UPDATE

Pulled the spill valve for examination (Thanks @86azms3 for making the SST for me), I found a very, very light film of the sticky on the spring. It isn't impacting anything as of yet, so I put it back together without cleaning and did a couple WOT pulls on the new flash (which still needs some work).

As a result of tonight's findings, all tools have been removed from the vehicle (as I won't be needing them immediately).

86AmishMs3 01-02-2012 07:06 PM

oh yeah, it's an official sst now? You drew the lines, i just cut like a monkey. Glad it works. Hopefully you're still liking the loudness. My mscbe was even worse with the loud. And then with a bt twas really loud.

Enki 01-02-2012 07:42 PM

So what you're saying is drawing lines with a sharpie is the hard part? Lol
The tool is awesome and makes it quite a bit easier/faster.

I'm fine with the loudness tbh, just have to watch myself in town (lots of cops everywhere).

meh cops don't seem to mind too much here, just speeding. I've pshhh'd a coupld cops with my vta.

Several tanks/track days without issue on 50/50 mix so far, just pulled the spill valve to check the spring and although slightly sticky, nothing detrimental. Currently wondering if I should post a new thread on the spring mod or not; at any rate, here's some pictures:

Latest update:

Car been running fine until I got it to the track a few weeks ago, and had part throttle issues (car would blow the tires off with just a little more throttle input), so went home and retuned; basically gutted the torque out of it, which left it pulling harder as RPM increased (which is totally odd for a stock turbo MS3).

I decided to not give a fuck about not having torques down low until yesterday, when Phate pointed out the obvious as to why I was not hitting boost targets (thanks again, man), and went back to 19 psi of pure torque glory.

Then, on my way home from running errands last night, I say to myself: "Hey asshole, car doesn't seem to be running quite right; maybe it's time for some spark plugs." Sure enough, a few miles later, pop a CEL for cyl 4 misfire. Only happens under low load situations, and only under a certain RPM; WOT is smooth as butter.

Either plugs (which I hope it is) or a fuel injector (which is possible). Will know for sure later today when I pull them and do a compression/leakdown test as well (might as well, right?)

On the black goo issue, I have been doing some research on it and it is thought that it is an electrolysis issue where metal parts are sending current through the e85 instead of being grounded to the frame/wiring. It seems to happen when a boost a pump is added and the ground isnt upgraded. You might try grounding the fuel system parts that are building the goo straight to the battery to see if it helps.

I did that on mine for a while. Direct ground from pump body to the ground side of the battery. It did nothing to relieve the issue.

06Speed6 02-13-2012 02:09 PM

Well shit

Enki 02-13-2012 02:09 PM

Yeah, the pumps are bolted directly to the head with multiple points of contact; while the internals are free floating and likely not grounded, there's no real way to get them to ground, nor should they need to be, IMO.

Edit:
I take that back, the internals should ground just fine via the return spring, so long as the coating used on the internals is not highly resistant (electricity wise).

rfinkle2 02-13-2012 02:11 PM

That spill valve socket is genius.

Enki 02-13-2012 02:18 PM

Works on Audis and probably VWs too.

Dano 02-13-2012 02:18 PM

and to think I went and bought a 32mm open/box end wrench...I am so old skool.

Enki 02-13-2012 02:21 PM

I have one as well, but when rebuilding pump every day, fuck that. Fuck it in the face. Now it's just something I keep in case something/someone needs some "physical manipulation."

Dano 02-14-2012 09:15 AM

I hear ya. That SST is a prereq to running over 50% e85. Lol.

i would say the coating are fairly electrically resistant since they are forms of ceramics, DLC, and TiN. But may fall along the lines of semiconductors like other carbo nitrides.

But either way the tip is not usually coated which is contacted by the retainer and spring, ya??

Enki 02-15-2012 02:30 PM

Don't recall, actually. Good point though.

Shitty cellphone photos of the button valve assembly; everything had a sort of tan film on it, which largely wiped off easily. I did not clean everything before reassembly though, and the bottom of the button valve seat was sticky. Not had any issues, so not gonna give a shit.

