| Not Ranked : 0 score Got the MS3 to carry my drums and be somewhat of a sleeper. It is plenty fast enough to get me around/put a smile on my face. There will always be something faster/better. Always. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I had an 02 WRX sedan. Blows the MS3 out of the water. But they are 2 completely different cars. If I could I would trade for an STi right now. Subaru makes a hatch version too that can carry your drums just as well as the Ms3. lol.

| Not Ranked : 0 score What power mods did you do to your ms3 Silver??.....First and foremost I love subies..I just do, the STi is one of my fav. cars period. How modified what that forester you rode in lol??? Cause my 300 whp bolted ms3 feels much faster than quite few subies ive driven in, and that includes stage 2 2005 sti, intake 2008 sti,2009 wrx stock. I never rode in a turbo forester, they can be made mean though. The 2009 wrx I drove felt about the same as my stock ms3, cept the ms3 had more tq...but it did make power up to 6kish, so thats better than 56-5700 like stock ms3..the tranny was very notchy..clutch smooth though. All in all, it didnt feel any faster, or handle any better than my ms3. But as always, with AWD, it did launch better, handle power better, therefore you gotta love awd. That is the main advantage the foresters-wrx's legacys have over the ms3. The Sti is different animal, but for 35k, it better. I totaly agree that the ms3 isnt the greatest car in the world lol...when you buy this car, you need to understand its fwd. Its made for people who want a daily driver with some get up and go, not all out performance car. But the wrx engine is not closed deck, samethign with the forester..that ej255 doesnt like going above 350 whp...it can, but many tuners and suby engine builders start stressing hard, about upgrading atleast the pistons. Also the ringland prab. is there. Dont make a comment about how it doesnt compare to the blown engines here, cause ummm yes it does...Im a suby fan..I troll thier forums alot!!!...And my tuner is Tim Bailey@Surgeline, so between my conversations with him and his staff who tune ALOT OF FUCKIN subies, I can say that the piston issues happen quite often, but a good protune+e85 goes along way with helping this. And if you have noticed our engines are not blowing up anymore, very rare anyways. Thats because better tuning is available, better information, more fueling answers ect. Yet..subaru continues to put cast pistons in thier boxer engines, and suppy a stock shitty tune. Thier not perfect either. The Sti has brembo brakes a 6speed tranny that will handle 600 whp easily, great suspension+performance..but for 10+k more than the ms3, it better and it should, yet it still has cast pistons and its nor perfect either. Our car is quite the performer for the money, I dont think that the Subaru Forester will out perform a ms3,unless major suspension work and turbo upgrade, and thats beyond stage 2...unless Foresters are alot better than the 09+ wrx's?? cause ive done quite bit seat time in those. Buy what you want, shit Ill end up in a sti eventrully I believe, Iam hoping for maybe 2013, think thats when the new boxer engine goes into the wrxs and stis. But Im really hoping for subaru to get away from the cast pistons.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I have lots of friends with WRX's and a few STI's/EVO's. The ones with the STI/EVO's just love their cars as well as I love the power of them also. Hell my one buddies Evo is 565whp and runs 9's. But my friends wth the WRX's (04-09's) really aren't happen with them stock. They have all pretty much converted them into STI's with turbo/intercooler swaps all the way even including STI interior. The 5 speed is also a huge dissapointment for these guys and since most have opted to do a $4-8k tranny swap for the STI 6speed. An STI would be great to have but a WRX not so much since they need so much money put into them to really be a blast and that money is much better spent on the MS3 since it already has what your wasting that extra money on to get. AWD is pretty much all the MS3 needs but then the price point would probably take this car out of the running for a lot of people.

