Pinch seams made of jello?

So I decided it's finally time to put the snow tires on today.... Look up the jack points in the FSM, confirm it's the usual unibody pinch seam and grab my floor jack.

And the first pump that got the tires off the ground crushed the shit of the pinch seam on the drivers front, FML. Ended up using the flat spot right behind the pinch seam that the cross brace is bolted to and got the tire swap done.

Where do you guys jack your cars up without crushing the tin foil chassis? lol :chairshot:

On the bright side, the chassis is nice and stiff so I didn't have to jack up the rear separately.

You are supposed to put a block with a slot in it on your jack when using the pinch weldhttp://i430.photobucket.com/albums/q.../pwadapter.jpg

Ya I saw that on one of the 6 forums after some googling. Never had a vehicle that needed a block before.

Note to self, check MSF instead of the FSM from now on.

I picked up one of those hockey puck style deals.

I actually use the scissor jack since it has the notch.

I've jacked many speeds up using the pinch weld and never crushed one

a hockey puck with a groove cut in it (or a piece of wood) work great. Always use a jack stand or place one of the tires under the chassis... and I was pleased at both tires up on front jacking as well, only other car I’ve had do this was a mark 1 VW cabriolet that I have done extensive chassis stiffening on.

Ha I actually done the samething. I believe @JgamB; also had issues.

I just run it up some ramps and use the central lift points on the front and rear to get it on stands.

Yessir I was using the tri-point Y seam where they merge - they ended up folding nearly flat. Apparently a block with a notch is the smart way to do it, but oh well. It pushed my rocker skirts out maybe 1/8", it's not really perceptible unless you own the car.

Hockey Puck, no modification, just stick on jack, done.

The groove will make itself.

I actually already had a tool for the job prior to buying my Speed. I bought it from Flying Miata. I'm sure a puck or block work just as well, but I like having tools. Every time I lift the car, I prefer to have it level with all four in the air on stands (I rotate tires when I change oil anyway). I lift one side at a time using the tool rather than front or back. Makes life easier.

Thanks for the tips guys, I bookmarked that jack adapter in case I decide I'm too lazy to mod a hockey puck.

I don't know about your jacks but mine has something similar built into the lift point of it. Pretty handy
