I will be heading to Addison, IL early August. I know it's not entirely close for silva but if he's willing to meet somewhere close to 55 (i think he's off 57? Little further east then where I'll be) I'll meet up with him on my return trip home. Would be going up early July but am going to Kenya this summer for 4 weeks so car is on hold for a little while. Going to Boostin Performance to get retuned after I install some parts when I get back in the country. Rob u live wayyy to far away lol

I took a look before I left yesterday and agree this looks absolutely awesome. Pictures don't do it justice. I love how the front/rear/side lips are done too. It really helps break it up a bit and looks great.

rfinkle2, is your tail tint vinyl or painted?

Thanks for posting pics Kritz. I appreciate it. I need to learn how to work my camera properly.

As always, it was great to see you.
If you use a heat gun, the vinyl will just about liquefy, making for easy installation. Although if you don't use 3m primer 94 (you can get it from any sign supply store) it doesn't stand a chance in hell of staying down.

The primer 94 is an adhesive promoter that you should use in all the concave areas of the bumper as well as anywhere you had to stretch a bit.

The wrap looks great on there, I love the satin look. I'm curious to know if you get better gas mileage after you wrapped it. I noticed a 3 or 4 MPG jump up once I did mine...

The going rate in the DFW area is around 1300 - 1500.
If you do it, make sure the shop you choose is using name brand vinyl, preferably Avery SuperCast wrap vinyl, as Avery backs their vinyls for 10 years.

Primer 94 is excellent for 3m brand vinyl, but incompatible with Oracal per one of their bulletins.

The Oracal vinyl that I used is a solvent based adhesive, and when used with primer 94, it separates.

I have an e-mail that I sent Oracal concerning an adhesion promoter compatible with their vinyl, but I'm waiting for a reply.

I used a heat gun in almost all areas, but wanted the vinyl to look as much like paint as possible, so avoided stretching the vinyl where I could.

I chose to use oracal because their matte black is deep with a satin look vs. 3m's which is much more matte.

Lex, the project took me a little over 3 weeks, working on it nights and weekends (hence a lack of Guardian Angel info that I really need to get to installing).

If someone has some experience under their belt, I would expect it to take much less time, but I was a noob in every respect when I started.

m249saw and Lex, As far as washing it, the manufacturer recommends washing it with a car wash that doesn't contain any wax (no wash and wax, just wash) in order not to create a blotchy finish.

4 companies that I know of make a matte specific protectant, Swisswax (which makes very high end waxes for traditional auto paint), Dr. Beasley's, crystaltek and Chemical guys (quick detailer only).

So far, I've tried the Swisswax and Dr. Beasley's and found both to be blotchy, although they were specifically advertised not to be. HAHA! I have a pretty extensive collection of detailing supplies, and so far, Permanon has proved to be the best @ creating a uniform finish, and in between applications, I've been spot cleaning with Stoner's window cleaner with rain repel.

As far as price, I've heard a wild range of pricing for a wrap, from around $1000 being the cheapest, up to as much as $6000 being the priciest.

From what I can gather, the amount of the car that is disassembled contributes to the overall price due to the man hours involved of removing the front and rear clip, door handles etc.

As far as brands, it seems that all of the major wrap companies use either 3m, Avery, Oracal, or Hexis, all of which get good reviews by people who have had them installed.

Supposedly, most of the "cast" vinyls made specifically for wraps can last in rough conditions for @ least three years, up to 10 (which is previously mentioned) for Avery Supercast.

rfinkle2, is your tail tint vinyl or painted?
I started out painting them, against the advice of Lex and Silvapain (which they can feel free to say I told you so. LOL).

I can paint well (relatively), and was able to lay the VHT red made for polycarbonate nicely.

The problem ( @least for me) came when I tried to clear over the VHT. I used Duplicolor brand clear, which to the best of my knowledge makes VHT paint, but the clear ate right into the red base.

I tried 2 x's. After taking the lights down and wet sanding / polishing them out 2x's, I gave up and am working on getting the vinyl up to snuff. They look OK, but I know I can get them to look as good as factory if I do them once more. They are extremely tricky due to the design, number of recesses etc.

I'm using Oracal 8300 transparent right now, and I have an entire roll to work with. The next time I do them, I'm pretty sure I'm going to nail it.

Just love the look, I think it's the best looking Gen2 I've ever seen.
If you have it done professionally, all of the shops I've seen offer a warranty. If you decide to do it yourself, worst case scenario is the rockers / ground effects get beat up, and you can do them again come spring.

I have been on the highway a few times since doing the front clip, and am positive that it is holding up as well as the easily chipped Mazda factory paint.

Damn it I wish I had time to go to Gerry's. Nothing looks better than a black car, especially a matte black car. rfinkle2 your car looks amazing!!!!
To answer Scoobs question about the vinyl holding up in winter, this past winter, although not a very wintery winter, my wrap held up awesome, no peeling what so ever AND when I took the vinyl off, my car looked brand new. If anything it's a good paint protector lol

I've always liked flat black and the wheels look great. I know so many people have the nurburgrings but I like them. I wonder if bronze would look good on my silver gen 1.

Hows the wrap cost compared to cost of plastidiping your car?

There are quite a few matte colors available if you were interested. I don't know how much plastidipping the entire car would cost, but plasti-dips' texture is much different, and I prefer the look of vinyl.

Thanks for the kind words btw.

Rob, when (if) my car is back up running again, how much you want for me to come out to you with all the materials and wrap my car?

If you're lucky I might let you touch my beard too.

LOL. If I can touch your beard, I'd do it for free.

Honestly man, if you were to take a trip over here and bring the materials, I would be down to wrap your car for $0.00.

A 2 liter bottle of Pepsi Max would definitely make the job go faster.
