Ryan from Boston, New 10 MS3 question Hey guys, I'm Ryan. Just took home a new 2010 MazdaSpeed 3 Black Mica. I'm coming from a 2006 Civic EX, so this is a huge, awesome change!! I love it so far, and I look forward to being on here a lot! But for now, I have one quick question. After driving the car for a, when I get to where I'm going, do I need to let the engine idle for 30 seconds to a minute??? A friend of mine has an STi and he says it is absolutely necessary. I have no problem doing it if that the case, but I can't see the general public doing it. After all, my dealer wasn't sure how to answer this either. Thanks a lot! |
Welcome to MSF... Be sure to donate $10 to the forum to get VIP access and a shit ton of helpful info... as to your question, it isnt really necessary unless you have been flogging the car around going WOT and shit |

Alright cool thanks! I'll donate in a week or so. I just spent all I've got getting my ride. Almost blew thru a full tank of fuel in less the 48 hours! Premium is expensiver too! Oh well, it's totally worth it! |
Fryfry go to nator MA/Nh there is a bunch of us local from there. I'm in lynn so not to far from ya.. Welcome and donate you'll enjoy the VIP section. For the 30 sections thing I do it after long drives or after I beat on the car lol |
the gen1 cars came (new) with a little info series of cards that described doing this after running the car hard but with a water cooled turbo it's not necessary for normal every day driving pick up one of the obd2 monitors out there and start watching your numbers coming from the ecu so you really have an idea of what temps like your coolant are.. |
the obd2 monitor you want is called ultra gauge, its only 60 bucks and monitors everything but boost, knock, and afrs....pretty much all the good stuff. But its good know your fuel psi, fuel trims, coolant temps and others. |
Welcome! I'm just south of you in N. Quincy. We just had our first Nator meet a couple weekends ago and it was great. Add your name & info in this thread http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...r-ma-nh-77017/ and hope to see you at a meet soon. Congrats on the speed! |
I don't let it idle when I reach my destination. What I do is when I get close (about 30 seconds away), I drive slowly and try not to go into boost. That should simulate your 30 second idle. |
i believe it said in the manual you need to idle after driving highway speeds. I assume driving slow, like under 30 mph for a few minutes, would work too. It also says after driving it hard you should let it idle. I say better safe than sorry. I try to give it 30 seconds each time I drive. |
welcome to the best mazda sight on earth! i have family in gloucester so i come up in that area every like 6 months or so. hope to see some of you guys around. like they said not necessary unless you run the car hard. |
manual says that you should idle 30secs after driving at highway speeds or up a hill. another member posted a link to an aftermarket analysis of the K04 saying that really heating it up and then stopping it can cause the shaft to droop under the weight of the impeller. personally i let it idle. it might be overkill but i sleep at night. |
Thanks for all of the responses! I ordered an Ultra gauge, drives me crazy not having a temp gauge, it's so stupid. I've been letting it idle only when i drive hard, which isn't much at this point. It's kind of a shock going from a 31mpg 89 octane fueled civic, to this. But it's soo much fun! |
better to be safe then sorry |
