Oh buying my speed at 22 with a nearly perfect driving record still cost a ton to insure the car.

Switching insurance mid cycle is easy though, did it a couple months ago. Most insurance companies will even handle contacting your old insurance company to cancel your old policy for you if you want.

My first car I owned was a 1970 VW Kharman Ghia my father bought for me as a graduation present in 1988. As slow as that car was I still managed to get into more than a few bad situations. I can imagine what would have happened if I had an actual fast car. lol

I'm a firm believer that teens shouldn't have fast cars to learn on. I'm sure my son doesn't want to hear it, but his first car won't be anything sporty.

Haven't had anything happen yet. I absolutely love and cherish my car, and it's definitely babied. I'm pretty responsible with it if I say so myself. My father bought a new boss 302 and decided to keep the speed3 in the family and passed it onto me. Plus he got a mean deal with insurance on it.

Teens can be great drivers... and they do typically have better reaction times than old farts like me. However, what they lack is experience. How many times there have been "I totaled my speed" threads on here where the accident was caused by something that was entirely avoidable? The other issue is that teens typically feel invulnerable and don't seem to understand their own mortality. "It can't happen to me" is something usually only found in the very young. =p

Now, I'm not saying that older drivers can't be horrible. They can be just as bad, even worse... but by percentage, younger drivers are the most dangerous - hence the higher insurance and fatality rates.

Anyhow, it does sound like you are in family of auto enthusiasts and that is a bonus. Having a father who loves to drive and loves cars definitely carries over to his children.

Growing up me and my dad always hit all the auto shows, car events, and auto auctions around the houston area. We're both gear heads, and there's no going back for me. But I completely understand what you guys are saying. I have countless friends that've wrecked or totaled their cars because they don't pay attention to the road or are just straight up stupid. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel driving a manual (as the speed3 is) keeps the driver more focused on the road while driving by eliminating the urge to text or do other things while driving. My best friends have nice cars too (camaro ss and genesis 3.8 track) and we spend every moment of free time with them. All in all, I think having cars like this can affect people for the better by getting them into a lifestyle that they will want to continue with forever.
But if you're spoiled, that's another story.

You have something there, I'm 19 (posted a while ago) and bought my speed last august. But I think if you get into cars, or some other obsession, then it keeps you out of drugs and parties and kids at an early age. I had to work all the time to feed my addiction to the mods and the payment which also kept me on the straight and narrow path.

That sounds exactly like what my dad told me. I don't drink or smoke or do drugs. But when it comes to spending money, it's almost like being a drug addict, just without the horrible side effects. My dad's just glad that it's parts for my car and not marijuana or something.
