Unhappy Salt questions and carpet questions

Couple of questions, I'm kind of new here...

I bought my 2011 Mazdaspeed3 new. Since then, I've brought it to NJ, and I'll be taking it back to California this summer. Thing is, it's been through 3 winters now. With that comes the salt and sand of road treatments...

So basically, how do I mitigate or help try and reverse any damage that's been done? I'm not afraid to get under the car and get my hands dirty. Just looking for tips or tricks to get it done more efficiently. I'm also looking for any guidance as to what to look for. I'm planning on keeping this car until it's completely dead, so I want to keep it alive for as long as possible. It's the best car I've ever owned, and certainly the most fun.

Second question -

I might need to replace the passenger side footwell carpet. Earlier this morning, I spilled a fair bit of water-based polyurethane. I did the best I could to clean it up, but it's next to impossible to completely take it all up.

Is there a good way to replace the carpet myself, or is it more time/cost efficient to just have someone do it? And who should do it? The dealer, an auto-body shop, or someone else?

Any help is appreciated. I'm a pretty avid DIY kind of guy, I always take care of my car stuff by myself, but some things I'll just pay to have done if I don't have the proper tools/facilities.

From what I have heard, a pressure washer will get most of that crap off yer undercarriage. If there is any damage, clean the area thoroughly, then spray with a sealer/protectant designed for undercarriages.
A protectant spray before being exposed to that garbage might be a good idea too. Something like Chemical Guys TVD_104 - Bare Bones Undercarriage Spray (1 Gal)

About the carpet. Not sure if JC-Whitney carries pre cut carpet for us yet. Or if Rock Auto does.
I would think you can replace just the piece that starts behind the glove box, to hopefully a seam under the front passenger seat, that terminates under the center console, not the whole damn car.
Try looking Interior Car & Truck Accessories - PartCatalog.com for big ass floor mats that can cover everything.

I am looking at JC but its giving me trouble.

Call the Dealer and price out the carpet, see if it is available in pieces and price. Otherwise just buy a big ass floormat, or put in a weathertech or some shit so you don't foul it up again.

*Edit - I should mention that the closest I ever come to snow is when I eat one shaped like a cone with fruit syrup drizzled all over it. Or if I am sliding down a mountain.

Maybe a sad individual that is unfortunate enough to live in that kind of place can chime in.

First thing I bought for my car was a set of Husky carpet liner/floor mats (same deal as weathertech's just like $50 cheaper)... They cover basically the entire visible carpet area and keep any spills contained as well as containing all the shitty, sandy, salty, slushy snow we deal with over the winter.

Might be a whole hell of a lot cheaper and easier to just buy the carpet liners if you can't find replacement material easily enough...

I appreciate the sentiment, but I have a thick skin. I'm sure the guy had good intentions, and is sick of thankless freeloaders.

What is crazy is that you singled out this one post, and glossed over the guy who said basically the same thing in the second post.........that sort of biased posting and picking on newer individuals also does not help bringing in new members IMHO.

OP. I have to deal with the same issues here in MD. Typically, I will sand down whatever area that is not visible and just apply whatever rust proof solution and sealant and be done.

For the Carpet, if you can purchase a full carpet set, just replace it yourself. Should take a novice mechanic several hours on a Sturday to do!

Good luck!

That chemical guys stuff posted is the equivalent of armor all for your wheel wells. Won't do shit for salt / rust. I use LPS3 in the fall to coat the undercarriage and protect from salt and rust. Fluid film is another option as well.

Edit, reread that you're going back to CA. You best bet would be a paint that is designed to be applied over rust. There are many brands, I haven't used any personally so I can't recommend one over the other. But you'll want to "treat" all the visible rust you can, and then it still won't hurt to coat with LPS3 (dries to a waxy finish) for future protection.

Thanks a bunch. I'll be doing that once it warms up here! (Currently around -5 with the wind chill factored in). No garage

I know the feeling. -2 F when I left the house this morning in MD. Wind chill was close to -6.........

I'm not about that lifestyle lol.

Also, your car is new enough where there should be ample amount of rust proofing applied to the under side and under carriage of the car. I try to mitigate all this salt by trying to head to a carwash to use thier high pressure washer to get into the wheel wells and all along the undercarriage. You do have to be careful of refreezing, so a quick towel off before the towel also feezes seems to help!

Good luck!
Not crazy at all.

There is a vast difference between "donate" and "no one is going to do shit for you, unless you donate"

Warning or not.

Oh snap, the pitchforks are coming out.

I always wondered if being brown really was that different.

You're right, I don't know you. Fuckhead.

You had 2 threads deleted for post whoring to build count. I found no pitchforks for donate.

That said, you do not just tell someone to donate for asking a simple question.

Enough of this. Back on topic.

Being I have been warned I will offer up advice to help you for me shaming my family...

Invest in Weathertech Floor mats. It's a hit to the wallet at first but worth it. I just bought a set due to my g/f living in dirt/clay areas and it made a huge difference in keeping my car clean.

I love my weathertech mats. I havent had to vacuum my car out for 3 months now.
Take the mat out, brush it off, I have a spray bottle with half simple green and half water. Leaves a very nice clean smell inside.

Well, I did. I looked up your old posts, and couldn't find much of anything where people responded harshly to you for asking a question.

This is, indeed, a good thing (though it still doesn't appear that you were ever the target of much hazing before today).

Might be a whole hell of a lot cheaper and easier to just buy the carpet liners if you can't find replacement material easily enough...

IF shout went that far back I would be glad to do it. But it doesn't. This is the first forum I've been a part of and nothing you're going to say will change the fact that I did, too, get harassed for asking questions. You learn to grow a thick skin around here. Albeit, it was in shout, but I wasn't aware at the time it's not the best place to get answers.
Look, I've donated. Gladly. I met some chill people who've helped me out and I had no problem doing it. I was actually trying doing the OP a favor and attempting to be nice to the guy. Doesn't really matter anymore though does it? You guys already attempted to make an ass out of me.

I have the rubber mats from the dealer. They aren't a deep as the weathertechs but they are a hell of a lot cheaper.

I have these as well (for my MS6). Sadly, after about 5 years of continuous use, I wore a hole right through the area beneath the clutch pedal and didn't realize it until I could smell mildew from the carpet below.

@rfinkle2; had the same problem. mine show absolutely no wear after 5.5 years. in fact weathertechs I had in my ranger looked worse as they had started to dry out and crack. I will tell you the same thing I told rob. Take off your heels when driving.

Surprising that they are cheaper. Dealer stuff is typically way more. I never looked into them though.

Default Salt

The best I can recommend for that is spraying down the car with a hose, and try to rinse some of it off. I am not sure what you could do to prevent salt from sticking, but if you leave it on there, it will rust.
Bought a used truck a while back, and the bed was rusted something awful from use in Maryland.
