(Thread Starter) | Neutral : -1 score Then, Subaru introduced a revved up standard WRX that had nearly the power of the STI, without the electronic gadgetry and enough room to modify and improve to my tastes without destroying my budget. However, for the small creature comforts that I had grown to appreciate, I found myself getting closer and closer to the $30k mark that I simply refused to pay. The 2008.5 MS3 GT I purchased helped satisfy my cravings for a sporty car with enough power to handle our extremely boring road layouts, and instantly satisfied my curiosity towards owning a Forced Induction (specifically, Turbocharged) vehicle. As the 2010+ MS3 was introduced, I found my criticisms in my previous vehicle had dissipated with the new model. It was until I actually finally drove a modified Subaru (an old model Forester 2.5XT) that I finally understood it all. Why so many MS3 owners have transitioned into a newer Subaru, and why the MS3 will ultimately be held back from greatness that it's potentially capable of reaching: 1) AWD I think this goes without saying, that FWD will always have some extreme setbacks. Whether it's the lack of traction in high HP applications, the lack of grip in touring car settings (overwhelming the front tires to steer and power the vehicle forward), or the fact that it lacks any and ALL sporty feel. There's just something amazing about AWD that I appreciate very much now. Similar to how people choose to drive Manual Transmission vehicles because of their ability to control what the car is doing - AWD is absolutely an extension of this. Instead, with FWD, you're simply commanding the car to rocket forward and instead receive torque-steer, lack of traction, lack of true forward movement that is so naturally felt in a RWD/AWD car. For a car company that is so heavily inspired by creating "driver's cars", the MS3 will forever be burdened by it's FWD platform that is almost immediately, a pain in the ass. 2) Platform Similarities Almost all Subaru's share parts with one another. This makes parts not only much cheaper to purchase, but also much more interesting to modify as certain vehicle parts can be obtained and installed to create a truly unique vehicle. Take for example, the Subaru Forester and the WRX. Some have purchased OEM WRX take-off suspensions and installed on their Forester since the vehicle shares the same chassis. At the same token, WRX owners will purchase OEM Forester take-off parts to lift the vehicle for off-road purposes. No judgement to the owner and it's interests, just the fact you can do it is cool. Also, the list of aftermarket support is ungodly long and with lower prices. We can't even get someone to make a decent axleback for our cars without it being damn near $1,000 (not counting Ultimate Racing who's quality and fitment seems questionable from what i've read). 3) Owner Loyalty Not only do Subaru owners turn into repeat-buyers for long periods of time, their resale value continues to shock me. The vehicle is extremely durable and hard to imagine what could go wrong. Even a modified Forester 2.5XT with 90,000+ miles, with an incredibly stiff clutch and probably in desperate need of a turbo rework, this thing pulled harder than I could fathom comparably speaking to my MS3. It was sad really, that my respectable MS3 couldn't touch the feel and power of this considerably "old" yet modified car. And when I say modified, I mean suspension and air intake baffle removed. Not stage 3. After simply a few hours in it, I found myself wanting to get back in the car for another ride around the block but I was reminded of the fact we were entering the peak of summer and so was the gas prices. And rather than mindlessly waste my friends $4.00+/gal gas, I called it quits. But I found myself standing back and thinking "That was the most fun I had in a long time." Instead, I jump back into my brand new car and wonder why it feels emotionless, compared to the rumble, growl and punch of that Boxer-engine Subaru. Am I ready to take a loss in spite of my commitment to owning a Subaru one day? I'm not exactly sure yet, but if the opportunity presents itself, I can't honestly say I'd pass it up. The thrill of owning new cars is only fun to certain people, especially those who cycle through new cars every few years. But with my intentions of modifying and appreciating a vehicle, it seems a used Subaru might one day be in my future. Now I get why so many have traded up.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Ench spes ses Lenny? Lave es? Tarse me qhosa! (armenian) I have, but honestly, it's no different than the godforsaken turbo smoking and engine blowing we've had around here. Modded or not. A failure is inevitable, and my observations were looking at the brand as a whole, not entirely just at the new models only.

but anyways.. we all bought the ms3 for the value.. Before I got my gen2 (prior gen1 owner aswell) I could of gone wrx or evo... better performance, funner stock and modded, bigger aftermarket.. but i guess i couldn't resist a new 11' ms3 for only 20.7K.. Even the new wrx can only be talked down to only like 23-24K.. that said.. MS3 still can be fun.. especially modded and get the suspension just right...If Ms3 was 300lbs light it would be blast aswell... in saying that the funniest car I've owned was a fwd se-r specv, suspension mods made the car< should never of sold it. | Not Ranked : 0 score too expensive. you could pay full price, like a moron (me) for an ms3, 24k and still have 9k left over for mods. (vs OP's 33k) and with 9k in mods your shit would be tons faster than a stock sti, even around corners if you modded right (including driver mods for the corners). Thus why all of us DIDNT buy an sti.

| Neutral : +1 score i can see where your post comes from but at the same time there are valid points that are kinda not valid. for example i am a nissan guy in ten years i have owned 3 b14's. none broke really, one was totalled and the other i sold to get into a manual two door without the hassle of a tranny swap, and the third is my valued and trusty se-r i daily drive. I love nissan dont care what wheel drive they are personally and have no qualms buying another. hell i am looking at a brand new as we speak. i also fell in love with my speed and mazda. the interior cant be touched, i love the looks and its a super bang for your buck. its my family car and its my garage car lol. as for resell when a car starts at like 30 of course it will be worth more then a car starting ~23k. i got nothing against subaru and i got nothing against mitsu (yes phil i prefer the evo brother darkness), but i wouldnt trade my mazda for either in a heartbeat. its just sadening that so many owners end up with this i hate my car, why is it not faster, why isnt it all wheel drive etc mentality. you come to the mazda site and complain how it will never be another car and wonder why the reception is less then stellar. hell i see the majority are using the speed as stepping stone/ right now car and thats a shame for the wonderful vehicles we call mazda. in short for lenny -you knew what you were getting into on the test drive why shocked now? -age old will always be something better -dont knock a great car that does what it was built to do -do srt-4 and cobalt ss have this many pipe dreams or are they happy with those cars? -i love my car and i am sorry you lost the love for yours ![]() stop pissing in my garden

