Default Yes, the stock exhaust.

Maybe I'm just not use to it, or maybe it's because this is my first vehicle with decent power.

Am I the only one that thinks the stock exhaust sounds fairly good? From the inside, I can hear it over the radio with the windows up, and it sounds better with the windows down.

I wouldn't mind getting an aftermarket exhaust, but having it too loud and obnoxious isn't something I want to deal with.

Flame on.
Upgrading the Catback exhaust is the biggest waste of money performance wise. I don't think sound should cost over $600. If anything, I would probably go with slightly longer tips to keep the exhaust soot off your bumper.

If you really want to RICE out the car on the cheap, just remove the resonators.

In the end it won't matter though cause everyone upgrades their Catback unless their car came with one already.

I like the sound from that!

I suppose I'll stay stock for a while, until I'm ready for a louder sound.

I don't want to sound ricey at all. Definitely don't want to attract attention from the wrong kind of people. You know, the one's with swirly lights on the top of their cars. If they can't hear me coming, I have a better chance of getting away!

Thanks everyone.

I've had numerous cars with decent OEM power. And I love the sound of the stock exhaust. Enough of a rumble without being 'ricey' or annoying. No need for any exhaust upgrades for me.

Catted DP with stock cat back....still sleeper status....not to loud...just pure sex between intake, V1, and exhaust.

Sent from my TFA Turbo Wagon!

If you really want to hear the exhaust inside the car, get motor mounts.

Running a catted DP + stock CBE -> sound inside the cabin isn't so bad, but it's a lot louder outside the car. It doesn't sound super ricey, but it's not super nice like the quality exhausts (UR, Cobb, etc.) are. I'd like to get a resonator welded in to calm it down a bit, but don't want to spend the $$$.

Coming from a stock exhaust, if you have only an aftermarket test pipe, the sound is a little different. It's pretty subtle though. Catted DP is more noticeable. I imagine catless is even a little bit louder.

FWIW, my favorite exhaust note(s) are from the s2000:

and the e46 m3. I found a few decent videos of the m3's exhaust sound, but not a damn one where the driver would shut up about his damn m3. Fucking M3 owners.

There is an exhaust thread stickied on the forums and it is fairly comprehensive.

As another member already said, it is awfully expensive to upgrade your sound since the exhausts really dont seem to do all that much at stock to medium power levels.

Im still fiending for a corksport CBE but it sure is pricey for what amounts to...not all that much.

Like an infiniti or a mustang, the MS3 sure does have its own unique sound that is quite pleasant.

Do stock exhaust speed3's sound better than speed6's? Cause when I was stock I couldn't hear a thing even with all four windows down.

I miss the sound of my stock cbe with no cats and resonator. It was loud....and gurgled but it was the tips that drove me nuts. Now I have 2 bazooka cannons back there, and its fucking loud.

If i had to gripe about one thing it would be that the tips are "fake".

They're shrouds welded over a fairly skinny ass exhaust pipe...bleh. They dont look terrible but they certainly could look a hell of alot better. Then again, i cant imagine they're limiting performance so if they sound good...who cares.

I actually thought the stock CBE sounded a little bit too raspy for my taste, but it still wasn't bad.

Inside the car it was audible but it sounded like it was either too thin or that the resonators suck bawls. From outside the car it had a decent tone to it and a few of the locals here are rocking stock CBE with catted downpipes and they sound much better than OEM... But I had to appease my inner ricer and go full Ultimate Racing TP/CBE for my own sound tastes. Much louder, much deeper tone, and Subaru-like sound in the lower normal driving RPMs. Makes me smile ear to ear every time I drive the car.

That and the occasional fireball always livens things up as well.

The stock exhaust on the Gen 2 MS3's are quieter than the Gen 1's. I personally think the Gen 1's stock single exhaust sounds much throatier. Gen 2's stock are a little too quiet and muffled for me. The best way and lowest cost to remedy it is with an axle back. Borla makes a nice one one although it's pricey at $600. The muffler is too big and heavy in the back- the rest of the system is fine. When I had my 2010 Miata, it had a similar huge muffler in the back with dual outlets and no sound at all- worse than the MS3. I bought and installed in 20 minutes a Flyin Miata axle back with really nice 4 inch angled dual outlets that was half the size and weight of the stock muffler- the car immediately gained great sound and a surprising- I would estimate- 16 HP. I would expect similar results on the MS3- maybe even more with an intake.

Op, I agree completely and if you just want a slightly better/louder tweak (and a small bump in power with quicker spool) and you don't want to spend a lot and desire an easy install.....get a testpipe. They go for $100 used, install in 20 mins and just turn up the volume on the sweet sounding stock exhuast. You get very minor gurgle and pops and it sounds like pure sex with the windows up. Not obnoxious, just right. Not happy, easily remove and sell for what you paid. My 02.

I actully like the way that catless stock exhaust sounds with the res delete. I just ended up getting some 4.5" tips and an E cut out for whenever I feel like being loud. Yet to be installed though.

Upgrading your Catback has shown little to no power gain until you break the 400+ whp mark.

I love the sound of the stock exhaust too, especially at low revs/idle. In the upper part of the rpm band it kinda goes quiet when I wouldn't mind a bit more scream. Removing the 2nd cat just made the stock exhaust a little louder; didn't change the WAY it sounds at all.

I'm pretty sure this information is located on the manufacturer's and vendor's websites, so instead of posting this question, you could have just looked there.

Or, you could have looked at the dozens and dozens of threads of people have made about installing 3" DPs with their stock CBEs.

Or, you could have read posts in this thread detailing how people are running a "catted DP" with their stock CBEs.

I do realize you said 3" catted DPs - But that's every stock-flanged DP (catted and non-catted) as far as I know. You could find that information on the manufacturer's website as well.

Thanks for your input.

I'm gonna go ahead and say if you asked that question - "do I need a new dp if I get a 3" cbe?" - then you didn't do any research. It isn't an obscure question. It isn't prone to "slip through the cracks."

Either you don't know how to search, or you don't want to spend 20 minutes reading some DP install/review threads. Not trying to be a dick, but the nature of your question does not leave any other alternatives. If you had contacted a manufacturer, you would have known the answer to your question. If you had searched, you would have known the answer to your question. Your question is itself a confession of ignorance to the ways of this forum.

My rule of thumb is that if the car is louder than it is fast then fail.

I'm not a big fan of just uncatted, uncorked from the turbo back type straight out type exhaust plumbing on ANY car; they always seem to get raspy/tinny at the upper RPMS and unless you are pushing 350cubic inches or more the sound is just kinda ricey/importy/raspy.
Kyle Undefined I like the way that Greddy CBE sounds. I'm assuming you are stock on the exhaust side up until that CBE correct? When you rev it it doesn't get raspy or too loud; sounds just about right to my ears If I was you I'd raise my idle speed up 100-150rpms or so because it seems the exhaust goes very quiet at warm idle; so much so I can hear your injectors clicking lol.

Mods (in order of significance): Cobb AccessPort, Autotech CDFP upgrade (thanks Captain KR for your assisstance), Cobb SF SRI Intake, Ultimate Racing cat and resonator-less test pipe, Cobb Turbo Inlet Hose, Cobb Knob, Cobb 300g shifter weight

Tune: My own (based on the v210 and v231 Cobb OTS maps but ramped way up)

Street creds:
- Fastest known K04/93 MS3/driver with only an AP, CDFP upgrade, intake, and tune | 13.37@106.83mph on stock Dunlops (2.04 sec 60' time, full curb weight, 75*F ambient temp)
- Has gone an indicated 146mph on three occasions now.

Yes I will help you tune your K04/pump gas car; I have much less experience than the major players but I also charge you $0 and can turn you around quickly. 4 satisfied customers and counting...

Yeah, it's all stock besides the CBE I love the way it sounds, it has just the right note when driving. Doesn't have much of a drone while on the highway, and when stomping on it the sound stays nice.

Should probably comment on the video, it's not my car :p I don't hear that on mine though.

No worries, it's not for everyone but I love loud cars. Like my GTO...

You're completely right. Im sorry ive ever doubted you. All your assumptions are 100 percent accurate.

You will sushi roll and ffs up and down the GSP with us. You will end up on YouTube and in the street racing videos. And last, but not least, you will allow us access to employee pricing on all parts thru your dealership.

Are you sure you still want to come to NJ? We go hard here.....be warned.

I too once was a naive ayshun with a stock pu. Then I met these fuckers. My wife hates me now Tuesday nights. My neighbors hate my car for the uber cool cold start. My garage is a fucking mess. My warranty went out the window. My life has not been the same since April. I should have bought a Mazda2.
