. There's seriously 1-2 inch gap on each side. I have called nextmod, and asked them if they have sent me a wrong grill insert. And they mentioned that they have sent the correct grill and it should fit perfectly, which I don't think it is. Does anybody who have had installed this grill had the same issue? if so, how did you make it fit? or Does everyone think they just sent me the wrong one?

welcome to nextmod.

doctavus 01-10-2013 06:43 PM

Ouch.

Jhornbrook 01-10-2013 07:03 PM

It wasn't ever supposed to fit. It's for the regular 3 which is a few inches narrower. Good luck with modifying your silly grille. Few people did it, not worth the trouble especially if your paying someone else.

GreyGhost 01-10-2013 07:58 PM

Their product fitment sucks. I have a rear lip spoiler professionally refinished and painted matte black and still don't know if I want to mount it.

Voltron 01-10-2013 08:32 PM

@kritz;

Maybe his was off too...but his Pu was black and maybe not as noticeable? This was of course before it became a submarine.

Voltwings 01-10-2013 08:39 PM

@tooslow10;

Zbrit00x 01-10-2013 08:49 PM

Fitment is shit.. If you want you can cut out the center
Of the stock grille ( retains stock mounting tabs and gives you space all around to play with) then attach the gv grille to the stock cut up one. Just an idea.. I have a replica sat in my garage.. It's not worth the hassle IMO

rfinkle2 01-10-2013 08:53 PM

When I ordered my lip kit, they sent me the Mazda 3 version. Maybe that is for a regular 3?

H_L910 01-10-2013 08:58 PM

Thank you everyone for your opinions! I can't believe I paid $250 for stuff that doesn't even fit, and they are not admitting they've sent me a grill for regular 3. Brydon from Corksport was trying to fit it, but there's no way to get rid of that gap. Unless I do some custom fiberglass work, which I don't think it's worth doing. and They asked Steve Kritz, and he actually did bunch of custom fitting. I think I'm giving up on this one. I hope I can sell it for something. This will be the last thing I'll ever buy from next mod.

Ok, listen up! When you install this grille you must use the oem grille as part of the install. Firstly it is an integral part of the structure of the front bumper, I called Brydon @CorkSport; and explained to him that the OEM grille needs to be gutted of its interior leaving just the very perimeter and then starting from the center and working your way outwards fixing the fiberglass NM grille with stainless steel #6 x3/4" pan head screws with washers through drilled holes in the NM grille. I did the install by myself on my driveway in 98 degree heat and it took 4 hours. Perhaps bring it to a body shop to do. It is not an injection molded snap in piece it will take some finessing to install.

H_L910 01-11-2013 06:30 AM

Alright, Thank you Steve for the install tips! I'll try it myself once I get my car back from the rebuild.

tooslow10 01-11-2013 06:54 AM

i will tell you it is very hard to get in the right place. it took me around
8 hours of cussing, bleeding, on, off, on, off, on....3m tape and sharpie
marker, zip ties, some little screws...after all was said and done, i'm not
as unhappy as i was. but i would recommend taking the front bumper
and insert to a body shop and let them fit it...i was quoted 150 to do
it and i was like, oh i got this cuz wetbacks know about that p&b, annnnnd
i was wrong...

By the way, I love that look on your ms3 @kritz; Are you going to be mounting this same grill on your new cwp ms3?

That's awesome! I'd love to see how it'll look your your new ms3! Once I get my car back from the rebuild, I'm planning on painting rear valance, fog light housing, and this gv grill in satin black, and try and attempt to fit this grill again. I still think this grill is for regular 3, but I've got a response from nextmod today and they've requested some pictures of tabs on the grill to see if they sent me a wrong one or not.. we shall see..

Celestspeed3 01-12-2013 02:14 PM

Install takes along time. I bolted mine in to the mounting tabs and had to trim some of the upright peices to make it fit better on the car. It's not a straight forward install but it does fit.

Yeldarb 01-12-2013 09:02 PM

Bummer about your fitments issues. Mine was Garage Vary, which doesn't guarantee any better fitment, but I had no gaps.

