Tire Wear Concerns

After trashing the OEM Dunlops in 15000 miles, I just went through a set of Conti DWSs in 10000. I check pressures regularly, rotated at 5000, and had an alignment just in case. Is it me, or does this little bastard eat up tires this fast?

BTW, Conti gave me about a 50% break on a new set based on their tread wear warrantee.

You track it? Was the wear even?

ASHMS3 10-04-2012 04:58 PM

Look for a thread in suspension called OEM toe issue, IIRC. You probably need an alignment. I just rotated for the first time this weekend and the inside edge of my fronts are bald. The OEM specs for a good alignment on this car are nuts.

If you wear is uneven then you can tell your issues based on pattern. If you are worn on the outside edges you are under inflated and worn in the middle is over inflated. Then you also have the camber issues and toe in. Also maybe you need to change your driving style. Peeling out all the time is tempting but expensive.

There's the thread.

Yeah... everyone says OEM toe in issue, well my tires are bald on the inside too and my alignment is good. I know I've seen other people post that as well and you said you had an alignment as well.

I'm not sure what to do at this point... this is the only thing I hate about the car... other than FWD.

If both inner and outter are worn, alignment and tire pressure good, you are driving it to hard...or perfectly hard IMO

But for real that's what it is. Taking a corner hard causes excessive inner and outter wear, since the tires with slide a bit even if you can't hear it.

That is my exact problem...taking the damn corners too hard...because I can?

That's not a bad thing :)

Not at all...well, the tires disagree, heh

Wear is even, but the fronts (logically) are gone before the rears. I don't track the car, but most of my driving is on twisty mountain roads, and while I don't slide the car, I use it hard. I wonder if Conti will offer another 50% break if I go through the next set in 10k.

pacheco_ms3 10-05-2012 03:10 PM

i went through my dunlops around 17k, seems like a normal thing for the mazdaspeed3 the inner wear has to do with the stock suspension & the guy at americas tire said this is common with all cars with sport tuned suspensions, get an alignment for better tire wear/ less performance

Dumyz 10-05-2012 05:34 PM

You just gotta stop drifting.

dead-zone 10-05-2012 05:43 PM

I went through my stock ones in about 12000. Here in Chicago everything is pretty much straits, so not much cornering, whenever I can I do it though :) The next set was Goodyear F1 all season(super tires) lasted about 20000 miles.

So i guess 15000 is not bad for your style of driving.

I am just now at the wear bars all the way around at 19k miles. I don't think it has much to do with cornering. It does have alot to do with burnouts. These tires are just soft and are gonna wear in 20k -25k miles even if driven gently in a straight line. They get VERY noisy too once you get near the wear bars. My car sounds like a freaking helicopter inside nowadays if the windows are up.

Cornering too hard, alignment problems, inflation pressure problems, would all manifest as *UNEVEN* wear. For example, the outer edge worn too much esp on the front tires (toe-in or just driving it too hard), cupping (where the front edge of each tread block is more worn than the trailing edge), chunking (driving it WAY too hard, if auto'xing get some real slicks and drive in SSx stock class), etc.

Bottom line, these tires are what they are: Summer ultra high performance tires. They suck in any kind of snow or ice and they wear out quickly. What really is odd is how expensive they are. No way I'm gonna replace these at $250 a corner when I can get some high rated Kuhmo Ecsta 4X tires for a little over $100 a corner. Sure they will give up a tad bit of summer grip and feel, but they will be better in all other aspects including noise, wear, and treadlife. At least that's what I'm reading. If anyone has experience with the Kuhmo Ecsta 4X tires let me know please.

Got 17 k on oems. 38,000 on Goodyear eagle f1 gs d3's. at 20,000 on Nitto Neogens.

Oems don't last. Known for 6 years now.

mswierse 10-07-2012 07:22 AM

My issue and I've seen others report the same thing... My alignment is good, but my tires are wearing on the inside... Can't do much other than get tires every year I guess.

Did you not rotate them? They should all wear evenly.

ThizSpeed3 10-07-2012 06:06 PM

yeah same here the inside wears fast, might as well go hellaflush with it:gives:
