Scraped a semi basically Welp, you read correctly. Basically an 18 wheeler was trying to squeeze its entire long ass frame in front of a small gated community's gate (see first photo below -- it's extremely ironic because I took a picture beforehand just to highlight how dumb this was to attempt before even pulling behind it). Anyway I was on my way to work, and had to stop at a friend's house before I went so I didn't have much time to wait. After staying in the position in the photo for a while, I pulled up behind the truck. A cop then pulled up behind me and saw what the truck was doing, so the truck put his hazards lights on in an attempt to trick the officer. I guess it worked; either that or the cop didn't care, because he simply went around both of us and opened the gate, went around and let himself in. After having waited long enough, I decided to follow suit. My car is kind of low, so at my then current line of sight level, it seemed I could get around the truck no problem because... well, a Crown Vic just did it. So as soon as I pull out, I get around the truck but the very back end got scraped by something that was out of sight on my way around. When I asked the truck driver what the actual **** he was doing he proceeded to basically tell me "sorry, not my problem. My hazards were on and I took no damage from that anyway." So this leads me to my question -- most places want close to $1,000.00 to fix a stupid surface scrape so I'm simply looking to cover it. What can I use? I considered flares, but I don't know how practical that would be. I know there isn't much I can do to the small area with frame bending. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. |
5 Attachment(s) Sorry, wouldn't let me edit an attach photos. Here are the pics I was talking about above. Despite the way it looks, there was actually enough room to get around the truck on the right side. |
Why not just replace the front fender? Plenty of those floating around on eBay. |
It's on the back left actually. Sorry, thought I added the full view of the car. See the very last photo above. It's like a surface scrape. |
that's not a scrape that's a dent I don't know what you will find to cover that |
So you couldn't see how close you were - on the driver's side? No choice but to go to a body shop and get that fixed and repainted whatever color that is. They could also fix all the chips/rust your paint/plasti dip is covering on that panel. |
:wtf1: If I fucked up this badly (hitting the drivers side) while trying to squeeze around something, I would be way too embarrassed to post this shit on the forums. Good thing I know how to drive.(or maybe I dont) |
Just pony up out of pocket or get raped on your insurance for almost a decade. You pretty much hit a parked tractor trailor. May the odds be ever in your favor. |
http://i.imgur.com/4P2F49z.gif five rules to follow when you've hit a parked vehicle: 1. avoid posting about it on the internet. 2. if you are unable to avoid the internet, lie about the situation. 3. do not attempt to deflect blame. you've just hit a parked car. i mean, you've hit a parked car. 4. punch yourself in the face. 5. punch yourself in the face. as far as fixing it goes, i would leave it as is and fix it correctly when i could afford it instead of masking it, whether i opted for a new fender or paid a body shop to clean it up. |
1. Takes picture of parked semi he's about to hit which, incidentally, has its blinkers on. 2. Hits parked semi which has its blinkers on. 3. Blames semi. 4. Suggests putting on fender flares to cover damage. 5. Has ugly-as-shit matte-finish tinted tail-lights (probably so people can't see him while he's hitting parked semi trucks). What the ever-loving fuck is wrong with people these days? Well, at least it's a PU. The additional hard creases don't really change much about the look. |
...I had to. |
Paint this down the side, it'll match your paint perfectly. |

Where did op go. To matco? Tappin |
$1000 seems a little low in my opinion. If you get it done at a good body shop thats at least a 12 hour repair on the quarter, blending the left rear door to match the quarter, droping the rear cover, pulling the quarter glass, detriming the door for paint, and depending on how good the painter is at the shop they may need to blend the entire roof rail. Theres ALOT more to a proper repair then people realize and it adds up fast. |
That's a new quarter panel and then into the door itself. That's on you to fix since truck was not moving. Call insurance. |
Good for you. |