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Let me clarify before I basically piss off everyone who still loves the MS3.. Having two speeds is entirely why I still haven't owned a Subaru yet. The value for the money, along with the capabilities at it's price are unheard of and unmatched. Maybe I shouldn't have bought brand new if I planned to mod again? That's a personal decision that i'll live with. At least it's not a $30k+ car that i'd feel should probably be left alone. I was just simply amazed at how much fun the car was, and how much the MS3 could be made better if similar changes were made. Hell, for what the car is capable of, adding AWD and notching the price up some, would have ultimately made this the perfect car in my eyes. Take the R32 for example. Beautiful engine note, AWD, seats to die for. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes. Upcoming R20 Golf? Oh baby. It doesn't take much to make a knock out recipe. And the MS3 is literally 9.5/10 for me, with the exception of such minor yet ultimately major things that I observed. For the total ass-raping of a loss i'd take, I will gladly take my cleaner interior and extra techie bullshit for a barebones Subaru. But if the opportunity presents itself, I may jump. Jus sayin. No offense to anyone.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I looked at Subarus, but the WRX transmission is garbarge and STi's are overpriced. I drove a few of them and after driving a mazdaspeed I obviously took the speed. I think you get move for your money with a mazda than you do a subaru.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Nice thread BTW. So where should I start? I'll start with my bottom line. Currently paying $350/month for my new 2010 speed3. When I look it this way I'll say I'm paying half of what the Subis guys are paying as car note. This makes me fell super super Happy ![]() So far was running stock until i added 2 weeks ago the Cobb SRI. I'll say dang, dang, dang, The speed3 is fast. When you hit the throttle pretty hard in 1 and 2 gear (I'll not say floor it), the car just push you back in the seat. Dang dude this car is fast. I took my Genpu for a driver eduction day on the track, 2 weeks ago, and I should recommend every one to do so just to see what potential our car have. There is an incredible amount of power on the speed3 even stock. I'll just encourage every speed3 owner to take his car to the track. You probably change your mind if you are thinking about getting a STI. (WRX is really a POS). On the track, I was so concerned to not push the car since I didn't know his limit and I asked my instructor to drive my speed3 for 2 or 3 laps, just to have an idea of where the limits on this car are. Dang I almost pi'ed in my pans when He was racing the Genpu. FYI, he drives a Porshe I think, He abusing my car brake that mental barrier in me, since my heart was hearding when the car was running in high RPM (normal, new car and never abused it ). On the next laps, I was really fast. I just remember him saying dam, woooh you pick up really on speed. Now I want to add something any MS3 owner my think about twice, if tempted to trade in for an STI. At least for me I always see it this way: I'm learning to be fast and to be fast safely, means to keep 4 wheels on the street and the Mazdaspeed3 is the perfect platform for this without braking the bank and without having to file bankruptcy later on down the road. I'll like to get an STI, but I fear If I do get one, NOW, I won't know how to handle the tremendous power that car puts on the wheels. I may want to start on a little platform into motor sport and racing without braking the bank and without going bankrupt. And this is where I feel the Speed3 has his place in that market segment. I'll highly recommend tuning the Speed3 in the following order: SRI/CAI, RMM, Acess Port, Down Pipe - Stg2, some good performance tires (spec Z1 or NT05 ). With such a set up you have the basis to explore unexpected power you"ll never thought this car is capable of. So for now, since I don't know how to beat the hell out of my car (race), I'm still learning with the speed3 an there is a lot to learn with this car. After a while, I'll probably need to upgrade to something much faster like an STI (500 + HP) or may be a GT-R (why not). But for now I wouldn't know how to safely keep my Genpu 4 wheels on the street. On the top of that, having to pay a little car not now, is the best strategy for me to not get into a depth spiral so I can dream of coming home with a GT-R and my name of the registration paperwork, in the next 10 years, once my house is paid off. This is what I can say to this hot topic.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I look at it this way.... I wanted a WRX or STI before I even thought about looking at a speed3. Hell I only looked at my speed3 because it was at the dealership connected to the Subaru dealership. I wanted a Subaru, I still want a Subaru. So why would I buy a speed3 then? It was a better value for my money. Im not rich. Value of the car won my sale. Simple as that. The speed3 is what it is. It does what it was designed to do well. I actually think the speed3 is a bit more exhilarating to drive on spirted straight runs. Im happy with my purchase for the time being. If I manage to make more money...Ill get myself a STI.

| Not Ranked : 0 score 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. 9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day. 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. 20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. 24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. Genesis 2 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. Adam and Eve 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. 5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[b] and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams[c] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the LORD God formed a man[d] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. i thought since we are all posting long ass useless shit...might as well go with the classics of said uselessness

