Default Shift point discussion

Just thought I'd throw it out there and see what people thought. Dunno about the genjuan but genpu has 2 final drives, which I think is interesting. Anyways, I put some #s in the spreadsheet and took a generic stockish dyno (I know there isn't a one size fits all here) and this is what I came up with:

Gear rpm
1st 6700
2nd 5700
3rd 5700
4th 6200
5th skip and go to 6th

It's definitely a bit weird but I think there are maybe too many gears given the powerband / final drive ratios. 5th can be skipped, unless you can shift in less than, say 0.12 seconds. The object of the shift points is to maximize the torque (engine x gear ratio x final drive) and this is what I came up with. If you have BT and your torque band is higher / wider, you will be shifting later. just my .02...

^these might be for stock power and mapping... but there isn't much of that going around here.

FWIW... 5th is an important gear... most won't top 6th out anyways

I'm confused. You want to skip 5th gear? Why? Are we talking drag strip shift points or track shift points?

I can't see any scenario where you would benefit from skipping 5th gear.

The fuck is going on here? You can't generalize shift points for everyone and say 5th gear is useless. You must be basing these off stock power and stock rpm capabilities. Most people here are revving higher then this and making more power with a power band higher than you have discussed. This is all relative to the power you're making and tire size you're running as well

The Juan and MS6 have two final drive ratios as well, though they are different than the Pu. Same thing with the gear ratios. I have posted data and calculations concerning this on MSF before.

I personally shift at 7,200-7,500 RPM. Why? Because built engine and GTX3071. In addition, I use 5th and make a point NOT to use 6th of going WOT. Too much loading of the drivetrain IMHO.

Why would I skip fifth gear? Can you please present scientific information in regards to this. Or are you just butt dynoing it.

Probably using his butt dyno. The most accurate way to tell. Each person is going to be different depending on that driving style and build of the car.

Don't the stock and OTS maps have a boost compensation of 0.9 or 0.95 for 6th gear to reduce drivetrain load and power anyway? Still don't see how skipping 5th would be quicker regardless, but this is another factor that probably wasn't considered.

If you're going for speed/max acceleration, wouldn't skipping fifth drop you out of your power band? And the increased spacing in the gearing of fourth and sixth would increase the load on sixth gear, which ussually is not a strong gear. That would increase the risks of gear failure. I wouldn't think that it's a good idea to skip a gear under WOT.

You are not driving a 36 gears diesel truck, are you? Because if you do then you're on the wrong forum talking about stupid crap such as skipping gears.

Also, regarding your shift points, keep in mind that the actual RPM is about 200rpm lower than what you see on the dash RPM gauge. At 6700rpm you will see 7000rpm on the dash, so at 5700 you'll probably be at 5500 tops, and at 6200 you'll be at like 5950 or so.

Even on the stock tune and turbo I recommend shifting higher than 5700. 6000-6100rpm sends more power to the wheels than 4000-4300 in the next higher gear with more demultiplication. But that's just me not driving a diesel truck.

Even as a k04'd and stage 1 ms3, I would never skip fifth. The tune allows me to hold 14psi to redline. Why the hell would I do that?

I actually use 5th a lot in both my MS6 and genpu. I hate threads like this. Everything is relative to the driver!

This is going to be another pointless brownie thread.

I think OP got started down the right path... his first few shift points are about right for stock powerband, but then shit gets weird. Double check your numbers/cells/formulas. In general you want to shift earlier and earlier as you go thru the gears

My track day I was hitting about 120mph in 5th with ~6k on the tach.
If you look at various logs in the ECU section, you're breaking 100mph in 4th gear at the red line.

The problem is probably that the OP is granny shifting and not double clutching like he should.
