I agree...turn in on dunlaps is good - but that's about the only thing good about them. Grip is shit, hydroplaning is straight up scary & they r summer only.

I will not get 20k miles out of these tires, but I do not expect to. They have a relatively low treadwear rating for a street tire. I enjoy the grip they provide but that also means they can not last as long as some hard high mileage tire. I just wish they weren't so expensive, I would not mind getting them again.

Kind of bumping a couple month old thread. But i don't find them that bad. I bought my Genpu with 4,500 miles and i have 17,500 on it now with no noticeable change in tread depth. 7 to 6 32'nds all around. But that was with 90% highway driving or even less. They are quite harsh over bumps and are pretty noisy. They seem to have good handling but i drive like a grandma most of the time and that's kind of why my tires still have decent tread left i think.

Rotated them the other day and found the rears were starting to get cupped. I need to take my car back to Mazda to have the alignment looked at again.

Dunlop tires are decent but i don't think they are great and they are stupid expensive. Feel sorry for the people that dont know better and take their car to the dealer to get OE equipment. But hey! at least they arent Prime Wells

Soon i think im going to swap them out for a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE970as Pole Position's or Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport's if those qualify for my 50% off discount i can get on the pole positions

Might want to check out the SO4 pole position as well. Personally I'd recommend the Michelin pilot sport a/s 3 over the re970. I drive mine fairly hard and I'm definitely on track to get 45k out of them.

Checked today. all i can get at the discount as far as tires id actually want is the RE970 pole position. Otherwise i can get any bridgestone summer tire at 10% off instead of getting the pole positions at 50%. More money saved to buy go fast parts. And im sure the RE970s are better than the Dunlops.

The RE970s are good. My roommate has them on his SRT-4 and they've been good. He wont get 40k but probably 35 or so. He drives it relatively hard too.

This topic seems to get rehashed every couple months. I have 25k on mine with 2 track days and they are down to around 4/32". They had no problems in the wet for the one track day and were actually quite impressive. The stock tires are trash in the snow but they are summer tires so that is expected.

That said, the tires sitting in my garage right now are Dunlop ZII. For the price of the OEM ones I don't think they are quite worth it. Take all the negative reviews with a grain of salt though, most people forget the burnouts, lack of rotation, or never having the alignment checked.

TLDR; there are far worse tires then what we get stock but would not buy if replacing, too many other great options

I find that jacking up the air pressure in my tires has solved my inner tire wear issue on my winters. Going to try it on my summers and see how it goes

Default Ventus R-S3

The Hankook Ventus R-S3's caught my attention on Tire Rack for $150/tire - they're rated at 140 for wear but supposedly hold up to a 200 (according to Tire Rack's write up).

Anybody else ever tried those? They beat out the star specs on Car & Driver's write up:

Monsters of Grip: Nine Summer-Performance Tires Tested Comparison Tests - Page 7 - Car and Driver

Pretty sure I'm going to give them a try this summer.

My stockers only lasted me about 15k, I drive the thruway ramps pretty hard on a daily basis so my inner tread is completely GONE.

I'm at 26k on the stock Dunlops and I figure I'll get a few K more out of them. The tires don't bother me as much as the shitty Mazda alignment that chews the inner edge. My only gripe would be the noise, but I know that's expected in a performance tire. I hope I'm successful in finding a better sounding replacement.

At 13k miles, I'm on the search for a replacement. Second gear with my mods is already a pointless endeavor regarding grip, and it'll give a good chirp and spin a bit into third if I shift hard. I'm more into straight line grip than turns. Already tried S.drives and Conti DW's on my 310whp/370wtq legacy (AWD) and that car would roast both of those through first, and rolling onto it in second would get a quick blip of spin, so those probably won't work for me.
Any word on straight line grip compared to the 2050s with the supersports? A friend of mine runs KDWs on his SRT-4 with decent results, but he hardly drives the car. I drive mine 16k a year.

i'm about due to replace my tires, so far i've had to replace just 2 tires because of the inner wall wear even though i got an alignment with every tire rotation. i have roughly 30k on my current tires, i'm looking at the BFGoodrich G-Force Super Sport or Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3. Input please??

I have 18500 on mine as of today. I have just one tire now that is showing some corner wear that I think was due to under inflation this winter . I should of really checked them more when it was 15 degrees outside, but damn it was 15 degrees !!

I just rotated those to the back and will keep a better eye on the pressure. I think I will get at least 6K more out of these , maybe more.

This winter in the snow they were not too bad with the traction control able to keep them in check , certainly not the best, but I could live with them.

I will get the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 next.