| Not Ranked : 0 score Pointless thread is pointless, but I digress. The STI will run you ~$13000 more than a similarly spec'd MS3. The STI drives significantly better because it lacks fail wheel drive. What's there not to understand?? You bought a cheaper car and it will drive like one. But in my opinion, and the opinion of thousands more on this forum, the MS3 is a damn good deal for the money. And besides, there is no Mazdaspeedforums in Subie world.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Well I was about to pull the trigger on a 2006-2007 wrx. I liked just about everything about it until I decided to look at some competion. After looking at what I could get from a mazdaspeed3 compared to what my money could get from a 2006 or 2007 wrx it was an easy choice. From what I've read a gen1 msp3 is quicker and is better value in every way except 0-60 but to get a quick launch on a wrx requires a high rev clutch drop. This is a big problem on AWD cars because all the stress will be on the drivetrain many people talk about blowing their 5speed and doing a 3k sti tranny swap. I couldn't never have fun if I was always worried about breaking my transmission. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score For most people, it' probably just comes down to budget. Those who can't afford to drop $30k+ on an STi/EVO are going to want to get as much performance as they can for their dollar, and thats where the MS3 comes in. The car performs at such a higher caliber than it's price tag. When I bought my MS3 I hadn't been into the whole car thing in a long time. I had a regular 3 that shit the bed, needed a new car, the MS3 was cheap, so I figured I would get something sporty. Once I got it the bug mod hit me for the first time in years, and it hit HARD. The MS3 was very good to me and I loved the value to performance ratio, but it has too many setbacks for my patience level. Small aftermarket support is first. I know things are ramping up with different companies, but I want my parts, and I want them now. The little quirks about the car pissed me off. Ex: a fuel pump so weak you need to spend $400 or more right off the bat in order to (in some people's cases) even run an SRI safely. And of course: fail wheel drive. Choice was a wheel-hopping bitch of a time, or installing a RMM and feeling like the car was going to vibrate itself to death (I had the TRZ delrin), but still get no traction through the first few gears. Now I don't have to deal with that ever again. And I mean hell man, there is just something bad luck about trying to squeeze real performance out of the car. Not a single MS3 owner in the 11s? The first MS6 just finally hit 11s? What kind of crap is that? Yea sure, if you buy an MS3 you will save $9k or more which can go towards mods, but even with that $9k you are never going to be able to touch any moderately-modded STi/EVO? That's a hard pill to swallow. Lets the groans rain in.

Adding AWD & some of the other items people always mention would likely boost the Speed3 into the $32K+ range - where Mazda would likely sell 10 units/year. The following on the 3 is strong, but will never match the Subie/Evo crowd - including the aftermarket. This car is still a hellacious bang for the buck - I think Mazda knows where the limit is. They've yet to build a Speed model (I've had them all) that eclipeses $30K and I wonder if they ever will. | |

Anyway, you will always lust after a faster car, but eventually come to your senses and buy the one that best suits your real lifestyle and income level. I took a look at what I can afford, thought about what I really wanted out of a car, and went for the MS3 despite knowing that it's a FWD. Paying for the AWD just wasn't worth it for me. Plus STIs are still running the old EJ257 engine with hyperbrittle pistons... been hearing of occasional reports of busted ringlands and other shit on stock and even stage 1 maps. Seriously, those busted ringland threads appear once a month or so on IWSTI and NASIOC.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I don't really have much to contribute here (as usual) but I will just say that when I was shopping around for my car I was considering an MS3, a WRX, and a GTI. After test driving them all, I liked the MS3 more. The WRX's I drove (2007 Sedan, 2008 hatch) felt heavy, slow, very soft in the corners, and just less fun to drive. Plus they seemed like older cars based on the interior design. MS3 felt faster and more agile. So anyway, Subaru...meh.

| Not Ranked : 0 score My family and I have been repeat Mazda owners for a long while. Value is definitely at the top of the list when we list the advantages of these cars. My first brand new car was a Protege5. I guess that was the gateway drug, because since the P5, I had a 2007 Mazda3 and now finally the 2010 MS3. My friend had an STi at one point before he spun it off the road in a snow storm. I had the opportunity to drive that thing home one night as DD and it definitely tore up the pavement in a real gut-wrenching way. But one thing that struck me when I got into the STi was how cheap that interior felt. Ugly plastics, boring controls, loose fit and finish, just like on the base model. I realize that many buy this car for the mere speed/power factor and probably don't care about the interior as much, but many people do, and that is where Mazda has been very successful as of late. (FWIW, I have owned a Subaru, albeit a 1986 XT cheese wedge.) |
