Default OEM windshield quality

So after owning my speed3 for 3 weeks/2k miles, I got a crack in my windshield. I was planning on having it replaced with OEM Mazda glass, but now I have read some posts on another forum that seemed to indicate that the OEM glass might just suck at resisiting rocks. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience that would suggust that the OEM glass is weaker than normal as in that case I will just use aftermarket glass. I wanted to stay with the OEM glass because I know sometimes the aftermarket stuff can be crap.

I had mine replaced because a rock cracked my stocker. Just went with the knock off safelight replacement. 2.5 years later still holding up like a champ without an issue.

It turns out I'm paying the same either way, so I'll just go with the OEM stuff if I have the option. Thanks for the input.

What about replacing a windshield when you have the tech package?

It's not cheap, there's a thread that talks about it already, if you don't need the rain sensing shit then get a reg windshield. I have a big crack in mine right now from some dbag that used the middle turn lane as an actual lane and caused a rock to crack my windshield bad...it's cool I ran his ass off the road, so im not a mad.

Yeah, I have the tech package and will be paying $500 for the replacement. My other quote from a different shop was $487, and the person couldn't tell me if it was OEM glass or not. I would just leave it but it bugs me to no end to be driving a new car with a crack in the windshield. The tech package is a good point-I wonder if anyone even makes aftermarket glass for it.

Yeah, it sucks. My dedutible is $500 which I might look at changing in the near future, and all of the quotes I was getting from non-dealer places still would have required that much out of pocket.

That's about how much an actual regular windshield should be, my quote is 250$. Guess what I did instead of a windshield, just bought wheels and springs, granted the crack irritates the fuck out of me but I wanted that other shit first. I'll get it replaced after I dip my car white in a few weeks.

Haha ya, I wish I woulda spent the money on something else, but mine was pretty bad.
Started off at the lower right of my windshield, and just from driving it for a day or to, it crawled all the way up to about 3 inches from where the windshield met my roof.

Mine starts at the bottom of the windshield in my view area, comes up and over about 3 feet to the passenger side...it's huge.

Just slap some jb weld on the crack, and sandwich that with some good'ol fashion duct tape. BAM, another 10k miles worth of life in your windshield.

Well WTF? I'd like to know how you guys are getting $250 quotes seeing as my insurance agent said safelight was $500 as well. Are those quotes due to a low deductible? I might just call safelight myself and see what they tell me then. Thanks for all the info.

um don't go through insurance, safelight uses insurance so they'll mark that shit up to make a killing. Just go to a reputable collision place and ask them. Bottom line, it would be stupid to go through insurance for a windshield unless you have no deductible. Kinda like those "free" windshield repair people on the side of the road, you think they sit out there bc they like helping people, fuck no they take insurance.

If a windshield is hit anywhere near the edge you have a huge risk of a crack developing and spreading quick. The edges are where the "flex" is in the glass, which is why even the tiniest chip can grow quite rapidly.

And for what its worth, I would get regular calls from safelite asking for prices on OEM glass since Aftermarket isnt always available.

Exactly, you should see how tiny the chip is that my crack is coming out of. I was dumb and waited to long to get it repaired and came out one day after work to find a 2 foot crack, now its almost to the edge of the other side.

a little advise. If any company tells you its OEM their full of shit. 99% of the time its a generic window brand. can't think of the name most are. and in most cases it will NOT have the slight window tint at the top of the window like the OEM does.

Idc if the window is oem or not, the company could be named imgayandlovebuttsexx inc, as long as it protects me and doesnt shatter in a wreak or if something hits it and act like a windshield is supposed to, im good.

I got quotes from Safelite, and a place that claimed to beat safelites price by 15% (but somehow ended up wanting $100 more)
Both places were a rip off.

Like its been said, just find a reputable windshield place in your area and get a quote. I wouldnt even report it to your insurance

My OEM windshield fell victim to some mean ass tree sap. I got it replaced at Techna Glass. It was around 260 bucks. The quality is not the best though. I don't know where you are at but they are in the Jiffy Lubes here in NM.

I am actually having issue with a haze or a film in my window in the right hand lower corner and I have tried using vinegar to get rid of it with no luck, guess I am going to have to tell my service manager he is going to have to warranty a window for me.

My OEM glass was replaced after a year due to a large running crack. I got it replaced and the new one has 2 chips but still holding strong. I don't have any input on price because I have full glass coverage (FTMFW).

It is luck of the road. Find a rock, get a new windshield. My Mazda B3000 went through 6 in a year. Random rocks. My Speed 3 in almost 5 years and 77,000 miles, original. I have chips, like pin sized nicks that have been there for 60K miles, no problems. Best part of FL, free replacement.

I am being told by several places now that the only option for glass is OEM due to the rain sensor which is why the price is so high. Does anyone know for sure if non-OEM glass is made with the rain sensor?

feel your pain lol mine is cracked again and had safelite come out to repair it and literally 2 hours before they were supposed to get to my house i went out to get some smokes and something else hits it and sent the crack up and across the winsheild, safelite guy gets there and says i thought it was smaller than a dollar bill? needless to say im not dishing out another deductible for a winsheild until i get pulled over and have to get it signed off.

Well, I got a $0 glass deductible added to my insurance policy for a whopping $4 extra/month, so I won't ever have to worry about this again. Would have been nice if they told me I could do that BEFORE the rock hit the windshield....

Progressive. When she said $43 I was expecting it was a per month charge and then she said it was for the whole year and I couldn't believe it was that cheap.

In MA we get a free windshield every year courtesy of the Big Dig (Big construction project in Boston). Just had mine replaced in October and the rain and headlight sensors were all fucked up. Had them out yesterday and the guy just "reglued" the sensor in place. Fucker better work on next rain. Does anyone know for certain if the headlight sensor and rain sensor are in the same place? I get the impression from glass dude that the headlight sensor is not located at the top of the windshield like the rain sensor. Is it the little round thing on the dash.

I think the headlight sensor should be that little black dome on the dash, that's usally where they are located.
