Quieter Exhaust

Just bought an MS3 with a Cork Sport Resonator CBE. Too loud for me (mainly outside the car) - I just don't want/need the attention! I hear the stock exhaust is not much quieter so I'm wondering if there is another option.

Thanks

aackthpt 01-11-2017 12:43 PM

Listen to the Cobb exhaust too - I think it is a touch quieter than the CS, especially at idle/cruise. Custom is another possibilty - check out the @MD1032; and whoever he stole his idea from that I can't remember. But even with stock exhaust, I have been told my car is loud. This car was kinda born to wake shit up.

CWP_MS3 01-11-2017 12:49 PM

Its quieter but costs a ton. Fuck that noise. Literally.

MS3Shadow 01-11-2017 01:13 PM

Mangaflow is pretty quiet.

^^^ Would probably be your best bet.

I added a 3" silencer to the left exhaust tip on my CS.

Is the silence or something you just insert into the end of the temp? What brand is it and how much does it cost? Does it actually quiet down the exhaust and are there any issues with diverting the exhaust to the other side? Sorry for all the questions.

Bujwazay 01-11-2017 06:15 PM

I went with the racing beat CBE with UR resonated TP and it is plenty quiet around town with no drone at all. I am running the stock DP too for what it's worth...

Any side effects of putting a basic silencer on each tip? The think is it is fine inside, no droning, but when I have someone drive the car by me, it is way loud.

So did you just drill into the tip and the silencer to get it to stay? Any rattles?

I was actually fine with the CS exhaust (I also have a resonated test pipe). Just the right amount of sound until I upgraded the turbo and the drone just got to me. It's much quieter from the inside but people will still hear you coming. If you want an idea of how this sounds like just plug up the left pipe with some rags or something and start it up.

You need to drill a hole in the piping so you can bolt in the silencer. 3" silencers are not easy to come by... most of them are for 4" or 4.5" tips.

I wouldn't install on both tips... installing one won't kill performance but I'm sure two will. I would look for a stock exhaust if you want quiet.

I do get a rattle at cold start but that goes away.

I agree with a few others, Magnaflow for sure. Sounds great, nice and deep, great under WOT, and quiet when cruising. I have stock downpipe, ultimate racing test pipe, and magnaflow catback. I find it to be too quiet unfortunately. Sounds amazing, just not enough volume for me, personally. Worth looking into!

Get a UR if that's what you're into. lol

Jonb82 01-12-2017 05:53 AM

Get the CS unresonated and just roll windows down and turn the radio up!

The stock exhaust is MUCH quieter than corksport...CS is one of the loudest out there.

I'll do a straight trade swap with you if you're near by or within a reasonable distance to me

tec_41 01-12-2017 09:08 AM

The stock exhaust is very tame, even with a test pipe.

I have the CNT catback and a test pipe. It's still pretty quiet but has a great tone to it. Quieter than most from what I'm told.

Agreed, stock exhaust is not that loud. Aftermarket your best bet is probably Magnaflow. But this is advice from a man running catless on a CPE Triton...I have probably lost some hearing over the last couple of years. Worth it.

I'll second this, catless CPE is loud, all the time.

CONFIRMED!

Pekoe1111 01-12-2017 11:29 AM

I called Corksport and they said either go back to stock or put a resonator in the mid-pipe. Sounds like a couple a hundred bucks to do that.

Where are you located? I may be able to help out for....free

Vermont - too far from you! Thanks for the offer.

Meet halfway for some exhaust swapping and butt touching. :P

Yeah, there is no subtle with it. It's kind of like BLURAAAAWWWWWRRRRRRRRRR I'M COMING THROUGH!

Also worth nothing, it sounded mean as hell and awesome before the manifold. Once I went equal length runners it lost significant sound quality. These cars don't quite get the subaru rumble, but I kinda feel their pain now once they go equal length and have it sound like shit. Oh well, still worth it.

I wish! I got this one pretty cheap, I couldn't justify paying over 1000$ for a catback, otherwise I would for sure buy the CS or UR. Goddamn currency exchange rate. -_-

g00s3y 01-13-2017 05:58 AM

If you aren't going to be looking to push crazy HP, just get a stock exhaust. Cheapest option, and you can remove/add mufflers/resonators depending on how loud you want it.

I did a round trip from Raleigh to Philly and back in a day to pick up cheap parts for my gen1 when I had it....not particularly keen on doing it again

Yeah, getting a bit old for those long distance runs...

impossible 01-13-2017 11:47 PM

Equal length always sounded better to me. I hated the gurgle/rumble that most Speed owners and Subie fans jizz over.

Pekoe1111 01-14-2017 01:31 PM

When I just started it up, I noticed that the driver side pipe makes more noise.

eliwwjd 01-14-2017 07:12 PM

I love the gurgle sound! With what catback can I get a close gurgle sound? I was listening to cobb and its pretty close, the only problem is price

Why would the driver side pipe be louder?

The drivers side doesn't go through the second resonator unless you have the version that doesn't have a resonator on axle back section.

How far did you put the 3" silencer in? Am I correct the end furthest in is not supposed to touch the insides of the pipe? Did you secure with a nut and bolt, and do you recommend one or two - one on each side? Last question: Ho did you start the drill hole on such a hard, round metal surface? Lots of questions...

Thanks

Look at the pic closely. The silencer gets installed about 3.5-4 inches in. Make the hole past the double wall exhaust tip. I used a M6 bolt and nut. You can add another nut on top of that or use a lock washer to make it more secure. To prevent the drill tip from wandering you lay down a layer or two of masking or duct tape and get the hole started.

Just ordered the silencer in your link, then went and put a rag in the driver side pipe to test sound. Went for a ride - perfect! I know it will not completely close the pipe like the rag, but looking forward to the silencer quieting it down a bit.

Thanks.

As others have mentioned, silencer "sounds" like the way to go. FWIW I put a silencer in my last aftermarket exhaust and it took all the attentions away. Made it quiet like a purring kitten. Then, on the plus side, when I wanted to sound like a noisy douche, remove silencer and VRRRROOOOM!. Complete flexibility. Should give the quiet needed here.

Thanks!

Got the same silencer from Enjuku and put it in this morning - perfect! It wasn't until I looked underneath and realized how most of the exhaust went straight out the driver's side tip - until I put the silencer! Now most gets routed through the resonator to the other side and quietes it down jus enough to keep the snarl.

The 3" silencer that hides inside the tip was the key - thanks for this low-cost solution!

MunkieJunkie 01-20-2017 08:59 AM

I bought mine with a Cobb catback. It's definitely quiet, but doesn't sound very aggresive. For the money I'd definitely go with something else, maybe stick a resonator in there like others suggested.

downs 01-20-2017 09:18 PM

I don't have anything to compare it to but my exhaust is still stock and I find it to be just about right. A little burble at idle, ok sound (inside)when on throttle and at cruise throttle it's not even noticeable.

Update on the 3" silencer in the driver's side pipe - perfect! Before it was too loud driving at 2000 rpm in 5th gear. Now it's fine. Still makes some noise when I get on it.

joecg1996 01-29-2017 12:25 PM

I added a little more pipe to the end of my exhaust and it helped a little more than i thought. i've also seen a lot of stock exhaust for cheap on ebay.
