Spoiler rattle?

2 Attachment(s)
about 30k miles ago I thought I heard a rattle in the rear hatch, while in for service I asked the tech if there was anything wrong with the rear spoiler.... today on the drive to work I found out that his answer was incorrect.......

looks like only one nut was attached, one bolt was missing altogether and it flew off at 75 mph, luckily no one behind me was hit (or even noticed) but it did not survive the fall...

now I have 46k miles and likely not a repair under warranty.

Cf wrap and reuse.

Actually thinking about that, but will still need to replace the 3rd brake light assembly, it split down the middle; if you look at the picture of the hatch, the bolt/nut is still holding a quarter sized bit of plastic... looking at the damage it appears that only one bolt/nut was attached and the rest was held in place by the plastic clips, fortunately the brake light wiring ripped post plug.

for now I will duct tape the hatch holes shut, water/snow getting in there isn’t a good thing.

Ugh.

51-580:$177
51-032B: $97

Those prices are ridiculous...

That sucks, had mine do this three years ago. When I replaced mine I swapped out the oem nuts with Teflon locking nuts no problems since.

This has been a known issue for quite some time.

Yep, I had mine done by the dealer under the TSB and had them put locktite on the bolts - no more rattle

loctite for the win.
Sucks to see it fall off, glad no one had a spoiler thru their windshield.

Are you still using the same dealership that you went to for the rattle? If so, they may have a record of the visit. The spoiler flying off at 46k miles is bullshit, I would go see them and try and raise a little hell about it. If the dealership acts like fucking douches about it, call Mazda North America. They may tell you to fuck off, but try and hold Mazda accountable for that shit. You may end up in the same position you started in, but it's worth a shot.

El Beaner 02-25-2015 12:50 PM

I thought there was a TSB for this? I may be wrong and just had the dealer fix it either way.

Yatta 02-25-2015 12:57 PM

Yeah I called the dealership, doesn’t seem to be a TSB, they suggested I call Mazda NA, but also suggested I was SOL, tech did not note it, it only rattled a bit when I closed the hatch hard (not slamming it but it has never seemed to latch without a little momentum) so the explanation that they all do that seemed in line.

IF the tech noted that there was a rattle, and never actually inspected what was causing the rattle then I would put it on Mazda to repair. Reason is had they inspected, they would have found the bolts/nuts starting to back out loosening the spoiler causing the rattle.

Definitely call Mazda and talk with them.

Damn, if no notes it's going to be an uphill battle. I really hope you get it covered but something like this(especially with the documented information across a multitude of forums) might sway them in your favor.

LOL, this happened to my dumbass again because I didn't go back and locktite them like I said I was going to.

Edit: Op of dat thread is a totes babe, BTW.

El Beaner 02-25-2015 01:22 PM

What sucks more is you have a CWP which is possibly the rarest of the Speed colors I would think. I found used spoilers on car-part.com but none in white

They do have a black Mica spoiler if you want to add some contrast lol

Yatta 02-25-2015 01:30 PM

I found an unpainted ABS on ebay for 119, paint will cost more than the part but definitely want it right. Will try Mazda first.
