Stock gen2 vs 911 turbo at the track

Hey folks. Took my gen 2 to our local track for a HPDE. My car is a 2010 with 172,000kms (maybe 105K miles). It is basically stock aside from using Hawk HP+ brake pads and Michelin Pilot sport Cup tires.

In my run group the only competition was an orange 911 turbo (remainder were BRZ's, GTI's, gen 1 Speed3, fiesta ST, Focus ST, Mini, various Subaru STI's). Linked below is an edited video of one of my runs. It was pretty fun chasing him down, but it was frustrating in that I was overall faster (he had me on the straights, I had him in the corners), but the Marshals would not blue flag (sign of faster car behind) him when I got on his tail waiting to be waved by. As soon as he would approach a slower car... they would immediately wave him on. I would approach the same cars and would often need to wait half a lap or more before being flagged to pass. I guess there is an advantage to being a orange 911 turbo.

Anyway, enough complaining, here is the video. Stop posing, GET OUT AND TRACK YOUR SPEED3.

drivers front. Track is hard on the drivers front. This is what happens when you try to push too hard. Overcooked turn 9 (right hander). Overall, a big step up form the Michelin Super Sports, which are a great tire.

Looks like you need more camber and/or more pressure in front tires. Try running 38-42 psi hot. That Porsche guy needs a driver mod pretty bad, I bet I could make him spin by staying close on his ass. :D

Michelin suggests 32 hot front, 35 rear. I probably ran a little higher than that, as I was 32 warm for the fronts. Still, the loss of grip on the straights might be worth the firmness in corners. I was fine at first but tried to go a little lower as the day warmed up to see what would happen, but I agree I went too low. My tires did pretty well until the final session - with a heavy passenger and me not adjusting with higher pressures. Overcooking a right hander did not help either. The beat up tire will be passengers rear next time.

I need way more front negative camber to get full benefit from these tires. Probably will not bother however as there is no easy solution (tried the loosening the three bolts trick), and this is a hold-over until my other car finishes a rebuild.

The 911 driver was decent but none of us are pros. He did not have the tires that I had (mind you he had far wider tires).

That's a narrow track..looks fun though!

I wouldn't go so far as to say your stock ms3 is comparable to a 911 turbo though. Your tires may have been confidence inspiring, but he was obviously not pushing hard.

Keep it up! I have a track day this Friday!

The Porsche seemed really slow coming out of the corners.

Cool vid man, looks like a good day. It's been a while since I've done a HPDE...can't wait to get back out there. Though after ENM@MDC I really just want to go back and drive the Dragon over and over again haha.
