Scan tool needed to personalize MS3?

2 part question:

I've read the topic of explaining what to do at the dealer to have them correctly find your vehicle and personalize it. Such as once touch drivers door unlock all doors. Or one click turn signal for 3 auto clicks...

1st: What scan tool do you need in order to make these changes? The local dealer wants to charge me $60 just to attempt to try. They said they should be able to, but doesn't know. A few of my friends have scan tools, not sure if one of those would work?

2nd: What other personalize features have people done with them? I know with my old Golf TDI, and the Vagcom there were a lot of different things you could change. Curious how the MS3 is also?

Sorry if this has already been discussed, I did try looking for it!!!

get it?!

I think Mazdas require a VCM (think Ford). looks like the imitation ones with pirate software are on eBay for around 5 times what the dealer is asking.

$60 is a bit cheaper, go to the dealer and show them the personalized features in the back of the owners manual.

It's all in the manual

I bought my MS3 used and when I approached the dealer they gave me same thing of $50-$60 to do it. I got in contact with Mazda USA and explained to them that since these cannot be changed by the driver and require you to go to Dealer to change options and you normally get 1 personalization free(supposedly there is a card that comes with the manuals) and clearly the previous owner never did it, then the car should still have it's free personalization and they agreed.

I did
1x to unlock all doors
Tap to blink 3 times(Smart Turn)
Illumination - set form 30 min auto off to 10 min
Avanced keyless(Tech Package) - lock doors when key is out of range(car off)
Auto Headlight on/off - stock = 2000-4000 lx - Iopted for the 1000-2000lx setting

one thing to keep in mind, the Advanced Keyless auto lock just utterly DESTROYS the the keyless entry batteries lol. I've had the car 1.5 years and have gone through 3 batteries already and I just got the key battery low warning this morning and iwll be swapping out again.

I talked to Mazda yesterday. They're sending me a gift card to use at the dealership so I don't have to pay for the connect!

Ordered my COBB RMM too!

Coming from a 06 gli to a 12 ms3 there is nothing outside of the dealer like a vag-com unfortunately. And no you can't do the windows with the key fob.

MBalik 03-26-2015 11:25 AM

Shit didn't even know about this. Time to read up in the user manual

Yeah that windo/fob thing was only on the MS6 GT model I think. Wish they would have included in the MS3

$60 is pretty cheap, lots of dealers charge $100-120 for this. I've seen the pirate versions for as little as ~$200, and thought about getting one just to have full control over my car as well as to have another local nator resource. Have never gotten down to brass tacks and ordered anything though.

I looked because I need to do mine too.... I bought my car in another state and wasn't told about these so I couldn't exactly go back to the dealer at which I purchased it to get my free settings. It's exceptionally annoying that these weren't made user-accessible.

Especially considering that the CX 5 or 7(can't remember which) are user accessible settings from the info screen.

You could probably still get in contact with Mazda USA and have them send you to a local dealer to get it done.

Right, exactly, I don't recall which car but I'd heard about that too. Annoying!

Yeah I figured I could contact Mazda to get it done, just haven't bothered yet. Maybe will angle for this as part of my ENM prep, just to force myself with a deadline.

Just got a few of these switched on at my local stealership:
  • Smart Key auto-lock
  • Smart turn
  • Driver's door button unlocks all doors

They charged me $30. I decided not to bitch about doing it for free.

Hmph. I'll be at a different dealer tomorrow. I'll ask about it, if they will do it for $30 I might just do it. Of course if they'd let me have at a VCM for ten minutes while they do the rest of the crap I could just do it myself, LOL. Maybe I'll tell them this would be adequate reparations for putting my damn lug nuts on so tight it broke a Craftsman drive adapter. Sure I can get another but the damn things are on stupid tight. Fuckers.

Hah, got the settings done for free with the rest of my service. Maybe they felt guilty about breaking my tools. In any case I appreciate them being willing to extend an olive branch and make it right, plus I have my settings done. w00t!

Heard the smart key feature destroys the batteries in the fob. Battery doesn't last very long to begin with.

Lol yeah they do. I get about 3 maybe 4 months now out of my batteries. I just ordered a 10 pack off Amazon for $6 so I'm good for the next 2-3 years

Technically "the smart key feature" is very rong terminology. I got 1.5 year from the OEM battery with autolock turned off. Now that I have it on, and I'm about to put in a new (2025 expiration) battery we'll see. As Beaner noted, coin cells are relatively inexpensive to procure these days so if it adds convenience I really couldn't be too much arsed about it burning them more quickly. If it gets down to monthly I might have a think about it just on a convenience basis.
