Is the V1 still king?

exentix 08-20-2012 12:21 PM

plenty of threads on this

Hamilton69 08-20-2012 12:23 PM

I have a Belltronics STI and it is tits, the Valentine V1 i think is one of if not the best, the STI I have has 2 forward facing receivers, where as most only have one

MizzyMS3 08-20-2012 01:12 PM

Pretty sure the 9500ix is the top dog nowadays.

Well, i can't live without my V1's arrows. Its hard to go back to anything else to be honest.

Love my V1 after learning my lesson from the cobra crap ones.

What lesson was that?

76TR6 08-20-2012 03:27 PM

V1's are definitely one of the best.

My friend and I did a side by side with his V1 and my new 9500ix. The 9500ix was much better at eliminating false signals. Picking up the redlight cameras is pretty sweet, along with the SWS text messages. Add the "Live" option with the smartphone app, and I think it's an unbeatable package.

It's pricey for sure, but if you're not stuck on the arrows, you should check out the Escorts. This is my 3rd upgrade going back to the original "big box" and I've been a very satisfied customer.

eb2292 08-20-2012 03:32 PM

9500ix all the way. Extremely good Ka highway detection and the GPS feature is something you will learn to take for granted. I hop in my buddies car once in a while and he has a V1.. lemme tell ya, if you live even remotely close to a city, you'll want to smash the V1 to pieces. The V1's detection is definitely on par with the 9500ix, but is a little dated feature wise.

JeepJunky33 08-20-2012 03:58 PM

ok what do people use under $150 lets say

A tin can and a string... Honestly, I don't think there are many new ones I would trust in that price range.

You would probably be better off picking up a used or refurbished Escort Passport 8500 x50
on ebay... I think you should be able to find one in that price range.

CosmicArkie 08-20-2012 04:28 PM

What ^^he^^ said.

Save up and buy a real detector.

I run a V-1 and STI Driver. Virtually identical detection. STI is more discriminating (quiet)
V-1 lets you determine if you want to ignore. Arrows are nice.

V1 is becoming dated technology wise. It would be nice to see it updated. The 9500ix is nice and i used one for a month. I even posted updated maps and shit for it on here. I just felt naked after using arrows for so many years, so i sent it back.

surebOOst 08-20-2012 04:36 PM

Escort is king

shifter48 08-20-2012 06:39 PM

I have this Cobra and find it to be a good detector for <$200..I like the GPS which monitors speed that I set my cruise to.

Here's a review.. http://radar-detectors-review.toptenreviews.com/

CtrlAlt1337 08-20-2012 08:12 PM

My Valentine 1 paid for itself within a month of purchasing it. You can turn off the X band if you know your local police dont use it because 90% of automatic doors use that band to detect people walking up to the door.

Haltech 08-20-2012 08:17 PM

Police havent used X band since the 80s in CA. Most use Lidar or KA Band.

The only thing I'd even consider is the Beltronics V6. And it's a bit more than $150 but Beltronics and Escort are the same company and they make very good stuff.

That's pretty cool.

I've been debating if I want to send in my 9500i to have it upgraded to a 9500ix. It's $130 and I'm just not sure I need to do it. I don't live in an area with red light cameras or anything.

I almost want to just send it in to make sure the calibration is correct...

Do you have the app and Live? I'm looking at a package that is only $40 more than the detector itself and comes with the cord, app, detector, and all that shit. Sounds cool but is it worth plugging your phone in all the time or is the detector itself fine?

JeepJunky33 08-21-2012 08:47 AM

What is everyones thoughts on this one.
Cobra iRadar iRAD-105 Radar Detector for Android Devices
It is has all 4 bands gps, etc. it is worth it or just gimiky?

Hey Keko,

I do have the app and "Live", but have only had my 9500ix for a little over a week and just installed the app and synced it a couple of days ago, so I haven't had enough wheel time to weigh in yet.

I'll be happy to let you know my opinion after I've racked up some miles. I picked it up since I was taking advantage of Escort's trade in program with my older Escort and figured it would be a wash since I only qualified for the $40.00 rebate.

Maybe Haltech will be kind enough to offer some insight for us both, since it sounds like he put it through it's paces for about a month or so.

I personally would never consider a cobra. Why? Because I paid over 100 for one and it quit working within 2 months. It would act like it was on but wouldnt give warnings. A guy I worked with had one and I told him cobra was the daewoo of detectors....he didnt believe me and a week later he got busted for 85 in a 60.

Escort is where I put my money 4 years ago and the only tickets ive got were my own dumbass fault. I would say 9500ix or the escort redline. These old guys use to arrows ( @Haltech lol) will only benefit from a nice upgrade to a escort :wavey:

I've ive noticed this through experience with my radar flipping shit and passing a cop over the oncoming hill. I have also noticed that some cops in Tampa use the K band. Stationary speed signs use this band as well here.

SamInAustinTX 08-21-2012 07:35 PM

Happy with my 9500i.

Only ever owned a V1 and it worked great.

3Gee Tee 08-22-2012 10:36 AM

So none of you V1/9500 owners have NEVER received a speeding ticket since owning it?

Just having a detector does not mean you wont get a ticket. You still have to be on the look out and drive smart. Having a good detector is worth the money but dont completely rely on it to give you hours notice so you slow down.

76TR6 08-22-2012 02:47 PM

I may be lucky, but I've actually never been pulled over when I was speeding intentionally. It's alway's been when I wasn't paying attention, like cruising on a nice day with the tunes up or forgot to turn the detector on in the first place.

I just recently got screwed with a damn red light camera due to sunglare and thinking it was just turning yellow... So I really like that warning feature on the 9500ix. The detector is just some added insurance to keep me alert.

galens47 08-22-2012 02:57 PM

I've got this one and it works a snap:

BELTRONICS Vector 955 Vector Series Radar / Laser Detector with POP Detection

Cheers,

Nope. I've only been stopped because of my car "running rich"...

The V1 picks the cops up at a great distance. The arrows help to show you what direction they are in. Many agree the 9500 is a great detector but once you have the arrows, it's kind of hard to give them up.

The LIDAR scatters off peoples cara where they shoot it here just after a corner. So I'll pick it up bouncing a mile ahead.

No detector will ever win against instant on however. Just hope there's a car in front of you if you are on some non populated road.

SamInAustinTX 08-22-2012 05:05 PM

Never have had a ticket with my 95001 or older beltronics 550. I also don't speed in obvious areas and am always careful.

Macncheese 08-22-2012 05:26 PM

I'm a v1 user. The arrows are what keep me with it.

theurgy 03-29-2014 04:43 PM

Didn't want to be a n00b and start a new thread, so figured I'd revive this one.
I've been able to get my hands on an older Escort Passport SR7 with the laser shifter package for a steal (quite literally, used to belong to some drug dealer who is now apparently dead).
I've been divided between just installing this in my car or trading it in through Escort and getting a 9500ci.
I could go with a window mount unit, but I feel I much prefer the custom installed units, for discretion and stealthiness of it.

Thoughts? Anyone running either the older SR7 or running a 9500ci? Let me know what you think.

3wheeln 03-31-2014 11:43 AM

I have a cobra888. I feel like it's a good "bang for the buck". It has voice prompts with 14 bands. I haven't had any false alarms yet. It does pick up camera lights and road hazards like construction and what not. It's def. saved me a couple times since I've purchased it. I paid 100 at walmart but you can find the same one on amazon for $60-$70.