I had a shop do the install, painted gloss black to match the rear valance.

I as already mentioned the OE grill is a big part of the front bar, but I had it removed completely because I didn't want to gut it for resale purposes.

So... I took everything to body shop yesterday to get it professionally painted and installed. Even body shop is saying that this grill is not for mazdaspeed 3. So I called to nextmod and told them the issue. They are saying that it seems like they sent me the right one, if not there's a possibility that manufacture might have messed up on fabricating grill process. I measured the top corners and I measured it approximately 49inches wide. Can anyone tell me if your nextmod gv grill is 49 inches wide? If not longer?

kritz 01-16-2013 12:09 PM

I'll measure mine when it gets back from paint.

Neverlift 01-16-2013 12:29 PM

i just got this grill today for free from a buddy, its brand new still and am reading all this and it sounds like a pain in the ass, the tow hook cover doesn't even sit flush on it, i'm going to give it a shot and see if they've fixed the fitment size since you guys purchased yours!

kritz 07-20-2013 10:02 PM

Mine fit, but you can fix it some foam and fiberglass. Or you can call Peter at Nextmod in Toronto and see what he can do for you.

@mike16241; He has it in. Looks like shit IMO. Not enough time taken to make it look really good I don't think. And on top of the fitment issues with the front bumper, He has the CPE FMIC with their crashbar, and that doesn't fit either. Had to cut up the grill to make it fit and so the corner sticks out the front. Maybe if he ACTUALLY looks at his shit to see I quoted him, he can elaborate and post some pics for you. Overall, it's a bigger pain in the ass than I would want to go through.

brandonlee 08-16-2013 10:36 PM

@Yeldarb;

What front lip is that? Next mod? Did that need custom fitting as well?

Said it before. Go to a shop to fit it. They have the tools and you can have decent expectations of a good job...

Hehe... It's an EBay special. $89. Not the best fitment. But it looked good once in. Now it's in 3 pieces after a track day a while back... :(

Idk if you seen the Chargespeed lip but IMO they look really nice and there is a easy how to install thread to go by. They are also like 55-65$ on ebay

brandonlee 08-17-2013 07:42 PM

yeah @SpeedLife;
ive seen that one im just unsure if i like the wings on the side of the lip. and ive seen like every model of car with that lip so that kinda draws me away.

From my understanding the Speed 3 grill and the regular grill are different. At japan parts I believe they even have a different part number.

THey also sell a CARBON fiber version of the grille from Garage vary :)

And the price is astronomical on the part and shipping alone. Carbon version just makes it more expensive.

I do love the way it looks though -.-

Yea the price on that grille the CF one is more than the Autoexe front bumper.
I like how it looks but the amount of space it opens up screams front mount or something to be added up there. Without it all you see is your big ole reinforcement bar.

Make your own, that's my plan, plan to take a stock insert cut all of it out, mess around with designs and have a carbon guy mold one in carbon fiber and start production, it's a simple process and you won't pay retail...

I think there is another thread on it and a place I believe in florida sells it.. IF I find it I will post it back here

jdm_dudebro 02-09-2014 09:09 PM

I installed the grill with a friend and found it really frustrating. I'm not happy with the placement. Told Nextmod to keep their 100 bucks to post a diy saying it fits perfect. It was far from perfect. But I tried. Apparently they don't sell them anymore?

But the mz's lip kit isn't half as bad.

They are called rodspeed out of Miami. They are $285 +40 shipped. You can pay a extra 85 for paint. Said they fit but needs a bracket. Not sure of how true that is but I been thinking about getting one to feed more air into my front mount and feed my inner rice.

Is there any truth to the grin being slightly different widths on the 2010-11 vs 12-13?

I just measured my '13 as best I could with a tape measure (convex surface and laser diodes in the way) and it's very close to 51". I'm curious if the earlier Pu's are wider.

Do they have an online platform? I've Google'd it and might have come across their website but it seems as though they only provide two services such as window tinting. I'd really like to believe the rodspeed front grille alternative is available because I'd easily spend more money to have a properly fitted grille.
