Truly Insignificant Issue

88000 trouble free miles on my 2011 Speed3, so I'll ask about a tiny thing that has me troubled. Around the shift boot and front part of the console, I find tiny, white specks of material, as if something in the shifter is grinding itself up. When I clean it up, they're always back in a few days. Should I just get a life and forget about it?

Dandruff?

WetzMS3 05-31-2016 10:53 AM

It could be some of the plastic from the shifter assembly, but I have not idea how that would get out from under the shift boot.

This is most likely small specks of dirt or pollen. I always notice dust on my dash every few days and then the OCD in me whips out a towel and cleans it all up, only to repeat this procedure in a few days. Its never-ending, just get over it and be glad you haven't went ZZB or been stranded by your car. If this is the biggest concern you have with your car, consider yourself lucky.

I would first guess that it's coming from outside the shift assembly, since that area is "sealed" (generally speaking, unless you have a hole in the boot.) It could be skin or could be coming from somewhere else such as the sunglass compartment above?

This problem is getting more serious; I just noticed a similar condition around the shifter in my dyno queen '98 Corvette. Can anyone recommend a good dandruff shampoo?

g00s3y 05-31-2016 12:15 PM

Head & Shoulders, use it for a week, report back with findings.

nindoja 05-31-2016 12:17 PM

Well this thread took a direction I didn't anticipate.....

WetzMS3 05-31-2016 12:20 PM

I'm sure @predapio; has a good dandruff shampoo recommendation for you.