Spring looked good, and was about the same length as I remember.

Edit:
Btw, the SST is the fucking bomb.

mrmonk7663 02-15-2012 05:35 PM

Is the SST the socket yall hacked up or is it a tool yall ordered? What does it stand for?

Enki 02-15-2012 05:40 PM

Super special tool. Look through prior posts for photos of the modified 32mm socket.

its a 200 tool you can get from Mazda but Enki will sell you one for much less :)

If you look through the SM you'll find..oh ...id say about 100 references to various SSTs to perform various tasks....fucking engineers!

Enki 02-15-2012 06:11 PM

Why sell it when you can make your own for $20? I'm not about to make money off some super easy diy at the community's expense. If you're local, I'll help you rebuild your pump. If you aren't and want one yourself, I'll send photos of exactly how it's cut.

Enki 02-15-2012 06:39 PM

UPDATE:

Getting orings and will be testing pure e with both spring and ring mod; if this fixes the issues, oh boy.

turn your sarcasm filter off :)

good work man...in for results of o-ring + spring. I has o-ring from silvapain.

mrmonk7663 02-15-2012 08:08 PM

@silvapain forgot to send my oring :(

Dano 02-15-2012 08:21 PM

well I did lend him my spill valve for like 6 months :)

mrmonk7663 02-15-2012 08:25 PM

LOL, how sweet of you :) Now, I guess we wait to see if Enki's testing proves anything worthwhile for us.

Enki 02-15-2012 08:57 PM

I'm trying to get Silva to send them priority/2 day if possible (at my cost); want to get it dialed in and tested over the course of a week if possible, as there's racing to be had on Saturday the 25th (which I expect to fail horribly at).

Back on the sauce and rocking the drunken unicorn tune. In other news, Viagra now $3.25 a gallon. Maybe I'll drive down to the post office and get my mail from the mailman before he leaves.

< 30 miles and pump shit the bed. Running the new x shaped oring in the standard location, and the round one in between the piston sleeve and the retaining nut (which should squeeze tightly around the piston shaft).

Pressure comes and goes, but just isn't there when needed. 0-80 in a little over 2 minutes.

Gonna try putting either the round or stock x o-ring in the space that's left in the stock o-ring location and see if that does anything. If not, back to 50/50.

Don't read this post or look at the pictures if you are at all squeamish.

Pulled the pump earlier today and it was full of black death and o-ring carnage (see pictures). I noticed a small scratch on part of the retaining nut, which turned out to be what I think is an oil scraper much like what I was thinking the pump needed. Fearing that to be part of the problem of oil getting by, I cut it out and removed it and the o-ring under it and installed my stock x shaped oring in its place.

When attempting to start the car, it simply would not build pressure (I did not clean the spill valve, assuming it was fine). While the button valve was fine, the spill valve itself was absolutely covered with the sticky film (which was quite thick compared to normal). A little bit of lighter fluid cleaned it all out and the car built pressure just fine on startup.

Within a few minutes of starting, however (I was putting tools away while the car ran to make sure), I noticed that the low registry on the AP showed in the mid 300s for pressure (my minimum target anywhere is 750). Fearing the worst, I went for a drive anyways and sure enough, I made it half a block before the pump shit the bed again. I had shit to do, so I kept going and found out about 10 miles in that bringing the RPM up would restore pressure; unfortunately, it didn't hold pressure well and would dip into the low thousands at WOT, and immediately go back to itfp pressure at the lower RPMs.

I then stopped at the gas station, put 5 gallons of 91 in it, and pressure didn't go back up until after I brought the RPMs up again, but this time it actually stayed up for the most part. Pressure still dips at WOT, but it needs more 91 in the tank anyways and I'll probably pull the pump AGAIN either tomorrow or Wednesday to make sure even going to Phoenix is feasible this weekend.

As a side note, the pictures are fucking huge for detail.