Yeah Its pretty interesting Lex. I try to respect other peoples opinions, I just liek to hear why they have that opinion. stating that a 02 wrx blows the ms3 out of the water, I first think of things like this- The bugeyes had the 2.0 liter boxer that made 227hp, about 180@the wheels on dynojet. It had fairly fragile tranny, if you took car of it, didnt launch it hard, stayed within reasonable power limits, it does hold up ok..but its no way nearly as strong as the ms3 tranny, and most suby owners end up getting harden gearsets or sti tranny swaps if they got the money. And those older 2.0 liter engines did not like being pushed too hard...go find bugeyes making 300whp or more, most of them are on built blocks. Your running on borrowed time if you go big turbo big power on stock ej20 series block. the bugeye rex's can be some really neat cars, alot of guys swap sti turbos in them and make decent power..then others put shitload of money with cosworth block-rods pistons-sti tranny, and then the car becomes a monster..but thats thousands and thousands of dollars.

![]() First page alone. If you go to their Engine and Drivetrain > 2.5L factory motor subforum, there was a recent post (May 19) by a guy (Franko) with busted ringlands at 15k miles. I thought the MS3 pistons were also cast, it's just that the larger bore and shorter stroke of the subies causes the problem? In any case, I don't hate subies or anything. One day I will end up in an AWD turbo hatch and it might well be a WRX or something. Who knows what will be available in like 6 - 10 years? We'll see.

| Not Ranked : 0 score honestly this whole thing is so stupid. it's like asking, which would you rather have, herpes or aids? every performance oriented car will have different problems. it can be fast, good, or cheap, pick two. i've recently realized the immaturity of shit-talking other cars to prove a point about how great yours is. there is no 'best' car for 100% of people, so talking crap about other cars is pretty pointless. every car will do something better than a different car.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I'm not sure the OP is actually shit talking about the MS3, it's more like he's not satisfied with FWD and the Mazda sounds and feels that he might have been happier with an AWD subie. But meh, grass is always greener on the other side, just know when to stop bleeding money on a depreciating asset that moves your ass from A to B.

You honestly could have got an 04-05 STI for around 18K or a 03-05 EVO for the same price. You should have looked around (cars.com or autotrader.com) before you pulled the trigger on a ms3. Good luck next time. |

I think quite a few people nailed it on the head, I know Iam included in some of the statements. I would love a evo or sti, but like many who cant afford those 2, you either go ms3/cobalt ss/srt4...cheap speed...but the ms3 has nice interior, decent room for passengers,so I got it. Im aware of the used older 2004-2005 stis&evos that can be had for 18-24k, but Iam not comfortable buying a car that is more than likly been modded and driven hard with 50k miles, no thanks. Anyways comparing cars always ends up getting nasty, too many people are biased and proud, and they dont look at the big picture, or open minded enough. The same people who my say shit on a sti now, but then say 3 years from now says fuck it and buys one, is now saying that the sti is better than anything else, well because he owns one, so ofcourse its the best. I guessed I was just surprised about the op's statement on a older slightly modded forester out performing a ms3. I know forester guys are making 240-250 whp with the vf39, and 270-300 whp with the vf43 turbo fully bolted. But OP was refering to stock turbo slightly modded, prab. around 210-230 whp. 03-07 Foresters have the 224-230bhp 2.5 in it...and the stock suspension is ok at best..but in his opinion it was ALOT better than a ms3, so that has me puzzled, but meh. Anyways the op wants to try out a different platform, nothing wrong with that. Wish him the best luck in regards to that. But the ms3 is one of the best performance bargains on the market.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score It's not that I hate it... Cash is king, we all know this. I'm not willing to put myself in a worse position, financially, over a car. My observation is simply that I understand what's so attractive about the Subaru world, and I felt they had certain recipes that could have been adopted on the MS3 to ultimately make it a force to be reckoned with. Hell, I am surprised sometimes that even the RX-8 was never taken a step further with some MAZDASPEED treatment. With that being said, i'm extremely happy with my upgrade from my 1st Gen, but AWD is sick, and i'd love to have that. Simple as that really.
It's not like I was raving about it's Stage 3 capabilities. This was just a tastefully yet basic modified Forester which opened my eyes to Subaru, AWD and how fun they can be to own and drive.

