Socket caliper spreader for brake work

Hi All,

I'm trying to get a Socket caliper spreader to swap out my brake pads. Just a FYI: It'll be worth for me to purchase one right now since I'll be doing some brake work on the cars for the future.

I was wondering what brand you guys are using. Is there a particular you think I should look into?

Thanks for any recommendation

I have this for the rear calipers and use a large c clamp and wood block for the front.

This is the kit I use and have been very pleased with it.

I picked up a tool from sears. Cube with different size pins on each face and fits on a ratchet. I can't find one like it on my phone but it was cheap and works great for the rears.

open the bleeder valve on the fronts and you can push the piston back in by hand, no tools required

rears are up to you, pair of needle nose pliers works well too, just push and turn

they also sell the rear tool at most all auto parts stores for less than $10

Is there something unusual about the brakes in this car that requires a special tool? I've used s screwdriver BEFORE removing the old pads on every brake job I've done.

I use a Harbor Freight kit (although mine is the "older" version they don't sell anymore that came in a red case and was slightly cheaper).

Well worth the investment for this car's PITA rear pistons.

You want the kit from Harbor Freight. And you want a Motive Power Bleeder.

Between those two, you'll be tempted to start doing brake jobs for fun & profit.

I used these on the fronts.

That's the one I have. I believe I paid like $25 for it, versus the $100 craftsman bullshit, and everyone else who has one made of gold. LOL.

Cheap chinese shit FTMFW!

Edit... No, mine is the red one. Cheaper chinese shit FTW!

I also use the harbor freight kit for the rears. Needle nose pliers started to hurt my hand.

I use this for the fronts. It was on sale for $10 one day when I was in sears. Of course I don't use both bolts.

I've never used anything other than c clamps.

Heres the cube some have mentioned. I have it as well, its cheap, hooks up to your ratchet, and works great. There are different configurations on each side so just gotta plug in the side you use and go baby go.

Needle nose pliers. And a can of man.

silvapain 01-31-2013 05:01 PM

Fronts: big C-clamp and an old brake pad.

Rears: needle-nose pliers.

Wow, interesting to see all kind of tools and methods you guys are using.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Was a busy day today at work.

I'll look into the responses and pick some recommendations.

Many thanks so far to all of you...

I got that one and didn't find a side that fit my 2012... ended up using long needle-nose pliers. My old pads were still in very good shape, so I didn't have to push/twist very much.

Mauro_Penguin 03-04-2013 06:28 AM

Good to know, thanks for the heads up. Guess I'll be in the market for brake tools as well.

bertrand_CX_7 03-04-2013 08:56 AM

I'm not too sure about the one you got but I got this from Harborfreight and it seems to be working pretty good for me:
