The northern Cars 4 Attachment(s) So Im doing a full detail on my car the other day and what do my eyes spy but some rust on the door hinges! Now keep in mind that I live in upstate New York, winters suck, & theres salt everywhere. BUT...Im a freak about weekly washing and this is a 2011 vehicle! Im curious if any of the other norther MS3's or even the sea side based ones for that matter have come across premature rusting on the hinges. At this point Im trying to decide on what I should do about it (let it be or deal with the hassle of the dealer). Thoughts, Tactics, & opinions welcomes.... |
Living up north you will see lots of rust underneath the car on the suspension components, brackets, etc. The body panels are galvanized and will withstand rust better although the painted undercarriage parts the salt will burn through fast and rust. I Lived in New England and MN most of my life, now I am in FL, no salt, no rust. The only way around it is to sand the rust off, re-paint and undercoat the metal parts underneath and wash the undercarriage a lot in the winter time- this is what I did. For your door hinges, just spray them with WD-40 or a light oil and the rust will come off, and lubricate them periodically. |
They should have coating of lithium grease every 30K or so, per maniual. I would lube em up. |
Oh She's lubed regularly! :3some: Thing is its only 10months old w/ 9000 miles on it. I'm cool with undercarriage parts getting a rust coat on them, it's anticipated. I'm not cool with painted parts like door hinges getting rusty though. I'll mention it to the stealership when it goes in for it's next free oil change and see what they say. |
Forget the dealerhsip oil changes and do it yourself. I wouldn't let the dealership do my oil changes if they paid me. I went in for them to look at a concern a while ago and they changed my oil without asking or talking to me about it, because they said they saw the mileage was over 5,000. They then expected me to pay for that and for then rotating my wheels/tires, which they also did not talk to me about. I did not and will never go back there again. When I checked later, they overfilled the engine by about a quart.....which I drained out. |