| Not Ranked : 0 score "It was sad really, that my respectable MS3 couldn't touch the feel and power of this considerably "old" yet modified car. And when I say modified, I mean suspension and air intake baffle removed. Not stage 3."- Silver Ecstasy True sir, you did not say the word "outperform", but when I read this^^^.....thats basicly the vibe Iam getting. A 03-07 forester with modded intake is making 190ish whp, combine that with awd to put the power down smoothly, and some suspension work, and I would be willing to bet its a fun ride But to say a ms3 cant touch it, I would have to disagree. Im glad you had fun in the forester, and with a sti tmic, turboback, walbro fp,intake,vf43 turbo +tune=270-300 whp, can be quite quick....some guys are running built 2.5 blocks with forged internals, big turbo 400+ whp..makes it a hella of a sleeper. But thats a lot of money. Im just carious did you ever mod your ms3?..they respond well to bolt ons..some suspension work, grippier tires?..take it to the track? It will never be awd, but it can be a fun car as well. Least IMO it is.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I posted somewhere on here about how I came from a Subaru to my ms3. 2007 Forester XT, bought it brand new. 3rd gear grendaded on me ~4months, 6800miles after purchase. Took me a month of fighting with SOA to warranty the repairs. It was very enlightening talking with the service manager at my dealer. He didn't bullshit me, showed me all the documentation from corporate on what to look for and told me flat out Subaru was tired of repairing their 5speed trans's on wrx's & foresters. Had the repairs done goodwilled and was told I was SOL if it happened again. Gee, sure as shit just over a year later second gear let go on me. Had the repairs done out of pocket and car was gone not even a week later. Both times I wasn't even beating the piss out of it, just driving spirited to work. I've thought about going back to a Subaru, but never will after my experience and how I was treated. Oh, first time car was bone stock except for some suspension work and wheels/tires. Second time it was stage1. Pictures below are of the first time while it was apart at Subaru. ![]() |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Having owned a few AWD cars (GSX Mitsu, TSI AWD Talon) and driving the MS3, a few things are apparent: 1- FWD weighs a lot less, feels like a go kart vs AWD 2- Much much less drive train loss 3- Highway pulls FTW in MS3 The only good thing about AWD is the ability to put power down. Its heavier, its a parasite when it comes to AWHP vs crank HP and drinks the gasoline no matter what vs MS3. I understand that each car has it's own market, but to say one is better than the other is purely dependent on what you value in a car. If you value 0-60, then AWD... if you value highway pull, lightness vs AWD, then MS3. If i could afford an Evo, gladly buy one. But not for 43k in Canada plus 13% tax. I'll take my 32k MS3 for its value in HP, handling, fuel economy when i want it, very decent interior. HIDs, LED tails... need i go on? |

| Not Ranked : 0 score When you get the Sti you're going to see a Nissan GTR and wish you had that. When you get a GTR you may see a Veyron and want that. There's always room for improvement. But you stick to what you can afford. Your argument would be valid if the Sti was in the same price range. These are 2 different cars. You can buy a 23K MS3 and add 10K in mods and make it a lot faster than a stock Sti. You spent the same amount of money in a car that has a much better interior. And if you ever decide to sell the car you can stock it out and sell mods individually for a pretty high percentage of what you paid for it. So to each his own.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Having owned 3 subaru's prior to the purchase of my speed3, i can say many things. FWD is not as great. I can also tell you the 5 spd from the WRX is junk. They'll blow up under too much power, improper launch, the list goes on. The ring land issue is common among the new 2.5 litre turbo motors. I went from a 02 wrx wagon to an 07 wrx to an 07 STi. The STi is obviously the better car but for the money, it's out of reach for most. Having been trying to put a decent chunk of change in the bank, yet still retaining something decently fast and quite decent at handeling, I ended up with my speed3. Can I tell you it is as fast, no, it's not. Even with the mods my STi had (turbo back and aggressive tune) it was for sure faster than my speed3. Shrug. It is what it is. Also, this thread is full of fail