I've got about 10k on my pilot sport AS/3's including the worst winter my area has seen in more than 20 years. I have no complaints. They stick like summer tires in the dry and wet, and provide passable snow traction.

Got 23k out of the stock tires, even though I rotated the tires every maintenance the inner corner was showing the cording on the front tires.

Ended up having to make a on-the-spot decision regarding new tires, and ended up with Kumho Ecsta SPT's. So far (only driven on them for 4 days or so) they feel a little squirrelly compared to the stock Dunlops, but I'm hoping based on the limited after-purchase research that they'll do a lot better in the rain.

Not expecting much snow in Texas, so I don't mind so much the nonexistant winter performance. What does MSF say about these? I found one, maybe two posts on them total when searching.

(First post, long time lurker).

Thank God I'm not the only one who's experienced the ridiculous rate of tire wear coming from the Dunlops. Being that my MS3 is a 2013 model and that I've barely even had it for a year yet have been through more than one set of tires during that time frame, I'd most definitely say the tires aren't that good.

I will also say that I drive my car pretty hard. More is being done these days in terms of adjusting my driving style in order to accommodate maximum tire life. I myself only squeezed about 10K miles out of the Dunlop tires -- however, I believe I could've definitely seen no short of 15,000 miles on those tires had I driven like an actual civilized human being.

I only put 10k on mine before swapping to a better tire, but had lots of tread left. I wonder if there is a lot of variability in alignment from the factory or if it is just driving style. I didn't baby mine at all though.

terrible tires, had them both on my WRX and MS3 from factory. Uneven wear (yes I check tire pressure, rotate and alignment) and limited grip for the category. I have a set of goodyear eagle assymetric F1 summer tires and despite being rates as average for the category, they are much better than the dunlops.

so right now i'm looking at getting new tires pretty soon. have about 18.5k on my dunlops, thinkin i can get at least 20k out of them.

looking at the conti extremecontact dw (cuz california) and the hankook ventus s1.

i know people really like the contis, but was wondering if anyone has tried both the contis and the hankooks. both get good reviews on tirerack, but the hankooks are rated at 500 treadwear as opposed to the 340 on the contis, and the reviews say that they are really quiet as well.

my ms3 is my daily so i'd like a tire that will last pretty long but still perform decently.
anyone run the ventus s1 and like them?

The stock Dunlops should not be allowed to be manufactured, they are a disaster waiting to happen.

I live in LA where paved roads are as close to going off-road as you can get on paved roads and I had 3 inside sidewall failures on the Dunlops. And when I went to change up to the Conti DWs I noticed both of my rears were about to blow. That would have been 5 failures had they gone. You could see where the sidewall was separating from the rest of the tire, with plenty of tread left.

I never got through the tread on the Dunlops because they wouldn't last more than 10k miles before the sidewalls failed. I'm dense, it took me a while to figure out what was going on.

After I switched to the Contis I've not had a single problem.

I don't know, maybe Dunlop has improved the construction, but I wouldn't pay $250 a tire to find out.

just an update for anyone interested

at about 20.5k miles i did a tire rotation with oil change and saw that the inside of the front tires had been shred down to the core (i think that's what you call it. metal was clearly visible). i never hear any rubbing and the car still drove straight, still don't know why it would do this.

but i eventually decided on the nitto motivos since all tire shops i talked to were gonna have me wait for a week to get the contis. the nittos are all season tires, but i'll make do with them i guess. they're quiet and grip a little better than the dunlops (from my experience anyways) and they're not too expensive either.

i have about 1.5k miles on them now. i would suggest them if you are wanting to try new tires out.

Allow me to interject something not related to your tire compounds and tread patterns. Just humor me and spend $80 on THESE and see what they do for your car. It's an RSB and full car RMM in one. I can put down power leaving a corner like no one's business. I can hook 2nd gear with a corn tuned BNR on Conti DW 235's. These silly ass balloons will restore your faith in going for more power with a FWD.

If you can get over not having 1 finger of wheel gap clearance, you can overcome a whole lot of the limitations of FWD.

That'll do it too, especially if it sneaks up on you at cruising speeds.

I took my car out a few times on the track for some autocross days. I was impressed how much G's these tires held, the first few months they were right at 0.97 G's, i was using my buddies G-tech... but im in the same boat these tires are just about gone, the wear bars are pretty close to start rubbing.. I think i am at 25k right now.. but for a softer tire you really cant expect what a highway tire will get..

My buddy recommended the g-Force T/A KDW 2 for a street/track tire idk if anyone else as run these but its worth a shot

Well to be honest, my car has only 17K and sometime I'll be needing new set of tires. I didn't like to much these dunlops, they don't last to much so I was thinking of getting any of these:
