Trading in my Gen2 FML

As much as I loved my Gen2 I decided on another vehicle instead. So I ripped off most of my mods and sold them minus Intake/Exhaust/Cosmetic mods and traded it in to Carmax who gave me a good deal on the trade-in.

So I honestly didn't think about it when I traded it in but my exhaust system eliminates the 2nd cat and essentially replaces it with a TP configuration. Granted, it will still pass emissions in Texas since we only do plug-in but I saw some sign that stated you can be fined up to 25k for tampering with the emissions.

Of course I start doing research on the Interweb and find all these horror stories where people running TP get fined and can go to prison/etc which totally drives my anxiety sky-high. I looked all over my place for the stock 2nd cat to give to the dealer but cannot find it.

It's been 7 days and they haven't said anything but I'm almost wondering if I should tell them and offer to replace the cat out of pocket.

Here I sit freaking out for the last few days and not sure what route (if any) to take. Several of my friends had traded cars in heavily modified without problems, but for some reason I'm so scared that I'll get a call from a lawyer or a fed over a TP.

Paranoid maybe... but if any of you have information or advice, I'd appreciate it...

rghispanic88 05-07-2011 10:45 AM

u should have taken it off and sold it. lol

whatever man, u traded the car in already so its their problem now. if they would have had a problem with it they would have notified before u traded it in.

what car did u trade for?

Monotonous ONE 05-07-2011 10:49 AM

Well they only had the car for 30 min to inspect for trade-in. I kind of doubt they looked under the car, but pretty sure they will when they go to sell it or auction it off. That's the part that worries me, that I'll get some call after the fact. I honestly didn't think about it otherwise I would have reverted and bought a used TP.

Ended up getting a Nismo 370z.

That's what I assumed too, but it says something about the seller (me) being responsible for any tampering to the emissions system. Granted the 2nd cat doesn't do much and we don't sniff test in Houston, but still it's driving me mad.

PapaSmurf 05-07-2011 10:57 AM

If it's still for sale, I may buy it as added protection in case they actually call or send the suits.

LOL, wouldn't worry about it man. Had a friend of mine bought a 07 Lancer and the clutch went FUBAR after a few months and Mitsu gave him shit about replacing it even though tons of people on their forums were having the same problem.

Long story short he traded it in with the clutch being bad, the dealer didn't even call him back after he traded it in. So I'm pretty sure if they take it in, they have to fix it/make it legal again before they can sell it. I'm about to PCS to Texas myself and had my 2nd cat cut off, I'm not sweating it at all.

You carry a gun in your door pocket and are worried about trading a car in with a test pipe?

Dash08 05-07-2011 11:54 AM

You sound like a huge wuss. "Oh no, the long dick of the law is gonna fuck me."

I got news for you chief. Nobody gives a fuck about your test pipe. Besides, you traded in the car, not your fucking problem anymore.

I have a CHL so a firearm is not a problem. It was more of an "oh shit" moment after the car was already traded in. Just trying to get some user experiences and what not.

Wuss, no. Concerned for the "oh shit" factor concerning to the law, yes.

You're probably right about the trade, just heard that they can come back after the trade and nail you ergo the freak out.

clowncar 05-07-2011 12:11 PM

If they come after you say these exact words...

"What the fuck is a test pipe?"

AppleJacks 05-07-2011 12:13 PM

I never thought of putting my gun there... I like that spot.

Why trade for a douche canoe?

JS + MS3 05-07-2011 12:21 PM

Don't worry about it man.

Congrats on the Nismo 370Z. How do you like it? It must be fast.

I think the 5th doesn't apply here, but good strategy :)

It's an easily accessible spot plus is hidden which it must be if you have a CHL.

I used to have a 350z but things happened and had to get rid of it, just missed the Nissan platform and got a good deal on this one.

I loved my MS3 but had hit a wall as far as a safe/powerful daily car. There were too many unknowns on the Gen2 so I got an itch.

Hey JS! Long time no speak..

Thanks, it's a pretty legit car and quick enough. I just wanted a car that was a bit more sport-car-ish than my MS3.

Oh and as fate would have it, my front bumper got scraped by a hit-and-run Range Rover. WTF.

Off topic.... So in Texas if you have a concealed permit you have to conceal it? I have a concealed in AZ and I can open carry if I want, but if I leave the vehicle parked it has to be hidden.

zx2man 05-07-2011 12:54 PM

Yeah dont worry about testpipe.

Looks like a Blackhawk serpa holster,or a Uncle Mikes copy, do you carry that on your person when you out of out of the car, and if so do you use that same rig? Because I see your in Texas-warm weather..and I cant get away with concealing my serpa unless Im wearing a light coat.

Crossbreed Holsters > Home

Best CCW holster I have ever worn...

zx2man 05-07-2011 01:15 PM

^^^^Thank you, I have quite a few rigs that are comfortable and work fine for my different carry pistols, I was just carious if the OP actrully uses that holster for outside the car. I rarely use my serpa, unless maybe out in the woods when im OPEN carry.

I saw that and yes, it concerned me. However I don't plan to track the car anytime soon. Although new rotors, pads, calipers, and fluid are already on the upgrade list. Even on the street this thing does not stop like it should.

AZ is a bit different than Texas. Texas you must conceal at all times unless you are going to use it or you are at a range. If you open carry and have a CHL it's potentially big jail time. Much more worry than a test pipe.

It's a serpa and I only keep it in the car. I usually carry in my laptop bag or use a "summer comfort" setup. I never really tuck my shirt in so this setup is ideal and quick to draw.

LOVE mine :), but for carry in a car its not ideal to have to unbuckle and draw. Something on the door would be nice like what he has/had.

Goodluck with the 370z! Love those cars :).
