Weird noise under boost So, I have had a few people check out my car and im actually taking it to the dealership this friday to have them look at it (still under warranty) However, maybe some of you guys know what could be the problem. Recently I drove back from PA to Florida and while in WV i went to like maybe 13-14PSI boost and I notice this tone change while above 10 PSI. Its hard to capture on video @Shampu; tried to capture a video but all you hear is intake noise. It sounds like I have a miniature external waste gate, however I don't. You can hear the turbo spool then right at 10PSI the tone coming out of the exhaust/downpipe is just totaly different. I wish i could be a lot more specific. My mods are in my description. Keypoints: I hit my boost target of 21 PSI no problem, No CEL, Nothing in my logs that would be indicative of a problem, Wastegate is opening and closing no overboost condition. I Took out my entire SRI, TIH and made sure all the seals where tight and checked to make sure clamps where tidy and still no result. Has anyone ever seen/heard of this before?? |
may be a dumb question, but did it start when u put the dp on? |
No, i have had the DP on for almost a year. Like I said I noticed it while I was making the return trip back from PA. |
I thought you had already taken it to mazda and had a tech diagnose it? Here is the video. I can hear the noise/filter out the intake sound from the hissing, but I doubt other people would be able too |
Thanks, ya you can't hear it at all. Taking it in tomorrow to actually find out the problem. |
I can't really hear what you are talking about and my instance may be different due to mods but when I go into boost I can definitely hear my wastegate opening through the exhaust. A few people riding in my car also commented on it. I have no cats or muffler though. |

I can hear my waste gate open(with my radio off)... and im stock.... |
Here are some stock intake clips with the CS downpipe. Any familiar sounds? Mhttps://vimeo.com/135018415 https://vimeo.com/135018463 Sent from my iPhone 6 |
You're taking the car in for no reason, really. However, you could check it for boost leaks. I had a small one a few years ago and even though the ECU logic worked around it and the AFRs were fine, I was hitting the load targets, and everything, I could still hear a light kind of a whistle noise when the boost was going above a certain amount and the air was escaping between the silicone hose and the TMIC pipe. |
It's not a normal sound at all. I didn't check for exhaust leaks around the downpipe though so that might be another good idea My friend had a CS downpipe on his old speed and it cracked twice. Also might not be a bad idea to inspect it a little bit. |
Sounds like an air leak to me. Check your boost tubes. I bet one of them is either not attached properly, or it has a hole. |
The techs early assessment is the exhaust side of turbo has a crack and the noise is coming from that. I'll know more later today hopefully |
If it were a boost leak would a datalog show changes from normal load values and more wgdc for the turbo to try and hold target boost? Could have posted a log |
Ya didn't think to post a log. Don't have my car right now so I can't lol. |

So apparently it's the gasket between turbo and dp. Said exhaust is just rushing past it. Glad it's not a huge problem |

So i finally got it all fixed, I am incredibly pissed off with the Dealership tho. I ordered my new exhaust and gasket we put it on and i get under the car and see that the test pipe is off its exhaust hangers, my Downpipe is off the exhaust hangers and the dealership didnt say anything to me. I went and checked the gasket coming out of downpipe and apparently they decided not to tighten the bolts because i could literately tighten them with my fingers....:wtf1: Fuck the dealership... |
