This car is a fucking tank in the snow with decent winter tires. The LSD works wonders. Drove to work during the snowstorm this past Tuesday and didn't miss a beat the entire way.

To be fair, Conti DWS are rated as some of the best all seasons in the snow and ice. So they're really like semi-winter tires that are great the rest of the year.
Before I stepped up to summer/winter, I only used Conti all seasons. Although driving up the hilly-ass streets around me does require the blizzaks when we get real snow. 12% grade + snow = trouble.

They still are not as good as winters. And the suck in the summer IMHO. Compared to the nt-05s I ran this summer the contis suck ass in the corners. Side wall is to soft

I think if you live Wisconsin-north, like..that north. Winters make sense. Anything south of chicago and its a bit over kill even considering safety first, etc.

1 day off work because you're snowed in is cheaper than 4 tires and 4 wheels. 5 days? still prob cheaper to miss work or take PTO.

Winter tires suck for everything except snow. That said, I put mine to good use in Chicago for most of the season.

Not everyone has a job where they can just call out because of the weather. I work in law enforcement and if I was to call out sick bc of snow, I would be in deep shit.

Incorrect. You can get performance winters, it's not only the tread pattern but the compound and how it behaves in cold weather.

It is probably our type of snow. My DWSs were 235/40/18 also and they pulled through over a foot of snow - Utah powder. If it was heavy shit or ice they probably wouldn't have fared as well. They work fabulously in the powder and packed snow we get out here. They also salt the shit out of our roads, thanks to the abundance of salt from the lake, and we're back to pavement in a day or two unlike further north where once the snow falls the ground is covered until spring. If I lived elsewhere I'd consider snows. They'd have to be speed rated though. Three years ago I had to make the trip from SLC to Reno and I had my non-rated (90 mph) snows on and it sucked driving through deserted Nevada. Every time I came to that stretch of road where I could see 10 miles out I got pissed. I just set the cruise to 85 and dealt with it.

Here is what the difference taken from discount tire's website:

Static Imbalance: this is what your bubble balacer will help you correct. This will remove 80% of balance issues.

Dynamic Imbalance: This wheel & tire would balance fine on a bubble balancer, but down the road you would get a small vibration and down the line, some irregular tire wear. Its more for taking care of that last little bit to make the tire balance down the road. As long as the tech knows exactly what he's doing and not just throwing lbs of weights on the rim flange.

Thanks for posting- but you have to remember that the balance job is only as good as the tech and machine that does the job. I.E. people's bad experiences with Firestone.

EDIT: Also, I'm sure buying quality tires makes a difference too in regards to multiple imbalances. I like the fact the past few sets of bridgestones that I've bought have had a heaviest point marker from the factory.

Back to the topic of winter tires

This past weekend I swapped out to Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4s in 225/40R-18.

I've only got about 100 miles on them so far, but these things handle very well on the car--all the grip lost with summers is back in force. Driving in the snow last tuesday proved to be no problem--even hills were no worry. The parking lot on Wednesday was a sheet of ice--but the car gripped well. I gather that this performance comes at some deep snow capability--but--

My need: I live in "rural" New Jersey, so while we get a big storm or two, we are mostly dealing with cold cleared roads and the possibility of freezing rain, some plow leftovers, etc. I also have a super steep driveway (everyone else parks at the end of the driveways).

My decision: performance winters (european) vs. pure snow (e.g. Nordics) because: 1) I drive "aggressively" and blizzaks handle like pencil erasers on dry pavement, 2) I would mostly be on dry road, albeit cold ones, 3) if the snow if super deep, I have the option of working from home or taking the Yukon out (and I have Blizzaks & chains for that from when we lived near Tahoe--no snow stops that thing at all).

An adide: about All Season vs Winter--there is no comparison in the super cold and snow. The Yukon's all season tires will get you around, but the Blizzaks stick to the snow and ice--my wife calls them "Tiger Claws". I couldn't even perform decent slides and donuts in the Squaw Valley parking lot last year--even in RWD the damn things just found grip. I do change them over, though, if the roads are going to be super dry for a long time and the temps are in the 30s. They wear too fast and don't handle too well in the dry/warm as All Seasons. I will leave the performance winters on my MS3 all winter though--they are biased towards cold & dry.

The PA4s were mounted on cheap rims--ASA AR1s--and ordered from Tire Rack. For some reason I went crazy and had the TPMS installed--with shipping it came to $1862.32. My wife likes the rims better than stock, but I have heard they flake with the salt after a while. They were cheap enough for me not to really care about that--but I have to see for myself how they stand up.

From my experience with blizzaks, when the temps are still fluctuating between freezing and not freezing they become very slick in the wet. Cornering sucks because of the giant sidewall, I suppose if someone isn't running them on 16's it might be less apparent. But during a snow storm we had, I was easily passing traffic and going the speed limit confidently.

Cornering will suck because of side wall.

Of course they won't be great in the wet, they were designed for cold, ice and snow.

I think the purpose of this thread is to state the buying a tire for a specific purpose is much better than trying to get 1 tire to handle everything.

This extends to ice (studded), racing slicks, extreme summer tires, and touring tires.

I know to pick on the OP - I hate when people say "My (insert make and model) handles like shit in snow!" . . . my retort, "What tires do you have?"

When they don't know the type of tire or brand, or ask "why does that matter" I go into full rant mode. Sucks that the cars get a bad reputation when its really just the wrong tires.

Was the gen1 sold with summer tires only?

This seems incredibly obvious...

Walk on ice vs. wearing ice skates. One CAN handle ice and dirt, but the other was clearly meant for ice.

But towel is still not snow.

Once snow gets wet it no longer considered snow - its slush (which still is not a towel).

And I don't know how the DWSs perform on towels.

Depends. Is said towel above or below freezing? Ice (and snow since it's a form of ice) is a solid therefore dry. It only becomes wet when it goes above freezing and changes states to liquid form.
